On the 2000 Census questionnaire, "race" and "Hispanic ethnicity" are listed as separate questions. A person of Hispanic ethnicity is anyone who identifies with that social group, and so can be of any race. This can make data on race and ethnicity difficult to interpret.
The 2000 Census also marked the first time that respondents were allowed to select more than one racial category. On earlier Censuses, multiracial individuals were asked to choose a single racial category, or respond as "Some Other Race." For more information on the multiracial population in 2000, please see the multiracial profile.

I personally don't see a problem with this, and if we allow polls based upon age then I don't see why we can't allow this.

If you don't agree with the poll the I would suggest you ignore the thread and move on. Any racially insensitive comments will result in a vacation from posting.

You have been warned, lets keep it clean please

Just an interesting but off-topic tidbit: Race doesn't actually exist ;)

AAA Statement on "Race" (AAA = American Anthropological Association, not the automobile association :p)

They often find people of different "races" to be more genetically similar than people of the same "race." Ethnicity exists, but those ties can be even more dubious since membership in an ethnic group isn't determined by strict rules or requirements...

Sorry if this is a non-pc question, but why are all the options hispanic oriented? well except for the last one (which I really thought was funny).

People were upset about the options on the first poll a forum member did and it was closed.

I took this straight from the 2000 U.S. Census and then added middle easternerns and "I hate this poll" I even made it multiple optioned just in case you felt left out by being 2 or more, or you hate the poll but still wanted to vote your ethnic background.

Leaving aside the argument that race is a social construct, I will say this: although I typically identify as a Hispanic person, I'd like to point out that Hispanics, as a group, come in many "races" i.e. some that are Black, others that are White, and some that are "Indian" (NOT Native American- the indigenous people that were native to a country/island BEFORE the Spaniards conquered.) Also, "Hispanic" is less a social group and more a cultural one. So lumping us all into one "Hispanic" group seems to defeat the purpose of the poll, imho.

Don't even get me started on the Census. I still can't get over the fact that they used the term "Negro." I had no idea that we were still in the 1950's.

I call shenanigans. What if you are from Spain or Mexico, but you are still white?

Besides, what is with all of the "non-Hispanic" answers? It makes it sound like the world is 70% Hispanic, and the rest is just non-Hispanic. lol.

Kind of reminds me of a guy I know... He grew up in South Africa (he is white). Moved here about 5 years ago for school, and he was suspended after he checked the "African American" box on some form he had to fill out for his college.

but the poll allows you to choose more than one category for that very reason

Very true, but I don't see a Hispanic-White, or Hispanic-Black, etc option. there are NON-Hispanic options, but not for racial subcategories that fall under the Hispanic umbrella.

I might add that I'm not sensitive to this subject because of my "race", such as it is, but because I worked at a governmental civil rights agency as an investigator for five years.

This isn't scientific. There is no purpose to the poll other than to entertain the curiosity some people have. Lumping all the Whites, and Black into one group would also defeat the purpose of the poll. Culturally, I think the worst is "Asians" as that encompasses areas from Japan to India which are completely different culturally.

The portion of my post you quoted stated that this question about race would be separate from the question asking which "cultural one" you associate yourself with. If you would like I will start a "Hispanic Ethnicity" poll (and give another reason for people that hate these polls yet click on them anyway to comment how much they hate them.) There was no scientific study behind the poll. Honestly I could careless who has a Droid, as long as they're not using an iPhone. People do take interest in this though. If I was allowed 20 options instead of 10 I could have un-lumped the Hispanics. I think this way is kinda ridiculous to be honest, but many people got very upset and the original poll. Which I also think is ridiculous, which is why I added that "overly sensitive" jab.

I call shenanigans. What if you are from Spain or Mexico, but you are still white?
If you consider yourself Hispanic then you would check the box next to Hispanic. If you do not, then you would check the box next to Non-Hispanic White. If you are half black and half white then you could either select "Two or More Races" or check both "Non-Hispanic Black" and "Non-Hispanic White" or you could even check Hispanic if you believe that is the best suit for you.

Besides, what is with all of the "non-Hispanic" answers? It makes it sound like the world is 70% Hispanic, and the rest is just non-Hispanic. lol.
It most likely stemmed from the option not being in there, and some people getting offended by it. So the government chose to do it that way the next time so as to not offend them again and in doing so offending some other people by putting "Non-Hispanic" in front of everything else. Which leads to aileendq's about the Census in generally. I really don't see why this is even needed in the Census, but our government is so concerned about links between race and wealth. I see race as an adjective. No different than describing a tomato as red, or an orange as orange. Just like the fruit, the description has no effect on how I feel about the person.

Other than the lack of personal responsibility, political correctness and race issues are the two main problems I see with the direction of the country. Look at the death of Michael Jackson. A man who was colorblind to peoples' skin, one who's whole life was dedicated to bridging the racial divide. In his legal problem days some blacks were quick throw him under the bus and in death some whites complained about news coverage of his death not mentioning these dark years of his life. Both sides have succeeded in one common goal. The man that never saw color is back to being black.

Kind of reminds me of a guy I know... He grew up in South Africa (he is white). Moved here about 5 years ago for school, and he was suspended after he checked the "African American" box on some form he had to fill out for his college.
Illustrating my point that all this politically correct crap is just ...crap. I think the "n-word" was definitely bad (unless you are that race, then it's apparently okay for you to use it.), so people started using "black" but then that offended people to, so they changed to "African American" which come to find out offended people too... But it also wrongfully described the term and caused morons to do what happened to the child in your example. The same morons that suspend a kid for bringing a Lego gun to school because of the Zero Tolerance Policy.

______________________________________________

The push for political correctness has just gone to far. In trying to be 100% politically correct all we accomplish is offending someone else. Personally, I think maybe people should just stop getting offended so easily. We have turned into a country that just because someone has a difference in opinion from you, you feel personally attacked.

This poll is not here to offend people, it's not here to attack people. It's not even here to come to any sort of conclusion (other than the fact that white people always hog all the good stuff.)

And if you disagree with me, you're probably racist.
...and worst than Hitler. :p
