RoW vs. AT&T Galaxy Nexus

Hi all,

I've searched high and low but can't find a conclusive answer to this. I'm wondering what the difference is between the G Nexus that can be ordered from Expansys and a G Nexus that will perhaps one day be released on/for AT&T.

Are the radios and frequencies in the RoW from Expansys the same for all 1G, 2G and 3G data as well as voice? 4G compatible? These are the things that I'm primarily concerned with but perhaps there would be other hardware differences. I'm not up to speed on all this and maybe it's as simple as the one GSM G Nexus will work equally well on all GSM carriers around the world.

They're the same. I'm using my expansys-sourced Gnex on AT&T right now.

I thought the one being released on AT&T didn't have the bands for tmobile 3g and 4g? Might be wrong but I thought that passed through the FCC without the bands.

I might be mistaken though.

a GNex hasn't passed through the FCC that i'm aware of.
this device will likely never be sold in an AT$T store. that's why it would be exactly the same. Google made a pentaband phone for a reason, to cover all GSM carriers. a true world phone.

in the end there will prob be 3 different ones:
i9250
i515
i something for Sprint.

none of this is factual, just my thoughts and best guess on the matter.

Some devices with AT&T bands aren't actually destined for AT&T. They're either unlocked international devices or those destined for Canadian carriers that run the 850/1900 bands (e.g., Rogers). The FCC still clears them, though, in spite of the fact they may never see the light of day on a U.S. carrier.

A Porsche-branded Blackberry alleged to retail for roughly $2,000 recently passed the FCC with AT&T bands in tow, but AT&T will never sell or officially support it.

I have to agree that I doubt you'll ever see the GN in an AT&T store, but if they did I'm sure it would be the same pentaband phone that's already available. Seems foolish to remake a phone to REMOVE radios.

Sure, it's unlikely Google and Samsung will design a new phone without the pentaband radios. My main point was that it's also certainly far from guaranteed we'll see one appear in AT&T retail channels. We've yet to see a Nexus device offered directly - either with subsidy or no - by AT&T.

I have an imported non-carrier branded version and IMHO that seems to be the way to go if you'd wish to remain with a GSM carrier and obviously don't mind paying full retail. I'm concerned the officially carrier-supported GNs may have issues in the future with the carriers attempting to restrict access to the built-in wireless tethering and other functionality/apps they may not be too keen on.

I wouldn't worry about it to much. I don't think they can actually block a phone. (Probably FCC regs) I think all they could do with the tethering is disable your data or maybe choke it to 2G speeds if they find unauthorized tethering. I know with my iPhone they were threatening to add the hotspot to your plan if you were caught tethering. so that may be the worst thing they could/would do.

While AT&T has never had a Nexus S in their stores we have been able to get one subsidized for them from Best buy. That says something. Also their google + page was asking if people were interested.

That seems unnecessary if they won't ever sell one.

Also Verizon has never sold a Nexus, but they are getting one, I think one of the main reasons AT&T never has was because of the iphone exclusivity, now that is gone they seem way more open to android to me.

If would be a smart play on AT&T's part if they did carry the GN. Better selection equals happier and more customers.

wow! had to give you thanks for this, mate! not sure how i missed this one. this is amazing news. why? because i'll end up either selling my current GNex or i'll sell the one i pick up from them and go under contract... in turn making profit... ~$350. nice
