Root Rooting Motorola Triumph: n00b requests help

I have a Motorola Triumph that I would like to root. I have read the sticky threads related to rooting, but I don't understand what to do. I'm confused by the different methods, I don't understand how they differ from one another, so I can't determine which would best suit my needs. Questions:

1. How should I root my phone?
2. What do these terms mean?

• busybox
• recovery
• port over
• CWM
• cyanogen mod

Q: "Why do you want to root your phone if you don't even know what you're doing?"

A: I want to be able to use programs that require rooting. I have used Ubuntu for about four years, and have gained some rudimentary knowledge of programming; I think I'm capable of following the instructions, and determining whether or not things are going properly.

My Optimus V got stolen last week, and that's why I am the owner of a new Triumph (my carrier is Virgin Mobile). I was interested to download WheresMyDroid or another program designed to help me find it if it is stolen.

I'm also having problems with battery life (not having installed any new programs since I bought my Triumph this week) so I'm interested to use JuiceDefender or similar.

If there any better programs than WheresMyDroid and JuiceDefender, please let me know.

Obviously, I am a complete n00b at this but I'd really like to get educated and get to work on this. Thanks for any help.

The easiest and most-foolproof way to root the phone is to download the "gingerbreak.apk" (to your SD card) and install it. You will have to enable "install non-market apps" to do this.

Then follow it's instructions (specifically, you need a SD card in the phone and USB Debugging must be enabled) and it will root the phone for you in one click. Takes a couple of minutes.

There are other ways to do this, but they're not as safe or foolproof.

- What features will I not be getting with this method?
- Is it reversible?

One more important question: should I be resetting the phone entirely before I root it? (I only got it this week, I don't mind.) Does it need to be in a fresh, out-of-the-box state before starting? Should I disable sync? Is there anything else I should do to it before I start?

Rooting is not as dangerous as people try to make it out to be. It's just having superuser or root permissions on the phone that allow you to access and change more of it. Linux distributions have root permissions, but stock Android disables it.

There was even a thread i read in here that doesnt need gingerbreak or any other app to root. I think they used terminal emulator.

can i hop onto this ? since, I had similar questions and issues.
So after root with gbbreak and getting busybox? what now?
does any of the mods to get gingerbread work with VM service.
I read some stuff doesn't allow you to make calls or mms.
Backup and then add on what to get GB?

I have a couple posts that are stickied here that might help you out some:

Either of the GB ROMs listed in those posts work fine on this phone. None of them break your VM service. Early on when they were being developed, there were some issues (as is expected). The only real remaining issue would be HDMI support, you have to have a stock ROM for that.

The first post I linked has a lot of links to important threads and explanations of some of the terminology. The second one is a step by step guide to getting one of the custom ROMs on your phone. You can root your phone without installing a custom ROM if you want. I did that at first to remove unwanted apps (the VM bloatware) and to make some cool modifications to my phone. Also because of the way this phone works, you don't actually have to root it to be able to put on a custom ROM. If you did that, those ROMs come with root access.

MIUI has busybox already. Pretty sure CM7 does too.

I'm in the same boat...I just tried to root my MT with the GB apk from your link and it says it is infected by a virus. Is this just normal action of my anti virus and it is safe, or should I try a different GB file?

I replied in the other thread too, but yeah, if you got the download form my guide, it isn't bad to download it. I think my anti-virus said the same thing when I did it a while back.
If you don't feel comfortable with it still, you can try the other method in that post.

I can attest that Gingerbreak, ala Agentc13 instructions and sources works.
Like someone said. Load it, run it and you're rooted.
