[Verizon] My Galaxy Nexus is COMPLETELY DEAD. Does not boot into ANY mode.

Hello guys,

I have recently bought my first android phone, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

On the second day I decided to root it since I needed market enabler, as my local market (UAE) has literally no apps.

I rooted using the SDK tools, fastboot and superboot. Everything worked fine for 1 day.

However, the next day, the phone just died on me, and would not boot at all. It kept getting stuck on the "Google" image at startup. At that point, I could still go into the bootloader. I tried locking/unlocking the bootloader again, since that basically wipes all the date on the phone, but it still refused to load, it would get stuck at the startup animation.

After a few more attempts, it kept spam restarting every time I tried to switch it on.

At that point, I was downloading the default ROM so I could reflash that onto the phone. However, I thought I could try using the superboot bat file again, and maybe that would fix the problem. BIG MISTAKE.

As soon as I ran that file, the phone COMPLETELY died. It will not start at ALL, it will not go into Bootloader, not go into Recovery mode, and not even go into Download (odin) mode.

The ONLY possible response you can get from it, is when you plug it into the PC. My PC seems to play that "detection" sound, same sound as when you plug in a USB, but it would just play that sound over and over again, as if im plugging/unplugging a device really quickly.

Now the problem is since I cant get into any mode whatsoever, its a bit hard to diagnose the phone. I know there is a "recovery" slot at the bottom of the phone that is accessible with a small pin, but I dont for the life of me know how that works or what it does.

Pull the battery and leave it out for a few minutes maybe? If its making those sounds on ur computer, it sounds like its continually restarting. I heard Google released the complete complete stock image for the gsm version. Look that up on phandroid and figure out how to flash it. Its not just the stock rom, its everything

hey mate, be careful with this. this phone is basically unbrickable. the only way you can brick it is to pull the battery while flashing a boot.img. believe me, i thought my first one died so i sent it back and ordered a replacement before they got the first one which was my mistake. the first one wasn't dead, lol.

But I mean, how do you even interact with the phone when it isnt detected by the PC (because its internally restarting all the time) and you cant get into bootloader or anything else? I tried leaving the battery out for a while, it didnt work

Is there somehow a way to access the internal memory of the phone and flash it directly even with the phone switched off? This is really frustrating as it seems the phone will not respond to ANYTHING..

i would either try xda, or contact Google/Samsung.
using the batch file shouldn't have killed it, as this just writes a boot.img to the phone. i can tell you that wherever you send it to, if they get it to turn on and it wasn't shipped to you unlocked, you'll be screwed because they'll then tell you your warranty is voided
that's what i was told. and that's why i had to sell my second one myself and lose out on some more dough.

This is the problem with no removable sd card on a rooted phone. Hard to fix problems like this without being able to access the sd card independently.

in it's current state he can't get it to boot into anything, if i'm understanding correctly. i had the exact same problem as i've stated above. then, apparently magically, it worked again.

this is why i'm rooted and running a custom ROM. i've had no issues since.

Yes that is true, it will not boot into any mode whatsoever, I do not even get the slightest response from the phone, not even the little "vibration" when u press the ON button. Just completely 100% dead.

An item under "Other Devices" called "OMAP4440" keeps appearing and dissapearing all the time, with the little "!" mark next to it indicating that there is a driver error. The drivers for this phone are fully installed on this same PC, and it use to work fine before it went dead.

your phone is most certainly not dead, mate. if it's showing up on your computer, it's alive. just not well.

the following is my post over at xda on how to get it to be recognized again on your computer should it stop showing up correctly while in fastboot, etc, if you already have the drivers installed.

The problem is, I do not have enough time to do any of those steps, since the driver appears for about 1 second, then goes off, back again for 1 sec, goes off etc etc...

I think I will just have to return this phone what a way to start with Android.. think I shoulda went for the Note..

forgive me for asking this, but trying to trouble shoot with you here lol
did you try another usb port on your computer? what about a different usb cable? it sounds like you're having connection issues. it's either the cable, the computer, or the usb port on the phone. phone is not dead though. it sounds like what happened while you were doing all the flashing is that you encountered this usb problem, hence why you have a sorta dead phone.

is there another computer all together you could try and a different cable?

I have done a search on OMAP4440 and it seems like thats the name of the processor used on the phone.. so I guess the phone's processor isnt running stable, it keeps restarting over and over again?

this seems more likely, hardware issue. sounds like you really have tried everything at this point. looks like you're right, time to exchange. sorry you're having a tough time mate

Maybe it's related to the battery..

I have a Galaxy Nexus here, and while trying to unlock it, I got a looot of problems, including the same as you are having.

The phone WON'T boot without a battery. Everytime I plug the USB cable without the battery, I get the same problem as you do: OMAP4440 flickering on the screen.

Once I put the battery back, flashing stops (and nothing is detected at all).

So, I would try this:
1. Check, recheck and triple-check your battery.
2. Check, recheck and triple-check your USB Cable.

Nope if a device forum is not posted in after a long enough period of time it becomes an archived device but if you go to the OG Droid forums you can find stuff posted back in 2009 that can be bumped if needed.

I have a similar problem.
I got the Galaxy nexus last week. Its been hooked up to the wall charger for about 36 hrs. It is totally dead and I can't turn it on (I had canceled the long distance on my land line and now missed a work-conference call because of this).

I removed the battery and put it back in after about 20 min, tried hooking it up to my laptop via USB..but absolutely nothing. It is just dead. Any further thoughts would be appreciated.

My nexus is exhibiting the same problem. I've never attempted to root it or modify the software in any way, and it just decided to die. Every once in a while I get the "Omap4440" entry to pop in and out of the device manager for about a minute (both with and without the battery in), then it goes away for a couple minutes before restarting.

Sorry to hear you guys are having issues with this . If you have not done any modification to the phone i.e. root then I would suggest taking it in for a warranty replacement. I suggest taking it to a store so they can test a new battery in case that was the problem.

Actually, the OP did report lots of things related to root, so it does belong in the root area. Although, it does appear that the OP probably does not have a VZW device (given his "UAE" reference), so I am a little tempted to move this thread to the non-VZW GNex root area, but unless we hear back for sure, I'm just going to leave it here (my subscription to this thread will let me know if he replies with a confirmation of device type).
