Android and Exchange

Does Android have any integration with Exchange? I use my iPhone for both personal stuff and for work. It can sync up with my email, calendar and contacts by talking to our OWA server at work. Can Android do that?
WELL you came to the right place! Im surprised no one has chimed in. OK as it sits now, no. however I am using the Rogers rom (canadian version) and it has exchange support. Its a tricky...well time consuming process to get Rogers on your G1 but is CAN be done.

That's disappointing. I've been very impressed with what I've found about Android today, but this is kind of a big deal for me. If I can't relatively easily get my work email and sync my phone calendar to my work calendar, it's pretty much a no-go on an Android phone for me. And I don't really want to mess with a kludgey hack. I want it to be integrated and to work well. It's not really something I want to spend a lot of time trying to make work. I just want it to work! :)

Yeah I know what you mean. Well "Rogers" has this option but they are technically not using the "Google phone" the phone does not have any Google logos to speak of. Technically its the HTC dream, I say that to say, as long as your in the US and the G1 is the "with Google" phone you most likely wont see exchange. That would kinda goes against the whole Gmail, calender, wave, ect thing.

That's kind of a bummer. I was getting pretty excited about the thought of dumping my iPhone. But it's just not going to happen unless I can easily access all of my email accounts and sync to my Exchange calendar. I have two Gmail accounts, a Yahoo account, an MSN account and my work account. I need to be able to sync to my work calendar. With the iPhone, this is beyond easy. Any replacement for it will have to be able to do that, as well.

Rooting the phone is VERY easy and that is really all that needs to be done. I highly encourage you to do it. I only rooted 1 week ago and I'm already a semi-pro at the different mods you can do. (Feel free to bash me all you coding experts!)

Are there mods for Exchange that will easily sync both mail and calendar?

I'm not against modding the phone, but for something like this, it should just be built into the OS.

The android 1.0 os as it was released wasn't intended for a business phone, or even a personal/business hybrid. Since it is open source and a lot of high-tech phone users are adopting it, there are developments being released. For instance, if you lived in Canada and were a Rogers subscriber, you wouldn't have even had to post your original question (Exchange is built in.)

To be fair, I don't think the iPhone had Exchange integration when it first came out, either, which is one reason so many of us here waited so long to try them out. We all had Blackberries. This is definitely a feature I have to have. There are lots of others that are just wants, but this is a definite need. I can't consider switching to an Android phone until I have this feature.

Does Android have any problem with people adding non-Gmail accounts?

I just read that the Palm Pre syncs to both Exchange and Google calendars and has no problem accessing any of the major email services. Come on, Google! Get with it! There are probably a few thousand people interested in an Android phone who can't get one because they need Exchange sync. I'd switch to an Android phone today if I could get that.

Not just rogers roms provide native Exchange support. You can also use haykuro's roms too. He integrated exchange into his build awhile back. Can find info about his roms on XDA Developers.

The Google OS, Android, does not have Exchange support built in. However, depending on how they market it the phone manufacturer/carrier can include MS exchange support.

If you purchase one that doesn't inculde exchange support you can
1) Purchase an application from the marketplace (eg Touchdownis one and I think it runs $25). This gives you exchange support and doesn't require you to "hack" your phone.

2) Hack you phone and change the firmware to a version with the HTC exchange support.

I set up my Rogers phone with Exchange sync in about 5 minutes. No problem at all - copied my WinMo settings from my old UTstarcomm and that was it.

More of a problem was IMAP for my "home" email acc't. Would have been nice if Rogers said somewhere that the outgoing smtp server needs to be smtp.rogerswirelessdata.com.

I tried setting up an Exchange account and it gives me an error message at the last step. The error message reads: "Failed to create the account. Please try again later."

I'm sure my authentication is correct as I go past that screen. It's when I get to the "Select the data to synchronize with the Exchange Server" part that I get this.

Any ideas?

Hi all,

Rogers and HTC will both tell you that the newly released HTC dream and magic will not support exchange. This is not true.

The integration with active sync works flawlessly for email, contacts and the calendar for both the HTC dream and magic under rogers.

However to get this to work you may need to get your exchange server administrator to modify your account security policy as both the dream and magic are not recognized devices.

You will get the error message "Failed to create the account. Please try again later." otherwise.

Hey guys, I had a couple questions about the exchange client on the Rogers version. If all the features are good I think I'll be getting it tomorrow! Three cheers for another three years with Rogers!

1. How quick is it to receive an email? Does it arrive before, at the same time, or after your computer receives it?
2. Can you send HTML emails, or just plain text like the bberry?
3. When you send an email on the device, does that email appear in the

I'm seriously surprised that everyone keeps harping on modding the phone to get exchange support. Go check out nitrodesk touchdown. It has full exchange 2003/2007 support as well as active sync. The developer is constantly pushing out new updates so it keeps getting better too. Seriously, why mod your phone when you can have this working with just a simple app install.

1. Using the native active sync client that comes with the rogers phones the email arrives seconds after it appears in my outlook mail folders. The same with calendar reminders.

2. Yes the phone supports reading html emails / replying to them.

3. Yes.

4. Don't know. Have not tried yet.

Hey thanks Redsz,

Just to clarify my second question, when you send an email from the dream, is it plain text or HTML? As in, how does it look on the recipient's screen? Blackberries just send plain text which is pretty lame IMO.

I've also had problems with the Bold not rendering simple charts properly... I wonder how well the Dream does that...

Hey Redsz,
Again, thank you for the exchange answers and for sending me that test email. You mentioned earlier that your exchange server admin needed to change your security policy settings. Do you happen to know what needed to be changed? I am having the same problem in setting up my Dream.

And yes, I JUST got it and I'm loving it so far. But I'm going to have to return it unless it works with my exchange server... :( Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Cyrket - Exchange By TouchDown

TouchDown from Nitrodesk handles all your exchange needs. Granted, it's $20 for the Pro License but that license allows you to set up full Activesync Push capabilities with your exchange server on your G1.

It was the first program I purchased when I got my phone and I have been very impressed with it. The latest update allows for contact sync, Out of Office, and more.

You can specify which folders you want to sync; sync the calendar, contacts, and (soon) even tasks. Their website says they are currently working on the task list and should have an update soon.

Thanks Huntsman,
Redsz and I are in Canada and the Rogers Wireless version of this phone comes with an exchange client out-of-the-box. I know, Canadians are cool...

I think there is some policy switching that needs to be done, I know for my company we probably have the security settings cranked to 11. If there are any system admins out there that would know what settings need to be changed that would be stellar.
