Really starting to get pissed at HTC for the delay/slow 2.1

Am I the only one that is starting to get really pissed at HTC for being soooo damn slow with the release of Android 2.1 for Hero?

First they skipped 1.6. Then they skipped 2.0. Now they have postponed 2.1 many times. Is this is the "standard" by HTC, my HTC Hero will by my last HTC phone.

(if you are satisfied by the time it takes to release a new OS, then don't post here - make a new topic or whatever)

Of course every one want a well tested and working OS on their phone.
However there got to be a limit for how long we should wait for a new OS.

I don't think it's the OS we're waiting for, but rather HTC making sure their Sense UI integrates into 2.1 properly.

Company reputation is very easy to lose, but difficult to build... they just want to get it right. I am happy to wait for a polished product.

Remember that 2.1 hasn't been out for that long. Not even Motorola's Droid got the upgrade (although it's supposed to come pretty soon), and they can pretty much just use the stock android. htc has got to integrate its sense ui (which is worth the couple of weeks more we have to wait...) and test it thoroughly. if they wouldn't, people would complain soon enough.

HTC Sense on 1.5 has been better than having 1.6 and probably 2.0

Since 2.1 was just released; this update is actually coming pretty fast.

I havnt seen all the pushed back dates you claim. The only comment from HTC re 2.x was 1st half of 2010; which they are delivering. Anything else you heard was speculation that you choose to listen to.

Now; the question is (imho) will 2.1 with HTC Sense be better than 2.1 stock OS?

I believe so if the custom rom folk are anything to go by. Alot of them seem to be actively pursuing a decent working rom with the Sense UI included.

I'm more than happy with my Modaco 1.5 in all honesty, with the memory tweaks and everything this phone is seriously snappy and it will take some doing for the stock 2.1 to beat it.

If there was a charge on this update then i'd be antsy, but we're getting it FREE. HTC can take as long as they want for all I care.
The point is not whether the update is free or not. What makes this an issue is backward compatability - even though Windows 7 has been released, all new software/updates are still mostly backward compatible to XP. In contrast the relatively small progression from Android 1.5 to 1.6 has resulted in an increasing list of apps/updates that we are locked out from. Android can't even incorporate the new Market in 1.5, which surely is just a glorified browser? Nobody is entitled to a new interface with extra widgets etc for free, but I'm sure the rantings would be less if we could just access the Android OS updates - unfortunately to do this legitimately we have to wait for the full HTC sense whether we like it or not.

Ditto. I must be turning into an old fart because all this "wantitnowwantitnowWAAH" attitude seems totally immature to me.

I'm with you on that. It's almost starting to put me off bothering to visit as I'm fed up of numerous threads started by somebody stamping their feet and acting like some spoilt little kid, just because they can't get what they want.

You think youre pissed off now because you havent got the update yet? Just wait until the update is actually released and you come to the realisation that it hasnt actually made you any happier or made your life any more complete. Because its just a firmware update. For a phone. A phone that already works.

@Nodders: spot on.

+1. Also, pray that it doesn't get rushed out and not be fully working like the latest Orange update, 2 weeks on and we still cant access lots of apps on the Market & niether HTC nor Orange know when it will be sorted out!

Not just a phone - so much more. Sure it still works as a phone, but we have all bought this to be a fully functioning Android system, and unfortunately the way Android is updated this affects us being stuck on 1.5 in a way that is different from other simple phone firmware updates (unless you just use it as a simple phone of course).

Yup, it's annoying. However bitching about it here won't bring it along any quicker, unfortunately. We're victims of Android's rapid rise I'm afraid. The OS is developing at pace, the carriers are clamouring for shiny new handsets to attract punters, and HTC are in the unenviable position of having to satisfy everyone. Remember they get no revenue directly from an upgrade to a handset already sold. My guess is we'll see 2.1 towards the end of April, once the Desire and Legend hit the market.

@phillevy: the new Market is a definite improvement, the ability to view screenshots of the apps being (imho) a huge step forward. You can tell a lot about an app by the way it looks.

@cwrig: I've always gone back to SenseUI as it just seems "right" for the Hero and how I make use of it. However I've been running a vanilla 2.1 build for the past week and have to say I'm not missing it too badly.

@The_Major: That's Google's screw-up.... again! Same thing happened when the Hero was originally released in the UK on Orange - the Market hadn't been updated with the device IDs.

*yawn*, yet another thread like this? When will people realise that if they wait for a polished product it is better than getting a rushed update.... Although I simply can't wait until the update, I am prepared to wait for a quality FREE update that I can enjoy.

It seems that in today's society people expect everything quickly and free. Want Want Want is a very childish attitude to have..... Mod close this one?

All the new phones Legend & Desire are due March and April. These are both running Sense over 2.1.

Personally about mid March / April the ROM update will be out.

When it happens, it happens. There's no point getting bugged about it.

Peace out...

Exactly, the update will be out just after the new phones are. Makes perfect sense to release after you bring out new phones with 2.1 already on.

Cant all the "when will it be here and i want it now" threads just be merged together as they are all following the same boring path

Nope, 'cos that screws up following who-said-what-to-whom. A better idea is not to start a new thread when a similar one already exists. ;)

Anyways, I'm closing this one.
