***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

:(
Can't believe I'm actually considering the dark side. Surely there's something better outside the apple ecosystem? Something based on android with a better camera? Is it really the best mp3/camera out there? Anyone have ideas if I want something dedicated to each function (one mp3 player, one camera)?

Thanks to everyone considering my situation and sounding off with advice.

Looks like the galaxy player's camera is no bueno :(

My three options right now are
1) Get Verizon SGN, put account on hold in January, continue to use it as my camera and mp3 player as I travel in Europe, come back to US and keep phone for a total of ~2.5 years
-advantage is lack of switching devices, camera is good enough to work with

2) Buy unlocked GSM SGN, get a plan in Spain and use that SGN until I come back to America, sell it and get a Verizon SGN at that point
-probably too complicated for me to get on a plan in Spain, and a hassle to do the buying and selling

3) Buy dedicated camera, dedicated mp3 player, worry about phone when I come back to America in August
- advantage is (probably) better camera, probably cheaper nexus (but at the cost of the camera and mp3 player which I'd have to resell). disadvantage of having to search for what camera and mp3 player I want to purchase. disadvantage of traveling in europe for 6 months with 3 different devices (phone, camera, mp3 player).

Probably still sticking to #1 and buying away on the 15th. Any other opinions appreciated

*611, pressed 0 immediately. Reason for call: Upgrade.

I said I'm calling about the midwest region (key!!) promotional discount on a 3G to 4G upgrade of $100. I was wondering if this can be applied to my account. She put me on mute for a minute as she looked up the promotion. She then found it and notated my account that I was approved for it (only can be applied at purchase). I inquired how the store rep would see the discount and she said the store sales person would have to check the notes on the account since they have access to the same system/notes she was composing.

I did the above yesterday, and redid it again today to verify it was noted. Worked first time both calls.

P.S. It apparently expires on 12/31.

I tried this earlier today (twice). I am in Milwaukee, and the rep explained to me that this offer was only applicable to the Chicago-area. The second rep I talked to was able to offer me a $50 bonus upgrade discount though and added it to my account notes so that I can take advantage of it later.

I've been due for an upgrade since May when my 1-year contract for my Dinc ended.

Wait...what? That is not true. You are saying that any call such that that call regards this discount contains a lie given that the caller did not receive the aforementioned flier? That has no logical nor ethical basis.

If I call and say "I saw that my friend received the flier, but I did not. Is there any way I can get this discount, too?" how is that lying?

Are you eligible for NE2 or just on an annual upgrade?

I can't tell from your comment, maybe you don't like the Rezound?

There's an old saying about cameras - the best camera is the one you have with you when you need it - the worst camera is the fancy kit you don't have when the moment comes.

The latest HTCs have undergone a generational update in their camera software, first in many years, and I think the results are outstanding (I'm enjoying a port of it over to my older HTC dual core).

Sample pictures -

As for an MP3, it has Beats audio, the package that everyone either loves or hates. To me that just says that it's worth a listen, maybe it's right for you.

Wow, those are some great pics.

The 15th, which is Thursday.

If you buy it now, it'll stay in your purchased apps list in the Market, and you should be able to download it to your Nexus. (At least, that's what I'm counting on, because that's what I've done. :p) Can anyone more knowledgeable verify?

Didn't see an answer to this posted. I'm not more knowledgeable, but I happen to know a lucky guy who got his GN at RadioShack. I was supposed to go with him and I bailed thinking it was a waste of time! That'll teach me, right?

He says that it's just like any other device in the sense that the Market will carry over your previously purchased apps. However, he's unsure exactly which ones are missing, but at least 3 that he can think of are no longer there (some picture editor, a game called "Diversion" and a game called "DroidWords") Luckily, all 3 of these were free apps he had downloaded, so he wasn't too worried about it. Took about 3 1/2 minutes to get them back with the rest, but just thought it was weird they'd be left out when 50 or so other apps made the journey just fine.

Oh well, hope that helps. Have a good day!

btw... I don't know if anyone else has suggested this yet, but I think the only reason the offer is targeted to Chicago-area Verizon customers is because of the new availability of AT&T 4G there. They are probably trying to lock down customers before they think about switching.

Cheetara just texted:

I'm going right now to my boss to tell him I'm taking the day.

Did you truncate her message? Shouldn't it have ended with "unless the morons running this launch decide to move it AGAIN"? :D

Seriously, though, that's great thanks for the news Han! The 15th is starting to line up...Does Cheetara think there will be any PR or communication about the release or will Thursday be a silent launch?

My wife has the same opinion and I don't blame either one of you one bit. Her Evo Shift is not rooted, gives her well over a day of use without any tricks whatsoever, the bloatware doesn't affect her, her phone runs smooth and she's happy with the Sense interface because every part of it that she uses just works and works well. Everything she needs lives on the seven homescreens, she goes to the app drawer once every blue moon.

Had our first (or even my second) Android phones run as well as that, I'd have never bothered to discover and pursue rooting.

She doesn't want me rooting her phone and under the theory of not fixing something that isn't broken, I couldn't be happier.

Everything is a trade-off and you nailed it - there is no perfect phone, just the perfect phone for you (or as close as you can get) at the time.

My wife felt the same with her Eris until about 2 months ago when it froze up, kept giving insufficient memory errors, wouldn't let her send or receive a single text, and died within 8 hours of being off the charger while never leaving her purse.. I rooted it, cleared the cache, did a system reset, threw a ROM on it and it's run beautifully ever since...better than my OG Droid as a matter of fact. She now says she doesn't really need a new phone, whereas 2 months ago she was screaming she needed a new one. If it aint broke, don't fix it, but if it is, fix it! :) I'll probably leave the Nexus pretty stock when I get it. If the need arises to do something that requires root (free wifi tethering comes to mind) then root I shall, but no more custom roms for me.

How is the att service on the note ... and do you think you could live with it as your main cell phone?
AT&T service is solid on the Note (seems better than the GSM GNex actually).

I didn't think I could live with the giant phone at first (you really will spend the first few day staring at it going, man that phone is HUGE!). But at the end of the first week, I was absolutely loving it and the phone just didn't seem all that big to me. Screen is way brighter than the GNex, battery runs forever, and the call quality was great. Everything about the device is super fast. Very curious to see how ICS runs on it.

A toss-up whether I'd pick the GSM GNex or the Note when it comes to international travel. The big screen is very attractive and makes a compelling case of potentially even leaving my tablet at home.

Let me know how it goes with yours!
