sooo...I apologize for the newbie question here, even though I've been following this thread and phone a good month prior to the original expected launch date :)

Everyone keeps talking about the Nexus' software buttons and the lack of hardware buttons on the phone. My confusion comes from the fact that there are three buttons under the screen. Having the original Droid, I don't understand what is different here from what I am currently using...(how is this a big improvement to previous designs).

The buttons on the Nexus are software based, meaning they can disappear as needed (i.e. when watching a full-screen video), giving more overall screen space.

The buttons on the Droid are fixed capacitive buttons, while the buttons on the Nexus are on the actual screen. The 70 pixels at the bottom of the screen are reserved for buttons. When watching a video (in a supported app) those buttons disappear and you can use all 4.65" of 720p screen to view your video.

Also buttons on the screen allow for mods such as adding a search bar or moving the menu buttons:

Morning complaints:
1) I hate it when my toothbrush unexpectedly initiates a gag reflex. My stomach is irreparably upset for the morning after that.

2)Its raining outside and the bottoms of my pants are wet. I tend to sit cross legged in my chair at work, but if I do that now my butt will get wet too. I imagine they

When viewing movies, the buttons will disappear, giving you the entire 4.65 (or possibly larger, EarlyMon calculated it at around 4.7" total) inch screen to use.

SPK may refer to:

  • SPK (band), an Australian industrial music group
  • Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (Norwegian: Statens Pensjonskasse)
  • Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant, one of the three main types of pancreas transplantation
  • Socialist Patients' Collective (German: Sozialistisches Patientenkollektiv)
  • Sour Patch Kids (soft, delicious, sour candies)
  • Special Provision for Kira, a fictional organization from the Death Note manga series
  • Strategic Plan Campine (Dutch: Strategisch Plan Kempen)
  • Thygeson's superficial punctate keratopathy (TSPK), an eye disease
Nothing like eggs, bacon, and pancreas-kidney transplant in the morning...

I know that I'm going to get ninja'd on this but... The three "soft" buttons you see in ICS are buttons that appear and disappear as required by the associated application. They are not "permanent" capacitive buttons like you see on android phones to date. This new approach should result is a better use of the screen as well as a more intuitive user interface (at least that's the plan). :D

Because that's how its been done all along.
I just feel it promotes more false hope and I think we've all had enough of that over the past month or so. A blanket "New RUMOR...12-15" is more appropriate. Until Verizon officially announces something or we can all knowingly walk in and purchase the phone, there should be no dates stated as fact. That being said, I respect Steven and am greatful for all the help he has given me and others in the past. Not really a gripe as much as an observance.

I've been trying to order a screen protector from Steinheil's website and it appears to be down. Anyone know where else I can get one?...I wanted the ultra crystal but it looks like they don't make it for the GNex...I don't want the new flex one because it's a wet application..that leaves the oleophobic (sounds like a disease) screen protector. I've looked everywhere with no luck. Maybe more will come out once this phone is released.

I just received the oleophobic one. I have been using the ultra crystal on my DroidX and love it. Comparing the two side by side (not installed on phones) they look very similar in their clarity. Color is identical and they swipe similarly, no lag. Of course, seeing it installed on the Gnex when we get it will make a difference. As a side note, the size of the DroidX and the Gnex are similar, however the screen protector for the Gnex is way bigger. I think I will love getting a device that fully takes advantage of the size of the device.

The droid buttons aren't part of the screen.

The Nexus buttons are a part of the screen, and they can hide when you play a movie, making the screen bigger.

So there are two rows of buttons on the screen that can be hidden? Perhaps if I got a chance to actually hold this frakin phone, I would have been able to see that. It was obvious to me that the top row was s/w based, but the bottom row looks just like the buttons on my OG...from the pics, at least.

I am sure I am ninja'd by now, but just in case, the GNex has buttons on the screen, so they could change depending on the app, or disappear altogether, every other phone, the buttons are always there (they may be capacitive, so there is no actual pressing action, but they never change or go away).

yep, ninja'd bad.

From what I'm hearing it wasn't 4G related at all unless the bugfix pushed out contained a change to the radio in some way.

Delay from 9th was definitely a bugfix.
I agree. Google wallet seems like a convienent scapegoat, but if so, then why wasn't it on the GSM versions as well.

Other sources have also somewhat confirmed the software updates as well.

For the record, I'm not saying Thursday is a pipe dream. I'm 60/40 on the side of release for Thursday, and I'm holding onto my day off.

Still, I think a lot of us are like that poor abused dog that flinches whenever someone wants to pet him. Is Verizon going to stroke our ears or pull and twist them?

Who the frak knows. Best to keep your expectations low. Less disappointment that way.

I am hoping that we hear anything by the end of the day.In my opinion if we do not hear anything,Thursday is probably a wash.I would be shocked to see a Wednesday announcment for a next day release.(but pleased never the less.)

Haha, I am not uncalm yet. But like I said, so far, the first poster who had a rumor of a delay has been right 7 out of 7 times now. All the rumors in the world don't equal fact. It will release when Verizon decides to release it. I still hope for the 15th, but what started out as one rumor last week, (of which I remember distinctly posting "I don't buy it") became fact as the info started pouring in after stores open and people called to check on their appts. It is getting to that time now, so we shall see.

I can't find this post(er) - can you link me to it?

Does anyone else have the feeling VZW is leaking release dates to watch us latch on to hope, and then they laugh and release a later date for entertainment value? ;)

"Did y'all see those androidforum guys panic when we leaked the new date? That was hilarious!"

Fish => Lure

I've been telling my boyfriend this for weeks. He just shakes his head in exasperation at me.
