Root Do not Factory Reset your Rooted Phone

Awesome it worked. And it appears as my phone is completely reset to original settings and everything. No more superuser. I had it rooted and had Inferior Human Organs installed on it and decided to revert back to the original settings. So I thought flashing it to stock and then unrooting it would allow me to do a factory reset boy was I wrong. Anyways thanks again for this solution you are a life saver.

yes, xionia was written for the optimus s originally anyway and the dev later ported it to the v.

So, i'm pretty desperate lol.
I bought a phone that was rooted with Gingerbread, and I had the guy unroot it before he gave it back to me ..thought it was. well so i tried to do the factory reset last night bc my calendar app wasn't working.

then now I'm just stuck on the clockwork mod screen and I know NOTHING about rooting/unrooting etc.

I just want my phone back. lol. I saw you posted a lot on the DO NOT FACTORY RESET thread, and I was really hoping you could help me out. I have been reading thread after thread and I found a lot but, not specifically for the Clockwork Mod. is there any possible way you can help me? I'd really appreciate it.. I NEED DUMMY lesson haha. anyways, thank you in advance !

I think the thread name should be changed to "Do not Factory Reset your Rooted & ROM'ed Phone". Many people, like me, only root to get rid of the bloatware. A factory rest should work just fine in that case.

It will take 5-10min.for the initial reboot.

I put everything on the SD card from a computer and booted up--I didn't have to do any terminal emulating. The phone refused to go to recovery before I followed your instructions.

Now I'm up & running!!!

I'm not certain, AndyOpie150 would know. I think you'd be okay, but just to be safe, I would unroot with z4 first. How old is your phone? Like, is it older than July or so?

the problem with the factory reset is custom recoveries.
they don't handle the reset right and go into a bootloop.
as long as you still have the stock recovery and stock rom, rooting itself shouldn't affect your ability to factory reset. Any custom recovery will bootloop after a privacy-menu factory reset, though.
the main confusion I think is that most guides to rooting include installing a custom recovery. that's only neccessary if you need a gui for backup and restore, and to flash zip files.
you can actually make backups in terminal or with adb without a custom recovery, but it's a little ugly for most users to try.

I've flashed my phone back to the stock ROM. It's rooted. But it's running the stock ROM. Is is okay for me to factory reset at this point? I think I may still have a custom recovery..

No, it is not okay. If you don't have the stock recovery, then wipe your user data in the recovery, otherwise you will brick your phone.

formatting data and cache in recovery will do the same thing to the phone (clear user data and downloads/installed apps) as either reset mentioned above.

A little embarrassed to be posting here, but I made the mistake to going through with the factory reset with an unrooted phone but custom recovery. I went ahead and flashed Xionia_CWMA_12518.4_VM_Recovery.zip but now when I try to boot, it takes me to:

Android system recovery
formatting data...
formatting cache...
factory reset...
rebooting

then the phone tries to boot and hangs at the LG logo. This happens when I try to boot into recovery as well. I tried seeing if I could flash something through adb but my device isn't listed/recognized (possibly because I'm trying to access it while it's stuck at the LG logo?) Anyone else had this problem?

If I would of had a custom recovery installed I could have gotten the phone straightened out(even without a backup)

I have noticed an alarming trend by those with the Hitachi screen.
They root there phones then try to use the recovery in ROM Manager which causes the black screen.
Then thinking they can fix the black screen in the recovery problem, they use the factory reset in the privacy menu.
Now they have a really serious problem that at best will leave them with a phone with very limited usage and capabilities.

As long as you have a good working recovery you can get yourself out of anything you can mess up.
Without a good working recovery your just a mistake away from a brick.

good info from experience is definitely worth listening to.

from looking at the kernel code, and hex editing lge init, and what zefie figured out about stock recovery and factory reset, it looked to me like all 3 of stock kernel, recovery, and init were required to handle a factory reset.
what i hadn't considered, that backs up your statement somewhat...
the custom su breaks some things.
like adb bugreport... it gives a whole slew of errors from su during a section of the bugreport.

it's quite possible that the factory reset process uses su at some point, and that at least could cause some problems if it is happening.
like i said, I'll have to check it out.
if using asadullah's tweaked stock rom, flash_image is in it, and adb is set to allow mounting r/w, so if I'm lucky i won't really brick something trying to verify.

Hey bigsupersquid. Maybe you could also check into the relationship between the su permissions and installing the latest Busybox version.
It seems like as long as the permissions on su are set to rwsr-sr-x the install is fine, with very few having to use the secondary install location of /system/xbin.

Most file managers will only change permissions to rwxr-xr-x. You wouldn't think this would be a problem, but it's starting to look that way.

What would be the easiest way to have an OP change the permissions of su to rwsr-sr-x. This would guarantee the proper install of the newest version of Busybox and keep the OP's from trying to skip it because it wont install. Then try to install the flash_image and recovery or worse, try to install the recovery from ROM Manager when that fails. BIG PROBLEM!
