Droid Dent Fix!

So after I finally got my new droid, I turned the phone over and noticed a nice DENT in the speakerphone grill...sound familiar! After trying my best to remove the dent from the delicate sticker, I was still not happy with the results. So after searching the net looking for a replacement sticker with no success, I decided to fix this problem myself.

After much consideration and trial & error, I discovered that the best material to use to replace the sticker was solid brass mesh. It has to be just the right MPI (mesh per inch) not to interfere with the sound quality of the speakerphone. And it also has to be thin enough to fit underneath the battery cover without raising it more than a mm.

Here are the results...







I had to buy the material in bulk, so if anyone is interested in a cheap fix to "droid dent", feel free to hit me up at elijah(dot)357(at)hotmail(dot)com. This isnt rocket science, anyone can fix this problem themselves. Its finding the right materials thats the challenge. Bronze mesh looks better, but it turns dark really fast...brass doesn't tarnish. Stainless is another possiblity, but the brass looks closer to factory in my opinion?

Anyway...

I hope this info helps those who are OCD like myself when it comes this issue. I wish motorola would have done this to begin with. Outside of this small cosmetic problem, the droid is awesome!

I really want to make all the gold parts on my phone silver, and that is a good first step. Although, Since my phone was bought on two year contract, am I allowed to alter it? or do I technically have to wait till the two years is up?

Cause If my phone breaks, and they see the alterations, I dont think they would be happy...

any thoughts?

This merely slips over the "sticker" thats on the phone now...extremely easy to remove!

I just spent the last two hours returning emails and PM's.

I never intended to sell these for a profit. What do you guys think a fair price would be for a replacement screen?

I was thinking of sending one of my precut screens and enough extra brass mesh to make at least two more screens with every order. Although one of these screens alone will last the lifetime of your droid.

Do you think that $4.99 is asking too much?

I know that I'd pay that much for piece of mind, but what do you guys think? That's a little over a dolllar per screen, and it'll cover shipping if I just slap a stamp on it and send it US Mail.

Any thoughts?

Very cool. I think that looks even better than the original. Motorola should have used this instead of an easily dented sticker.

Unfortunately, the speakerphone area on the droid is vulnerable to dents. Motorola covered the speakerphone with a bronze screen that is merely a sticker. Some droid owners have these "dents" on their phone.

To prevent or mask these "dents", I simply cut a replacement screen out of solid brass mesh and it turned out pretty decent.

I'm thinking that fortunately, you dont have a dented speakerphone grill. So unless you'd like to prevent the "droid dent", as its referred to...you'll have no interest in replacing your screen.

However, this post is for those who do have a dented speakerphone grill and would like to fix/mask it.

Yeah...my speakerphone grill was dented. The speakerphone grill is just a metalic sticker.

I never really intended to sell these. I just wanted to help out those who have had the misfortune of discovering the dent in their speakerphone.

Anyone can make these screens themselves, I've been 100% transparent with the design and material used. Its just a real pain in the arse trying to find the right size brass mesh. I had to buy a roll of it, otherwise I would have been charged $8 for a 3" square. Being that I have an entire roll of the mesh, I figured I'd save people the headache of trying to find the right size brass and just sell what I have left.

You should ask permission here on this forum (and others) just to put a note or link in your sig. I don't see anything wrong with selling on these forums as long as you're low key about it and aren't being a sales-pitchy greedy bastard (-which it's obvious you're not). It's a tremendous help to guys that have heartache from spending so much on a techno-fever gotta-have only to accidentally bash in the screen.

are you selling them precut to fit the droid? or just shipping a piece of the mesh. I went to home depot today, but they didnt seem to have the right size mesh. they all had very big holes. it was like 8 bucks for like a 10 foot roll though. that could make a lot of screens.
