New Droid owner with Downloading Apps Question

Howdy, New Moto Droid owner here in Denver CO. WOW what a change. I've got a question on the downloading of apps. When I try, a screen comes up that says the app has access to various functions including (I think from memory), e-mail, internet access, contacts, and so on... What is this about? Do these apps then have access to hack my droid?

These are to let you know what sections that a given app is accessing ... very little risk... but an app that changes screen brightness ...doesn't need your personal data ot internet access ... so that would be a sure sign of a possible naughty app.
