Official ICS 4.0.X Discussion and Links Thread

in 2.3, the colour scheme on the phone (clock, 3g signal bar, phone keypad, etc) were green which I really liked.

however in 4.0.3, everything is now blue! is there a way to change it back to green? I can find no "scheme" kind of thing in settings.

thanks.
I doubt it. I however like the blue, so maybe give it a chance. Otherwise, you can always use a launcher.

I switched my phone on this morning and got the OTA update instead of doing a manual one. Very smooth and fast:D The new notification bar looks great too. Instead of a grey background, it's now partially see through and you can swipe to the left or right to clear a notification instead of hitting the clear button. The media player is also able to be controlled from the notification bar too.

Hi guys I'm new here, not an expert on android but would like to share some problems I faced with 4.0.3 on my Nexus S.

1) it cannot find 2g networks, I have to keep data enabled on for it to find any network. but once the network is detected it stays working even if I turn off data enabled.
however, when I was in the elevator with data enabled off, it didn't locate any network when I got out until I had to manually redo the process.

2) I'm getting mixed problems with contacts names showing when they call me, and on the call log, some appear with name some only a number even though it is saved in my contacts, I'm gonna try to delete all my contacts and then reimport them into my account and see how it goes.

previously the search widget was something I can place in any one of the 5 home screens.

now the search bar is always on the screen no matter which home screen I'm on. I know android is free and everything because search is where they make the money, but on every home screen? a bit much. please, pretty, please allow a way to get rid of that.

as an alternative, why not replace one of the 5 things on the bottom (currently phone, contacts, all apps, txt msg and browser) with the search icon? I'd change the contacts for the search icon.

It can be turned off but the space where it sat can't be used. So it's pretty pointless at this point, but a future update may change things.

Hi everyone,

I'm also newbie with Android phone too. I've had my Nexus S for 2 months now and really like it. However, with this new update, I don't like where they place the search bar....totally agree with rockhammer.

I also have another issue. With the old system 2.3.6, I was able to use my songs as ringtones but the new system 4.0.3 doesn't give option of set song as ringtone. Any ideas how to do so? Thanks.

Oh, and if I don't like this new system, how do I go back to previous one 2.3.6?

Thank you!

Ringtone: If you have Realplayer or DoubleTwist (I forget which), it has a "use as ringtone" option for any song on you're phone.

Going back: I think you have to root and reflash to do that. And if you're new to this kind of thing, I'd don't recommend it.

Hi DexTyler,

Thanks for your help. Here's another stupid question, do I download Realplayer or DoubleTwist from Android market? Currently, when I go to music, it plays whatever songs I choose so not sure what I am having.

Yes, you have to get them from the Android Market. The current player is the default one which doesn't have the ringtone option. And after looking at the two apps, DoubleTwist is the app that has the ringtone option.

Personally, I use DoubleTwist. The interface is very easy to use and you can play, pause and skip tracks from the lock screen.

Hope that's helped;)

A couple of questions on notifications:

1) what/where is that new notification bar? what's so good about it?

2) in 2.3 I could bring up list of notifications from the menu button in the home screen, but this choice is no longer showing at that same spot. where do I find it?

The new notification bar works just like the old notification bar except now you can dismiss individual notifications instead of all of them. Just drag it down from the top of the screen.

I personally like the placement of the new search bar. I didn't at first, but it doesn't actually take up any extra screen space. You still get the 4x4 widget space. And since you don't have to add the 4x1 search widget anymore, it actually saves screen real estate.

To add your own ringtones, all you have to do is put them in "media/audio/ringtones" on your internal storage. You can do the same with alarms (in "media/audio/alarms") and notifications (in "media/audio/notifications"). If these folders aren't in your storage already, you can simply make them yourself.

I personally like Ringdroid (link: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ringdroid) to add my own ringtones.

Ok ,so after looking at this "great" version of Android ,i realized that Google disappointed me once again !
1: Takes forever to charge ! [4:40h from 10% compared to 3h max with 2.3.7];
2: Effects work and don't in camera ,not to say video is recorded in a weird way when finally using effects !;
3: Takes forever to boot ,what the ... ??? it used to take 8 seconds with CM7 to boot up ,with 4.03 takes about 20-25 ,why the delay ??;
4: And i know this is not Google's fault ...no actually it is for making this system so fragmented ! > not all the apps work X(

Conclusion ...my conclusion : [I9023] For the moment i don't think it is a good idea to upgrade ,it is a nice and very smooth OS ,unlike ginger ,but at this moment it's not optimized for our NS's & like you well know ,we'll have to deal with this ... until Google releases some bug-fixes ,and there will be many :(

Received the ICS update last night here in India. Enjoying every moment of exploring new features. Till now all seems to be running smooth except two glitches:

  1. Contacts: Although the nos. are saved in the contacts, when I receive a call the name is not displayed. Not for all contacts but for few.
  2. Google Talk: The multiple account login is bugging me a bit. Of the 2 accounts synced one is a Google Apps account and other a Gmail account. Since Chat services is not enabled in the Google Apps account I am always getting an error of Login issues (for the apps a/c). How can I disable auto login for this apps a/c ???

Also wanted to know from other users... how is the battery performance post update ???

OK, so I got the update yesterday and am not much impressed.

Issues:
1) something is seriously wrong with my wifi, which is unbelievably intermittent with the speed test app never successfully completing a test. My girlfriends nexus s, still on gingerbread, has no issues. Android with a buggy connection is horrible. Will test a few more networks to see if the problem occurs everywhere.
2) I have the issue with peoples names not being displayed, does not happen with everyone but quite a few.

Other things I am not liking:
1) physics engine / touch input doesn't seem quite right, I used to be able to flick through pages and lists with ease but now I can't move through so easily. It's like they have put treacle down so it slows down faster.
2) far too much screen real estate is being used by the updated gmail app. The soft buttons are permanently present and the top bar is bigger than before. This means you cannot see so many messages. The old behaviour where options only appeared once a message was selected was much better.
3) it's fugly. The rich black menus were much nicer than the funny grey shadewand I don't like the oversized headers in loads of the default apps. Things look cheaper and less sophisticated like a toy!

Don't get me wrong, there are lots of things to like - the notifications, reordered menus and task switcher are to name a few - but I feel like they didn't think things through with older phones with physical dedicated keys and smaller screen sizes.

Anyone else have these problems?

One big issue i have is the in the Stock browser, it seems like it can't handle big websites at all. Especially sites with alot of images.

If anyone could try this site and see if its only for me i would appriciate it.

Try going to VG.NO
and then press "menu" and "request desktop version"
For me the first pics load, then the rest doesnt render, then everthing becomes white :(

Also, this morning i tried watching several flash-videos in the browser, and after about 30 sec to 5 minutes, the browser just shuts down.

I really like the new update and all, and flash plays finally smooth and framerate is good. But the browser perfomance is really killing it for me.

I installed ICS about an hour ago. My Nexus S is a i9023 GSM and everything went very smoothly - simple update. Have only found one widget that isn't working (extended controls power widgets), but other than that the rest is super smooth. "Ironman666" try and update your Adobe Flash to latest version to resolve issues in ICS. I must say this seems to have made my Nexus so much more responsive. No WiFi problems. Need to make some calls to see how that side of things is panning out. Webbrowse is absolutely blistering compared to GB one. So far so good. Love it :D

I have absolutely no WiFi issues, WiFi functionality has been improved hugely compared to 2.3.6!
In 2.3.6 I had a lot of problems with WiFi in which it "looses" the connection but the icon stays green. I had to disable and enable WiFi to get it to work again. This was a basic Gingerbread problem since the Galaxy Gio that my wife uses has the exact problems as well.
As for the other problems mentioned here, charging takes no longer then with 2.3.6 and I really love the new UI. It takes a little getting used to but since I allready have a Honeycomb tablet it is very easy to get to grips with.
The new search bar is great in my opninion, for a Nexus S you could do without since you allready have a search button but I like it anyway.
The phone is now way more responsive and faster, it really feels like a new phone.
The boot time is not that much slower compared to stock 2.3.6 so that is not a problem for me and anyway how often do you reboot your phone? For me it is about once or twice a week or when I need to turn it off. I allso have a Blackberry Torch, that takes more then two minutes to boot!

One thing that I have noticed is that the first boot after flashing takes a long time and the subsequent "application optimisation" as well. I didn't find the phone to be very responsive when it was ready. I did another reboot and it was much quicker that time!

Allready done that. Still, big websites with alot of images just doesnt load for me. Flash is set to "on demand"

Can someone test this for me? I want to know if its something wrong in my end.

The mobile version of the site works perfectly, but the desktop version is indeed problematic. After a while everything seems to load, but it takes ages. But the performance is better then the honeycomb browser.

About phone numbers appearing without names - I saw that too, but then figured out that the number that doesn't have a name or pictures next to it - is a second phone number you have for the person right above it.

So for example:

John Doe(image): 222-444-5555
_________________222-666-7654

That second number belongs to John Doe (or the image associated with him)

When I receive a call the name apears on the screen. After I enter the call log the name apears there for 1 second then it disapears. My call log its now full with numbers with no names. My entire contacts list is from my Gmail account. Some of my contacts are with names in the call log. Can not figure out whats the problem. If i reenter the number from my log into the person acount it works fine. But thats not the solution because I got many numbers.
Hope I will find an answer to my problem

For those having WiFi issues, try rebooting the phone. I've used some custom ROMs and Kernels that would loose the WiFi connection and then get stuck when trying to turn it off. Rebooting did help sometimes. If that doesn't work, you may want to consider doing a Data Wipe/Factory Reset from the recovery console and install the update file again. This will remove all of your settings and installed apps, but it won't touch your internal storage ("SD card").

For those having issues on "large" websites. The stock Android browser has always had issues with large pages with many pictures. I feel that the updated browser finally does a decent job at rendering pages. Scrolling through pages is finally smooth, though it does seem to take a little longer to load pages overall.

The VG.no site does seem to have issues rendering properly, but performance is still pretty smooth. I get the feeling that the VG.no web designers know that it doesn't render properly on some mobile devices but expect people to use their "touch" version of the site on those devices.
