Help Motorola Locks the Milestone?

I just saw this posted on Howard Forums.

How much truth is there to this?

I planned on buying a Milestone from Telus when it is launched but now I am not so sure.

Read this forum post on the Motorola Users Milestone Forum. Its disappointing that they have created two phones which are supposedly similar (droid and milestone) but in reality there are subtle differences which make the Milestone not the phone to buy today IMO:

Yes it's true. Unfortunately I bought a Milestone before it was clear how stupid Motorola acts. I think it's better to buy another - non Motorola - device.

I understand the gist of what they're saying here, the Milestone kernel has been locked down.

Is there anything preventing us from using Droid firmware on the Milestone (as long as we don't run the radio update)? Doesn't that include the kernel?

The root system out isn't a full root atm i have mine rooted and it will make no difference if you read the article at the top the only time it will happen is if they take away this digital signature.

I am debating putting mine on ebay atm along with my hero and maybe picking up a Nexus one or wait and see what comes out shortly.

So, what exactly does this mean? Mine is being shipped out =x

It means if they don't unlock the code we won't be able to install custom roms on it, ie like the ones out for the Droid install the rom and it overclocks the cpu to 800mhz/1000 etc.

Means we can only use the roms that are released by Google so we will see updated roms like Android 2.1 is out in a few months but that's it.

I haven't gotten my phone yet so I haven't been able to explore around but that includes examples of gensoid, nesoid, etc? Or different story as these are available on the android market?


Edit: basically, how does this affect the average user? I'm obviously not a tech saavy and it'd suck not to have custom roms. Is there anything else? Sorry, still new at this phone/tech business

Though the Milestone is still locked for custom ROMs we have a few guys that play with it trying to implement the mod for the users that realy want it. I think this will be more convenient after the 2.1 update.

They did but i guess some found a way around it, check this thread already some tried it i am currently running one on mine was easy to do.

You can still install those apps no issue. AFAIK the Telus Milestone isn't rooted so as of right now you can install any app that doesn't require root access.

however once the phone is rooted you'll be able to install any app you can find, you will however not be able to install a custom rom(which is basically a modded OS). That's all. For the average user it means nothing.

Well it seems people are running custom roms on there euro milestone so i don't think i matters about the lock they found a way

Euro Milestones, at least the earlier ones are rootable, the Telus Milestone is not however/

Yet. They said the euro milestone would be unrootable but they rooted it. Soon the telus milestone will be rooted

My fingers are crossed. In the meantime I managed to copy the apps I needed off of my old Dream. Just makes getting updates a pain.

Phone seems plenty fast to me at the moment, but I am coming from the HTC Dream. OC'ing it would just drain the batter faster.

I agree. I came from a dream that averaged about 13000ms for benchmarkPi at it's best and now get about a third of that time. Big difference and I can't really say speed was a huge problem for me with the dream either. Screen, memory, and lack of a 2.X upgrade path were my big issues and the Milestone takes care of all of them.

Yes, but now if you read the article clearly, it states that all linux based files require the digital signature of Motorola to be accessed, repressing all rooting. Maybe I am wrong though. Hopefully wrong since I am buying one of these

Yea. So did the euro version but they found a whole in the firmware and thats how they gained root access. Its only a matter of time. Soon people are just going to find what the signature is and use that to get it to run

Really? I honestly didnt know that the euro ones were locked down as well,but for the sake of the Telus Milestone(and my purchase) may this happen extremely fast
