I had the Gnex for 3 days now, and I am on my second one. To make a long story short I am going to give this thing a few more days, and if there is not a fix for my issues, I will be returning this phone.

I LOVE THE PHONE, it is BLAZING FAST.... HOWEVER...

  • The factory mail client will not allow for PUSH email
  • The factory email will not pull emails properly. They will pull, then hide, then reappear, and then dissapear, and not show up at all.... randomly
  • The volumn on the speakerphone is unusable
  • The email accounts STILL do not sync to outlook for (emails, contacts, tasks, and calender) without companion link
  • The camera editor that was sooooooo highly acclaimed sucks donkey nuts. You can't eliminate red eye like it claims
  • mail clinet will not let you batch mode delete emails
  • when you go into accounts to add a facebook account, it doesnt add it to the list, this not syncing your contact pictures, and status updates like it did on every other OS
  • NO PINCH TO ZOOM on any email clients.
  • The RSS onscreen feed Sucks

I have always been an early adopter of new software, so I realize most of these issues will be fixed, however I use this phone for work, and if the email doesn't come in, it renders the phone useless. Android needs a better QC faze in their launch process.

any ideas people please let me know.

The factory email pushes just fine for me.
The factory email pulls emails properly for me.
IMO the speakerphone works just fine and I'm half deaf.
Emails sync on outlook for me. Haven't tried to sync anything else with it though.
Its a phone first camera last, if you need better photos then use a real camera ;)
Facebook and Google had it out over the contacts syncing, not a fault of the phone.
I can pinch to zoom in my email

I think you for your response, but I'm calling shenanigans. There is not a PUSH setting for the stock email client; so this is impossible. The shortest setting is 5 minutes.

If you go through the forums you will see 50 people posting on the speakerphone issues.

No need for the go buy a camera comment. The iphone camera is actually better then most stock point, and shoot camera's, the RAZR's isn't bad as well. I was actually referring to the editing tool, not the camera itself. I took some great low level light images.

Most email issues you'd probably be better served with another email client. Outlook syncing isn't supported in the stock client, and my own opinion is that "syncing" is outdated. I want my emails available on my phone, computer, or any other computer I go to without having to plug it in, but that's me.

I doubt there will be an external volume fix. Best resolution is to increase the sound of your ringtones using ringdroid, or similar.

The other issues you talk about are best dealt with using 3rd party apps. Camera editor is basic, yet I was able to get it to do red eye reduction.

Honestly, I don't think any of the issues you mentioned will be solved in a few days with updates. You'll either find market apps that do what you want, or return the phone.

- I'm fairly positive that Gmail uses push by default, I remember going over this back in 2009 with the OG Droid.

- Factory email has been working just fine for me so far. Although, I did notice the reppear and dissapear problem on the OG Droid.

- Volume on speakerphone is questionable, I can't think of the app right now, but I think there was one that could override the max setting (similar to how VLC player on your computer can up to 400%).

- Email, contacts, and calendar all sync fine for my work exchange account.

-Not sure why you can't check boxes and delete in batches? More explanation maybe

- Pinch/Zoom worked in Email app, but not in Gmail, not sure if it has to do with email format (HTML, Rich Text, etc.)

- Facebook/Google disagree.

Ok let me say it like this, I set up hotmail in the stock email client and it pushes the mail to me. You may be right about the outlook not pushing, I really don't even remember setting it up...

As far as the camera comment go I will stand by what I said and I'll add that if you want to edit a photo the best way to do it is with the proper software on a computer. I'll also argue the fact that the iphone camera isn't better than most point and shoots ;)

Anyway, it sucks the phone isn't working out for you and I hope you find what you're looking for.

factory mail client is not the gmail app. gmail is fine.

exchange is not pop3 of coarse you will not have that issue silly, that's the point of exchange (well that and security)

When I said Batch I mean you can't do a "select all" "delete all" i have to click on all the emails. I get over 100 a day easy, so this is not fun.

HTML in stock client will pinch up, but not down to fit page.

Just showing that the stock email app does have an option to push mail.

I've always hated that you can't bulk delete emails in gmail, the work around for me is going to gmail on the web.

I agree the "it's a phone first" comment in defense of a bad camera is lame.
It was a valid comment when phones first started coming with cameras but there is no excuse for a bad camera on an expensive phone now.

Saying it's a phone first a bad camera is ok is like saying it's a phone first not being able to acess the internet is not a problem, just use your PC.

Seems to me that this phone was big dud. Whats the point in having the phone if you can't get a good signal and the phone dies after 3-5 hours of use. Im glad I waited to see the reviews and not running out to buy the phone. I do hope everything gets fixed for those who plan to keep the phone.

I disagree that it's a dud, but it has it's problems like every other electronic device.
I get a great signal. Today was my first day in the office since buying it. I never get a good signal in my office, but this phone had 4G most of the day.

POP protocol doesn't allow for a push setup.

He has to be using IMAP or something else. IRREGARDLESS, dubbin' has proven that there is is a PUSH setting in the email client.:D:D

Pop does have push, gmail is push...

secondly hijack some other thread. If you have some helpful comments great, if not keep the HE TOLD YOU crap elsewhere.

Thanks

I am getting 12+ hours on battery. I am astounded by the battery life on this phone. And phone signal is great for me. Only thing is I only get 1 bar 4G in my house, but everywhere else has been 2+ bars of 4g. Had a few 4g drops, but that's fine with me - they are working on a fix for the signal.

Gmail isn't POP, it's IMAP.

POP doesn't have a push functionality, you have to manually check messages on a fixed interval, or you can manually fetch. But no push.

IMAP and MAPI (Exchange) have push protocols.

Honestly, I've never used the stock email client, so can't comment on if it actually supports something, so just assuming that you know what you are doing. Assuming it doesn't work as intended, there are other apps available that probably would work to your liking.

But I think you'd do a lot better by moving all you emails into Gmail. Have gmail download messages for other accounts. That way you centralize all your emails, have them available 24/7 from any computer or phone without having to worry about syncing, and most importantly, don't have to deal with multiple email programs and accounts to keep things strait.

Lots of confusion here.

POP doesn't push, it polls.

However - on many Android phones, Google would send a message via Gtalk (Talk client) when new mail was available, and that would trigger a Gmail/POP poll and mail would appear instantaneously - just like push email.

Google has changed its POP/IMAP setup over time, and has changed often how it does things under the hood.

Rather than get into POP vs. IMAP vs. push vs not-push - let's think of the end game.

Gmail is designed, using methods Google deems suitable (and subject to change), to get mail to users in as near real time as possible.

Personally, in the final analysis, I don't think any of us care HOW they do it - just that they do it.

As mentioned earlier - Gmail is a great client, but it's not compatible with everything and doesn't have all the features. I promise from doing my thing covering lots of forums that for any given phone, people are showing this or that mail system working perfectly - or really not. Because there are so many versions of other email systems and how they are administered - and I'm looking at you, Exchange mail.

If in doubt, I agree, no need for all the eggs in one basket, K-9 mail is a great alternate client to try out.

I hope that I'm sure that like the OP, the other issues listed will worked out in time. :)
