Help camera takes terrible pics......

Took this picture an hour ago in our garage. Was horrified by the results. This was with no zoom. The garage isn't all THAT dark.

"edit"
"large pic of red ferreri"

this is the same results I see with my nexus... this is about the same results I saw with my motorola e815 flip phone. in 2004/5

funny thing is i had much better pics with my nexus s

also the quality in live mode seems really good compared to what get saved... so I wonder if it is a software issue?

i get good enough pics and at least it focuses my og droids camera didn't even work for like 4 months or more.

There's an awful lot of user error involved for someone to say the camera just "sucks". The camera is better than the iPhone 4 camera and people raved about that thing. I have had the Nexus One, Droid Incredible, Droid X, Thunderbolt, Droid X2, Droid Bionic, Droid Razr, Rezound, and the Galaxy Nexus so far. The Galaxy Nexus takes much better(not slightly better, much better) photos than all of them but the Rezound.

People need to learn how to take pictures; there is an understanding and skill involved in getting the perfect shot. There is much more to it than just holding the phone in a general direction and randomly hitting a button. The default settings may or may not be ideal for the lighting and movement conditions you are currently in. Default settings of different phones may not be good for the same types of pictures. Don't bother ever zooming in on a camera that uses digital zoom.

Do you have any sample pics from the nexus that you can share with us?

ok so here are some pix i took.. the last one is like 3 feet away from my friend and in PERFECT lighting and it is the only acceptable pick i took..

That lighting is FAR from perfect when it comes to photography standards. Just because you're in a brightly lit room does not mean the lighting is perfect.

Took this picture an hour ago in our garage. Was horrified by the results. This was with no zoom. The garage isn't all THAT dark.

I hope you don't expect better than that when taking a picture in a garage, its darker than you think. If you would have adjusted the exposure it would have turned out better.

Most people are not understanding that these phones do not automatically adjust for the lighting around them like most point and shoot cameras will.

Everyone needs to stop complaining about how the pictures look until you learn how to take a picture. The GN will take excellent photos when used properly.

Keep in mind that iphone makes one model of phone, so of course if the market is about 50% iphone and 50%android youre going to see apple at the top, there are hundreds of android phones nowadays, flickr doesnt put android in its own category. I do admit iphone cameras are better, but HTC is no slouch...but the nexus camera will do fine for me, though my results seem to be better than a majority I see on here.

a select few

All these are extremely nice, why is there such a difference between these and that picture of the Ferrari in the garage? Looks like two totally different cameras

Note the focus distance in some of the bad ones with exif data still intact:

Camera Maker: Samsung
Camera Model: Galaxy Nexus
Image Date: 2011-12-20 16:34:55 (no TZ)
Focal Length: 3.4mm
Digital Zoom: 1.000x
Focus Distance: 0m
Aperture: f/2.8
Exposure Time: 0.059 s (1/17)
ISO equiv: 640
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Center Weight
Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)
White Balance: Auto
Light Source: Incandescent
Flash Fired: No
Color Space: sRGB
GPS Coordinate: undefined, undefined

does this scream no focus was used, or is that just left out? I haven't tried any of mine yet, and they turn out sharp in lower light situations.

im an idiot...all shots register with a 3.4mm focal length because thats what the lens is.

Yes, but that argument has gotten much much weaker since the release of the iPhone 4. If you go to professional photography forums (which I do) you know that many photographers are stating to prefer the camera phones vs there actual cameras because of the convinence of having it. It is also widely agreed that there are really no sub $400 cameras that are worth having over a iPhone 4 camera or the newer samsungs because the quality is 95% of that of those cameras along with the added portability.

Yes, once you get above that price range then the cameras do pretty much crush camera phones but for what we are taking pictures of ourselves there is no need. We just want a quality camera.

As the nexus is my first Samsung phone I am extremely disappointed in the camera on it. All I have been reading over the last 6-8 months is that all the samsung phones have better cameras than the iPhone 4 and 4s, so far all I am hearing is people saying don't expect a good camera on a cell phone. That is 100% false now...still love the phone but I would hate to have to start carrying around my xsi again for pics ;)

Wow, the OP complains about low image quality at dim light, far distance with digital zoom? Even iPhone4S won't get that very good. Also a lot of times it depends a lot on user for focusing and exposure setting. It just amazes me that some people make very unrealistic expectation on phone cameras. It's miles better than old phones, but still it can't compete with even sub $400 P&S in quality and functions. You can get cams like Canon S95, SX230, Panasonic LX5, Sony HX9V well under $400 and believe me they will blow even iPhone4S far away.

I was going to say the same thing. People dont know how to take a pic so they conplain if the phone doesnt do it for them..

The Nexus camera is clearly inferior to the Iphone 4 camera, much less the Iphone 4S camera. Anyone that has used both and still claims the Nexus is on par is blinded by their android fanboyism or literally blind.

Google totally screwed up on the camera sensor, period. They should have stuck with the 8mp sensor in the Galaxy S II. IMO, they wanted a gimmicky "zero shutter lag" feature and compromised WAY too much quality to get there.

Don't get me wrong, I still love the phone, but the camera is a major disappointment.

Sure, if you don't take the time to adjust settings. If you do, this camera takes great photos.

Ok, so every time I want to take a photo I need to guage the available light, find something to brace the camera on, etc, etc? Strange that I didn't have to do that on my friends Iphone 4 to produce great photos.

If I have time to "adjust settings" I'll use my point and shoot. I want quick no fuss pictures that turn out pretty good from my camera. The iphone is able to deliver that, the Nexus is not.

Again, the rest of the advantages far outweigh an iphone, but it seems to me that Google missed on the camera.

And we respect your opine. However trying to rule this as a fact for everyone does not bode well, since many others would completely disagree with you.

Carry on, you should get an iphone instead. Or someone should throw up that link of the review where the SGN beats the fruit! That would be more productive. :D:D

Yes in that aspect it has. The nexus is great because of ICS, which will start to be on many phones soon. Take it back and get a rezound or just wait for some dedicated ICS phones to be out soon if its that big of an issue. I for one am fine giving up a little quality to be able to catch the moment (something my X was so slow I was always missing shots).

Well, that's fine, but when your pictures turn out awful, it is user error.
