Help How to and when to use NFC?

Probably stupid question, but now that we have a solution on the Nexus Verizon to install Google Wallet, I was wondering how to use it?
When I go to store what should I see at the register in order to use NFC? Do I need to open NFC app on my phone in order for this thing to work, and then bump phone on the "card reader" at the register?

What are other uses of the NFC besides payment in the store?

Thanks.

For Google Wallet:

Tap phone against card reader (should have PayPass symbol for compatibility). If you haven't used Wallet in a while it prompts you for your 4-digit PIN. You type it in and then bump the phone against the reader again. If you have used the app recently, you just bump the phone against the reader and it pays.

No need for interaction before the initial bump though.

Here are other uses for NFC as per other threads:

So no need for me to open or have Google Wallet app open? NFC will recognize that I want to pay when I bump the phone on the register with the PayPass sign? Does it mean that phone can even be in locked sleep mode, or do I need to at least unlock the phone?

I used it today. When I opened Google Wallet it had a tutorial at the very bottom. You do not have to have Google Wallet open. I did not come into physical contact with the machine (at McDonald's) but I had to tell the lady I was paying with credit.

Worked like a charm. THANKS FOR BREAKFAST GOOGLE!

I think I got it. Thanks.

What other NFC uses are there besides payment? Can NFC scan those cheap like AMEX cards? Any other uses?
Check the two threads posted near the top.

In Japan, they are used everywhere. Like if you walk into a store, they would have a tag on a sign that you tap to check in or open a webpage with their store information, etc.
