Galaxy Nexus Battery Life

Second day on the extended battery here.

1% discharging (yes, about to die!)
9h 41m on battery
Screen: 43%, Time on 2h 03m (brightness set to auto)
Andriod OS: 26%, Keep awake 4h 18m

I'm hoping Google will roll out an update that will make this thing more efficient. I love this phone, but I'm not real thrilled with the battery life so far.

Edit: ...and it just shut down!

ouch, mines been on for 9h 41m 50s, 21 percent discharging

screen 43% 1h 9m 27s
android os 26% cpu total 55m42s and awake 2h 25m 17s
voice calls 10m 47s

my day was, alarm went off, i hit snooze and unplugged/replugged my phone in (noticed that if it hits 100% during the night, it doesn't stay there, it slowly starts discharging throughout the night and by morning its at 97 or 98% even though its plugged in) got it back to 100 percent and unplugged it.

3g+wifi at home while i showered and ate breakfast etc, turned wifi off and drove to work, 1 hour drive hopping towers on the way up to work. about 2/3 way to work i get 4g so i was on 4g and still am. brightness has gone from half to auto and i've toggled it a few times so can't be exact on that front. downloaded google wallet and set it up. did a bit of texting and browsed a bit etc. android os is definitely draining battery as high awake times show. glad mine isn't as bad as yours. Also i'm on the standard battery.

Edit: just realized how ironic it is that i was at 9h 41m and so were you lol, screenshot below to show timing and proof

Potential solution for battery issue

Found this thread on Reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/njwcp/potential_solution_to_galaxy_nexus_battery_issue/

Under Location Services, uncheck Google's location services, and Location & Google search, (I also have GPS unchecked, but I don't believe that this is related) HERE is what it should look like. After you are done that, shut down the device, then remove the battery, give it a second, put the battery back in, and start up again, then report back here with your results.

Two questions for everyone...

1. The thing that is using the most power on my Nexus is the Android OS. I go to the apps and stop them from running but the OS is still running high. Any idea on how to fix this?

2. My standard battery died. I got lil over 5 hours out of it. When I plugged it in the charger it starts out by saying charging at 53%. Any idea why that would happen?

I would appreciate the help. Thanks!

Are you sure your phone didn't crash? Today around 51%, my phone just shut off. Had to hold power to power on. Weird one.

A guy on another forum said it was a bug with google talk that activated the camera, and that the camera was causing the OS not to sleep... he said he rebooted his phone and force closed the camera and it let his phone sleep...i tried this.. desperate to see if it would work for me.. before i tried, the battery indicator said android OS at 40 something percent then i tried it and it dropped the android OS down to 15% and now im getting decent batery life..at 8 hours i have 62 percent...i hope this helps someone

Hmm, gonna give this a shot. Could be why I see such amazing battery life seemingly every other charge (approx. how often I use the camera).

Interesting. I'm going to give this a go, as well. I also turned off "Google location services" to see if that does anything.

Thanks for the heads up.

For those having terrible battery life please try this.

Charge your phone with it off completely and then turn it back on, I suspect the OS has a terrible problem with reporting inaccurate status. I know it can be hard to find time to do this, but I think you will find a DRASTIC improvement if you do. My phone is registering ~30-50% more than the battery is actually at I'm pretty sure.

I did this last night and saw a significant improvement today. Only 90 minutes screen time but up for 12 hours with 33% left on the battery. The OS is still eating up more than it should but this can only get better with future patches.

Hey, how do you "force close the camera?

Does anyone elses camera icon in the default spot on the home page, disappear when the phone is turned off and back on? Mine has done this a few times when I've restarted the phone. I go to the apps and replace it.

First day with extended battery on first full charge and using the phone as normally would with my DX in past minus pre-release days of Gnex due to constant online refreshing. I am seeing pretty similar results as with the extended with DX.

Granted I may not be glued to my phone like some but do hop on it throughout the day to do what I need to do and get off it. I don't take it off 4g to go on wifi or 3g only. I just use the phone for my purposes and don't play games or try to use as a laptop replacement as I have a very nice laptop I just got as well. The below pic is what I got with standard battery.

I don't know maybe some are just glued to their phone more as I really have no complaints on battery based on my use. Maybe some are having issues. For those that are having issues I think that they will iron them out or maybe you should exchange for another Gnex and see if it helps. If still issues move on or wait for a fix. Just my .02.

Go to settings...then apps....then select all.... go down to camera and press force stop.. it incresed my battery life drastically..

Not sure what people are doing with their phones or if there are a batch of bad batteries but I typically get > 12 hours and still have 30% left when I get home. One odd thing I did notice is if I have gps on and plug the phone in to recharge overnight, in the morning it reads 99% and never goes to 100% unless I reboot the phone and let it sit on the charger for a minute. It doesn't seem to happen if you leave gps off.

There is DEFFINITELY a bug that is causing bad battery life. I factory reset my phone last night, turned off all mobile data, nfc, touch sounds, screen lock sound, and removed all widgets. I didnt download any apps either. Im attaching a screenshot i took after i woke up today.
Something kept my phone awake two times while i was asleep.

That's pretty odd to me. Here's my phone left on overnight with WiFi enabled (as you can see stayed on in the bar at the bottom) and mail/weather services updating every hour or so:

I think that was the 2nd night I owned it. Totally stock/unrooted.

I like to report, I'm getting great battery life. Just checked 18 hours on battery and at 32%.
I got my phone on Saturday (early). Phone is un-rooted and no changes were made to increase battery life. I do have the extended battery; got it for half price at Verizon. The battery life was REAL bad on Saturday and Sunday. I got over 10 hours, maybe 14 hours on Monday. It seems that over time the battery life increases.

is there a way to make the camera not autoload? or maybe disable the stock camera app and buy a camera app?

I see, thanks, I didn't see it in the downloaded tab, but see it in the all tab.

So what exactly does 'force stop' do? It doesn't remove it or anything. Just stops it running in the background? It will start up when you press it again?

Are there settings for each app to define when it stops working?

(I am new to android)

Thanks!

Just wanted to add my update this morning.

I removed the following:
- Facebook
- Twitter
- Disabled Sync all together

I flashed the new leaked CDMA radios last night.

I powered my phone off last night and fully charged it while it was off (extended battery)

Here are my results this morning. About 2 hours on 3G and the rest on Wifi. I haven't really used it except to check the battery and signal strength. Probably 10 mins of screen on time.

STIGY TEST RESULT

Here are the results from last night's run:
- Setup as specified by Stigy
- GMail and LightFlow were running
- Test run 8:15:00 of basically nothing but what should have been sleep time
- Battery state: At at start of test 71%, at end of test 48%

It seems clear that something is causing Keep Awake, but its not clear what that something is. Hopefully Stigy's crew will nail it.

I can run this again with selected apps closed if that helps.

Are you rooted? If so can you grab the logs specified in this thread? http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus/467668-battery-life-test-android-os.html
