Help Best way to turn off notifications but have phone ring

What is the best and simplest way to turn off all notifications but still have the phone ring? Is there also a way to have messages only from certain contacts cause a notification at this time? An example of wanting this function would be when sleeping.

I use Audiomanager Pro. It lets you set up and save profiles that have settings for each of the sound level controls (Alarm, Media, Alerts, Ringer, System, Voice Call). Then I put an icon for each profile on the screen I have setup for my media. That way I can punch one for all volumes up and one for just alarms. There is a 2x1 equalizer-like widget as well that will let you know where each level is set.

I use an app called Quick Profiles but it doesn't allow the customization of notifications down to the individual contact. I have two profiles: day and night. I also use Light Flow and "sleep" the LED at night.

Are any of you using those apps on the Nexus currently or are you speaking from past experiences?

I use tasker to turn off my notifications at night but it doesn't work on the Nexus. If you look under sound settings, the volume for the ringer and the notifications are the same.
I sent an email to the developer of tasker, he said this is an ICS bug and that's why it won't turn off the notifications only.

I've always used Timeriffic. It has times of the day and days of the week that you can set various notifications and well.. pretty much everything. Brightness, ringer volume, notifications etc. I have it set for sleep that it will only ring the phone at 20% volume and all other notifications are off, brightness set to either low or auto. When I get up the ring volume goes back to 80% and noti on. Oh, you can also set if the phone will vibrate or not too.

I needed it if my kids call in the night but I didn't want my email dinging all night long. Worked for my Eris through my GN. Lots of settings so take your time setting it up.

Same question, are you using it now on the Nexus? Have you checked to see that you notifications are actually off?
Send yourself a text to see if you hear it. I tried timeriffic, it isn't stopping the notifications.

You are indeed correct, the notifications still sound but and an extremely reduced level. It seems everything else works, however. Brightness, ringer volume, etc. Now I'm wondering if it's just the texts or is it email too. BRB gonna try email now. Nope, happens the same with email. Time to email the dev, thanks.

You can't silence one or the other, it's all or nothing.

I noticed this as well. I used AudioManager on my OG and would unlink the ringer and notification sounds (so I could turn down the notifications at night but leave my ringer on just in case). It's not possible with the Nexus. There isn't even an option to unlink them in the AudioManager settings anymore - it's just disappeared. So I solved the problem by going directly into the phone settings, then sound. Under ringtones and notifications where you choose the default tone for each you can choose "silent" as an option. I do that at night for notifications but keep my ringer in tact. It works fine for me.

would turning off SYNC in the that widget that comes on the stock nexus work? the one that you can turn on/off wifi, bluetooth, gps, etc.

have not tried it, but I assume if you are not syncing, your phone would not get any new notifications, hence not play a sound. it would still let phone calls and text messages through becasue those are not data.

Yes that works, but that isn't automated. You will have to remember to do that every night, which can be a pain. That's why they created apps to handle it automatically but for some reason Google decided to eliminate the option.

Yeah, I agree. All week of owning the phone I've remembered to turn off notification sounds, but it's turning it back on in the morning that I seem to forget.

This was frustrating me too. I use Locale and there is a plugin that will turn sync off.

Try an app called BEDSIDE. I use it at night. Lets the phone ring but holds all other notifications. It is free.

I am not surE what's going on but I was worried I was going to be hearing gmail notifications all night but I never hear a one even though the emails are coming in.

It's almost like if the phone is asleep for a certain period of time they are disabled, dunno , but so far I have not had anything wake me up in the middle of the night yet

That is so weird because that seems to be happening to me too. I just tested Timeriffic and it doesn't turn off notifications completely, but I don't hear email at night either. I mean I've been tired lately at night but I can't imagine I sleep that soundly that I wouldn't hear a noti come in since the phone is like 12" from my head.

It works for the most part. But noti and ring volume are tied together in the OS and timeriffic does not yet know how to deal with that. I emailed the devs this morning and they are now aware of the problem, working on a fix. For now we're stuck with ring volume being the same as notification volume unless you go into settings and manually silence them.

I did the same with the developer for tasker, he says it's a bug.
I did let him know that the ringer and notification volumes are together.

Hi all,

This has been bugging me since moving to ICS also, so I wrote an app to work around it! I just published it today. I can't post the link since I'm only new here, but search the market for "ICS Enhanced Volume Control".

It's still a work in progress, but it's fully functional and gives (I believe) a good solution to this issue!
