Help Temporary burn-in on screen from soft buttons

I was trying to figure out why my keyboard has a slight yellowish tint/hue, almost like a gradient when I noticed there is burn-in from the soft buttons!!

I hit my test page:

And when I rotated it, I noticed on the left side of the screen there is a faint darker region which corresponds to where the white parts of the soft buttons are. It seems to slowly fade away, but there is still a definite band left over from the dark part of the soft button region.

Is this something we should worry about becoming more permanent? Like I said, they seem to fade away in about 5-10 seconds, but I'm a bit weary of permanent burn in.

I loaded up your page and I don't even see anyway you could even get the area where the soft buttons are to show up on that background. I also don't see how it could possibly effect your keyboard.

It's simple, just view the page in a browser. Rotate your phone 90 degrees clockwise and keep an eye on the left (bottom) part of the screen after you rotate.

I just noticed the same effect from my home screen, actually. I have a picture of the Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon album cover as my home screen image. When I go from that to the all-gray web page above, I can see the faint outline of the triangle/prism. So it's probably just a minor (and hopefully temporary) artifact of an S/AMOLED (or pentile or the combination of the two) screen.

I think I am going to try my luck tomorrow at a local VZW store here in PA and swap my Nexus for the 2nd time. The yellowish tint/hue on my keyboard is horrible. I took a screen shot and then viewed it on my laptop and the tinting is NOT in the screen shot. I think my store in Folsom, CA must have gotten a batch with bad screens or something.

I think the light moving around is playing tricks on your eyes. These phones have not even been out long enough to cause a burn in the screen unless maybe just maybe you left the screen on the whole time you had it. Even then I don't its enough time to burn it.

It took about a year for my Incredible to start getting image burn in it's OLED screen. I'm hoping Samsung has improved the life of the displays a bit since then.

burnin is probably the wrong term. I don't think it's burnin, just a ghosting left over for a brief period. It is definitely there.

Gah, why does EVERY thread about a screen issue get met with "nope, not here"? WTF is there THAT much parity with these displays?

I don't know how AMOLED technology is different, but on my old LCD monitor, it would get burn in after a couple minutes but only on the higher brightness levels.

Dude, you are reaching a near OCD level with your screen, man!!! I wish you could just enjoy the beauty of it rather than focus on the negatives. Know what I'm saying?

Anyway, I wasn't able to duplicate the issue you're having, but your thread title is a bit alarmist. At most, you're experiencing image retention, not burn-in, at least not yet. Maybe a question mark at the end of the title would be more appropriate.

I'm guessing you're making like Don Quiote and tilting at windmills. Put simply, nobody else is having the screen issues you bring up because your intense hunt for "defects" in the display is leading you to "discover" some "problems" that arent really there.

I completely admit to being OCD with techie things. I just dropped $300 for the damn thing, I want it to be perfect All kidding aside, this is just something I happened to notice.

I was told by a few folks on irc (not #androidforums) that this kind of temporary ghosting is completely normal for AMOLED.

Many of the things I'm noticing are probably due to me going from SLCD to AMOLED I guess. I do love how well it is visible in sunlight, btw.

I already asked the mods to change it to include "temporary". In fact, right after I posted the thread when I noticed it did the same thing with my home screen -> gray screen transition and that it faded quickly.

jkc120, just wanted to let you know that I was able to finally duplicate the issue. And, I must say, I was surprised at how much retention there was. But, eventually, it did fade away.

I couldn't get it to work the first time around because I was rotating counter-clockwise rather than clockwise....duh.

Ahh the trick was to turn it clockwise!!! Yeah I see it now but dude you need to stop looking so hard at this stuff. Most TV's do the exact same thing when turning them off

It is called image retention jkc. I don't have it on my GN on your test site. Use a gray screen and it should show up even more if you have it.

Yes amoleds will get retention and yes they will get screen burn in. I've seen it on several phones, mostly on the fascinate and the captivate. Higher brightness will cause this to happen quicker along with bright whites. Plasma is similar

Notice how ICS on the GN has a blue clock, blue signal, blue wifi and all gray notification icons? Also notice, for example, if you use weather bugs temp notification in top left corner (or any other app that places a noti here) I can choose white for the color. However, when displayed it is dimmed, and is not white. It is white on my 2 Incs.

I believe these steps were taken to reduce image retention. However, that is just a guess

wow. interesting. Not sure that everyone isn't going to have this. That area has such a significant contrast disparity that it really isn't any surprise that you can see it.

My advice....don't look at solid gray screens

Regarding the yellow-ish hue I see in the keyboard (while we're speaking of my screen OCD), someone on irc also mentioned this does happen on AMOLED screens and that it fades over time and will normalize. It was suggested I turn the brightness up and do something to display a full screen of white, which I'm doing and will leave it on there for a while and then see if the yellow-ish tint is gone from my keyboard.

It was blue OLEDs, but that was a first gen issue (AMOLED) seen in pre-Galaxy S Samsung models and HTC models, including the Nexus One. Super AMOLED was thought to bring an improved blue OLED, and possibly again with Super AMOLED Plus, so I think things have improved quite a bit over the image retention issues seen with the 2 year old technology.

hahaha sorry! I think it's both a blessing and a curse at the same time. It helps in my job to be observant of little details and notice differences, etc. But boy does it suck when you find something on a phone/tv/whatever and then you can't unsee it!

BTW, I've noticed this effect when going from my home screen to the market. I wonder if the banding people claim is so profound in the market screen isn't because their wallpaper has bands/lines. It seems to be quite temporary, so perhaps some of the reports of bad banding is related...

i can make jkc120 sleepless.
every AMOLED have some sort of dark spots.
put black color as background, and watch it in dark environment (like covering it and you with blanket)..

u can see dark spots like this.

its noticable if its huge and in the middle while watching movies.
luckily for me, i have small dots in corner.
