Root ROM Development Rant

So I got bored the last couple of days and while I originally set out to try and figure out kernel development, I discovered that most of the guides out there to get beginners starting in developing or compiling kernels were too outdated to use. Having installed linux and gotten all my dev tools set up, I wasnt going to allow all that time to go to waste.

So I started doing a little tinkering on ROMS... started out removing bloat, then adding things like quick settings and hacked hotspot, ect. Flashed em and they worked just fine.

However, problem with that is with being rooted we can all do that without opening up the terminal. So I decided to try to port the stock 3VO rom and going from there... Its currently not booting :D(I learned to always make sure your port boots before spending lots of time customizing it...DOH) but I've enjoyed the challenge so far and will continue to try to figure this out.

I don't expect it to end up as a daily driver for anyone or anything like that, but we'll see where this goes over my winter break from classes.

That right there is something an expert would would say. I bet you can do it and im looking forward to trying it when you are ready. The 3.0 roms never seemed to get the attention they deserve. keep us posted.

Also on this topic while I figure out how to get this damn thing to boot.....;)

Anyone know where the language files are that devs are always removing? I think the ROM might just be running out of space. Gotta find some ways to trim the fat.

Stop over the mikmik and ask someone over there, even aamikam. I've pm'd him in the past and he's always responded. Might get you the answer you need. :)

I PM'd gruesomewolf over at XDA....Maybe I'll try mik too.

Is there minimum post count required to PM people? I feel like my PM's never get replied to over there and theres nothing in my sent box after I send.....I have 0 posts:eek:

I don't think there is any kind of minimum, I've PMed folks...Most of the forums have saving sent messages off, you need to turn them on.

So with themikmik, go to your inbox, then on the left under "General Settings," scroll under "Messaging & Notification" --> "Sent Private Messages" to toggle that setting on.

And over at xda, it's under "Private Messages" (top right) --> "Settings & Options" (left) --> "edit options" --> scroll down to "Messaging & Notification" --> "Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default"

Miks only advice was to not port.... I was hoping for something a little more insightful :D.

So my choices now are to keep working with the stock EVO ROM because I know that boots, or maybe get a booting base 3VO somewhere.

Hmm.... I wonder if I can use the port settings in the kitchen to port the settings from mik3D to the stock 3VO? Granite, that'd probably be considered stealing .

Hmm.... going to the dev cave... this little laptop can only do so much at a time.

I know this is a bit off topic, and I could have sworn I had it either bookmarked or saved somewhere, but I cannot find it...

Does anyone have the link to the themeing guide? I wanna say this one was on AF and not XDA... I figured I do some themes before venturing too far into rom building.

Good links by the way (from post 6)!

Granite would be the one to chat with about that I believe he has the one from here in his sig.

Argh, I have that bookmarked..... but its on my windows partition and not the linux one I'm using to get this going.

The ROMS still not booting, but i've diched the kitchen and am doing everything by hand. Learning a lot more this way.

My Hats off to ya bro. I know how difficult it can be to program. I did a little bit of VB back in the day and I can remember nights sitting at the comp just trying to debug. Hours of hair pulling getting mad chunking computers 40 feet in the air just to watch them smash on the ground. Oh wait that last part only happend in my head. Never could bring myself to actually physically damage my baby girl. Which the laptop i'm using now has 5x the amount of power she had. Heck think my EVO has more power than she had lol :p:D

JK OCN!! :p:D

I have used the ultimate themeing guide found here:
https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AcdxIJRSH9ypZGZzc2pxNDlfMjdnazk4OHNxZA&hl=en

Also The Impalers guide to themeing found here:
[GUIDE] Want to learn how to theme? - xda-developers

I know enough about themeing to make me extremely dangerous, so be careful what you ask / wish for!! :D

Use google chrome in both windows and linux partitions and it will sync your bookmarks between each setup. tis what i do.

Were you just recently made a guide? If so, Congrats man!

Honestly, I never really noticed if you weren't. You've been so helpful I guess I assumed you had always been one.

In other news..... I think Im getting close here. I'm pretty sure I've got all the updater scripts and boot stuff figured out and I just need to get this mammoth thing down to size (literally about cut it in half :D sounds easy enough right?) so it will boot.

gruesomewolf has been amazing at helping me through this. All these language files are in each individual .apk. This is gonna be fun
