[Verizon] Uprgrade to 4.03 without Wiping

Is there a way on to upgrade to 4.03 without erasing data and cache? I have rooted and I know I can back everything up and reload, but I would rather not have to do that if possing. Since the OTA update works without erasing the phone, I would imagine it has to be possible to run that update without erasing everything.

Not to my knowledge. Unless you wait for the OTA. You can always restore the data partition using clockworkmod recovery or Titanium Backup, though.

What do you mean upgrade to 4.0.3? There is no such thing yet other than some incomplete roms out there with incomplete code. I would hardly call those an upgrade.

I've always wondered how OTA updates don't have to wipe your phone but upgrading from one rom version to another you do. Ex: ota upgrade from froyo to GB doesn't wipe phones but upgrading CM6 to CM7 you do have to wipe.

I would assume the OTA is coded to backup and restore the partitions when it is pushed unlike roms which may or may not be coded to wipe partitions but I don't think there are any that will auto restore or if it is possible.

You don't have to always wipe a rom when the dev releases an update. I used to flash Liquid's nightlies without it wiping. Am I getting the question wrong?

As an aside, I'm simply not getting the breakup of the forum to GN and VGN separately. Would someone please explain the differences? To me it just makes my experience more laborious.

The wiping thing is because ROM devs get sick of the "I'm having -insert problem here-" when it turns out that the person didn't wipe coming from a previous devs ROM, so they advise to wipe whenever you upgrade. I also know that some devs will change the "base" of the ROM and that can present problems if you don't wipe.

As for the GN and VGN seperation I agree with you. The way they explained it, it was because the two phones are different and people were getting confussed when someone with the LTE GNex would answer questions for someone with the GSM GNex and vice versa.

This way it's making the forum extremely difficult to navigate, imo. Mods, if you're reading this do you think you can start this all over, merge the forums and only have 2 places to look, main and root?

Usually wipes are required when the dev changes bases so going from a base of 4.0.2 to 4.0.3 will more than likely require a wipe to prevent issues. Often with nighlies there may be very little change from one to the next unlike full release of a rom as well. IIRC Liquid includes in his rom.zip the commands to wipe /system before rewriting it as well.

There are many ideas about how this should be handled by many different poeple. I personally would like to see seperate forums like you have posted, just like the forums available for the SGSII variants. Really what it comes down to is Rob, he is the site owner and will make the final decision. I think he wanted to see if this style would work before making the 2 device forums since the only difference is the radios.
