How many GNs have you gone through and were your subsequent devices any better than the previous ones?

I'm on #2 and signal reception is marginally better, but not by much and still unacceptable to me. I will try #2 device for a week and might exchange it for another one if it does not improve to my satisfaction.

Until there is an update you will not see an improvement in reception. All you're doing is wasting time and a good device by trading them in for another.

Same one from release day.

It's actually a bit better than the Charge or Bionic that I had. either of those on the recent software (liek the bionic), i had to flip airplane mode several times a day.

I think I have done it twice on the SGN and those were during the outage. I'm also getting much better speedtest results :D:D

Leads me to suspect it's not specifically the hardware, but maybe a market/location issue that people are reporting. I'm not discounting that people have problems, just saying that it's working great for me!

edit: also, of those having problems, be sure to call VZW and let them know!!!!!!!!! Otherwise big red won't have the info you are posting here!

Time I've got, if it was a good device I wouldn't need to exchange it. So I don't really care if the problem is with the phone or verizon's signal or Google's OS, someone needs to fix something. And I'm not just talking about trying to fool me by manipulating the signal bars. Like I said, I'll keep exchanging it till I'm satisfied with what I paid for (phone+monthly service) and will be stuck with for 2 more years.

Still a waist of time returning them when NOTHING is going to change until an update. You also should understand how manipulating the signal bars really works. Its going to change things for the better.

Wow! You should buy another older more robust droid.

So is VZW sending you certified new ones or are you nag hagging the local store?

I'm curious as to the troubleshooting steps through VZW that you have gone through.

Also, unless defective, you get 1 exchange. How are you getting around that? So many unanswered questions!:D

I stopped by a VZW Corp store today.

I wanted to compare signal strength etc(I know I've read the AnandTech article).

The phones on the table I went up to were the Rezound, Charge, Bionic, Stratosphere, and a GN. The signal strength was in that order from best to worst. The GN on 4.0.2 had the exact signal strength as mine on 4.0.3. The white and black Razrs did not have a charged battery and were useless.

People have stated that when the Charge come out the signal strength was not very good. If that is the case then they have improved it since its launch. How long did that take?

Costco! No questions asked really, just switched to a new one. I bought from them due to their excellent return and exchange policy, and in anticipation that a new release might have issues. I tried to trouble shoot the problem with verizon's tech support before I exchanged the phone, but they even told me to exchange it for a new one.

There is a thread in here where someone went to a VZW store and did a test, they took down all of the signal strength readings and then did a speed test with each phone.

They found that while the GNex had a weaker reading it had a better speed test score. So as has been stated the signal strength is not reading right, those other phones are reporting better signal because they are using the 3G signal and NOT the LTE one.

I'm on my second Nexus, but my return had nothing to do with signal. My first one had a problem with the microphone cutting out.

As others have said, comparing signal at a store won't do any good unless you are comparing to another Nexus. I think all the other phones will only show you CDMA signal strength and not LTE signal strength. Since CDMA is more prevalent it will always show better than LTE. Now, if you switch to CDMA only and do a test you should see very similar results.

As far as returning your device over and over because of your signal, you're not going to get anything different. At best you may get one right when the update comes out. At worst, the store you are going to will get sick of you returning phones and you will end up getting stuck with one that has a real problem.

Well my test is not being conducted in the store, it's being tested at home, at work, and on the road - your typical daily use of a cell phone and the signal is unstable. Taking the phone to a verizon store is kind of like taking your new car into the dealership for warranty work, you know something is wrong with the car but the dealer is telling you they found nothing wrong with it or that's the way the car should behave.

I'm on my second. The first one clicked in and out when pushed on the back by the sim card. The csr told me that's the way the phone was designed. I asked to see another and he refused. Went home, checked with IRC buds and no one had the problem. Called vzw, noted I needed new phone, went back to store and got one. Flawless so far.

What kind of problem did you have with the mic ? I've had a couple of calls now where I'll be talking to someone and all the sudden they can't hear me but I can hear them. Both times happened when I was on the speaker phone. I tried turning the speaker phone off but that did not help. I'm wondering if this is an issue with my phone ?

I had the exact same problem. Mic would cut out after about 10 or 15 minutes.
