Hey all first off happy christmas to you all :) well I seem.to have this dreaded red triangle when trying to install Android v 2.3... yesterday my phone said that the new updat 2.3 was available for dl so happily I downloaded it but everytime I try my phone shuts down as normal then starts the install but when the green bar is about a third of the way across it stop and the red triangle appears.. I have tried hitting the volume key and power button method but same problem.. I even deleted lots of apps etc.. off my phone to allow for more memory.. so any ideas what the issue is? as this is an official download I thought my phone would just install with no issues.. :(

Unless I'm imagining the last 6 months or so HTC didn't actually push 2.3 out to Desire users - if you wanted it you had to download a RUU (installer, basically) from the HTC Developers website and install that, which completely wiped your phone - it didn't happen over the air.

Prior to this HTC pushed out an OTA update for 2.2 which failed (red triangle) if your handset was debranded - that's debranded via the goldcard method, not unbranded as handsets sold sim free are. It could be that your handset has been debranded either by you or a previous owner and as a result the update has failed.

Why not download the 2.3 RUU and install that, after backing up all your data & settings? Or, alternatively, go down the rooting and custom ROM route.

Same thing just happened to me. I have done updates when invited to do so from time to time with no problem.

Anyway I found a red triangle thread on another forum from August 2010. The solution was to press + volume & on/off switch.

That took me to a screen of small text, saying amongst other stuff which meant nothing to me that the update had failed.

Using + & - to navigate the options. I chose "reboot" from the top of the list & clicked on/off.

It rebooted as if nothing had happened.

So should I try updating again? Have others updated satisfactorily? I was quite happy before updating, so for the moment I think I'll side step an update, unless I'm really missing out on something!

You should certainly read the faq's in the root forum to get an idea what its all about. Mainly itgs about getting more app space. If its just thej latest OS you want, that can be achieved without rooting.

One thing I would say is read, read, read...
Thanks again fir your help :) yea its the OS im interested in updating.. where is the best place to start?
