So when you open the messaging app all your received messages are listed and next to each person is a spot for a picture. Is there an easy way to get that picture to be that person's facebook picture? I've logged into facebook on my phone and told it to sync with my contacts but am i missing something?

Why would you want it to be someone's Facebook picture. Half the idiots I know on Facebook change their pictures every two days and usually put up pictures of monkeys or cartoon characters. When my phone rings, I want to see a familiar face. One I put there. Assign your own photos of people you know using Gmail's contact list (on your computer) and sync. They will remain consistent instead of pulling the latest gag shot from Facebook or Google+. Having my phone ring while meeting with my boss and having my buddy's latest shot of himself dressed as a transvestite for Halloween showing on the screen doesn't usually go over well.

This is great for you...but maybe not for others, thus why he asked the question

To each their own. Lets all try and respect that and give pertinent, honest answers for the sake of the community

Okay, then... the only way for you to be sure that only certain people get facebook avatars... is to download them all yourself... and assign them to your gmail account manually to override the use of people's existing avatars. Even then, if people have avatars assigned in Google accounts it's going to sync something whether you want it to or not. Then, every time they change them, you can repeat that process manually. Hope that helps.

I rarely visit FB and never use auto sync for FB however I've manually sync'd and as long as you don't have a pic in your google contact the FB pic will be the avatar shown. You only have to make sure that you *join* the FB contact with your google if it didn't do it by itself. Just make sure you don't have two contacts for the same person otherwise the contact's avatar with the matching number will be what you see. You'll then always get the FB avatar on a call/text match.
