Root HTCDev.com Unlock - Perm Root - Amon Ra or CWM Recovery

Ya I want to know how it works I don't want to mess up anything does it wipe data or what?

Yes, according to the disclaimer on their website, it will wipe data.

"To prevent unauthorized access to your data, unlocking the bootloader will delete all personal data from your device including applications, text messages and personalized settings."

Just a word of caution guys.

Do this at your own risk. As i understand it maybe a little shaky ground to walk on with Perm Root and S-On. ....aka chances of a brick are higher. I could be wrong on this but i think i read that somewhere.

Also MrSmith you may can answer this question for me as i'm a little out of it with not having the device and just seeing this. When doing this to get Perm Root does it give you the ability to do a nandroid backup? I would think not because an official CWM would have to be made for the RZ correct?

Hooray!

Story here - Though Unlisted, HTC Rezound Unlockable via HTCDev Tools

What's possible? A whole lot - many have used this method for the HTC EVO 3D with the later bootloader version.

You should be able to add recovery - but not every type and every version. Once you have a custom recovery, custom roms and kernels are yours.

This is a very bizarre unlock - it leaves S-ON - but, it works.

I'll hunt around for more details and post back.

Can I download the necessary stuff NOW in case they pull it, but not run through the unlock process yet? I kind of want to wait for S-OFF before I unlock the bootloader (and have to go through the whole backup/restore process), but I don't want to miss out on the unlocked bootloader if they pull it later.

Yup. go through the steps up to where they email you the .bin file. Then you can stop and wait if you like. Just don't accept any OTA's because it might kill your unlock key.

I believe that's correct - koush (the dev) will have to make a CWM specific to this device (or certify that one he has already is).

When fully supported, you should find it in this list -

ClockworkMod ROM Manager - Recoveries

Here's the XDA thread on the progress -

Bootloader unlocked but s-on, from HTCDEV.COM - xda-developers

Pay particular attention to anything posted on XDA (or here) by "scrosler" - that's Scott Crosler, great guy, recognized dev here and at XDA, and a HUGE hTC supporter.

If you like a fast debloated Sense, his rom will be the one to watch for (among others).

Dumb question since I rooted my tbolt long ago, but, I never actually learned what s-off/s-on actually means. I've learned more about it on this short thread than anywhere. Can someone enlighten me on what it means and what it means you can/can't do?

S-ON means that critical things can't be flashed without an encrypted signature on the zip/image file.

To begin with, this means you won't be able to change the h-boot partition, flash radios or kernels.

However - once things start flowing along in the dev community, it's more than likely that some of things will come along with proper signatures - hence my claim above that you'll be able to flash custom kernels.
