Root Help needed updating

Hi All,

I'm looking for some newbie help updating my DHD. I got the phone when they first came out and wanted rid of the bloatware (amazon etc) I rooted using visionary and removed the apps using titanium backup.
As it stands I'm on Android version 2.2 and I would like to update to the latest release.
If I try 'system software updates' I get that triangle with an ! in it, meaning I need to pull the battery.
I am quite a novice when it comes to phones, so please, can you explain any suggestions. Ideally step by step would be great.

If you have changed the recovery image i.e. put ClockworkMod in its place, then you will not be able to use OTA updates.

My advice would be to install Android Revolution HD (Custom ROM) which is the latest release but without the issues as outlined in the sticky on the main forum and tweaks to improve performance beyond standard.

Only other option if you still want to go stock is to flash the latest RUU but IMHO you'll be taking a giant leap backwards. If you still want to go ahead I'll locate your device specific RUU but will need to know if your handset was originally or still is locked to a certain carrier/network.

Android Revolution HD - How is this done? Are there risks involved? and will be able to update to future releases?
go stock - Again, how is this done, and are there any benefits? As the phone was one of the first out of the shops on voda, it was never locked to a network.

If you want as far as option one is concerned I'll put together a non flashable zip you can use that will have all the files and even a step by step guide. Again future releases will have to be downloaded of the actual ROM. ARHD is currently running 6.3.1 and if your inclined to be flashing all the time like me there are regular upgraded releases supplied by the dev who cooked (created) the ROM. Like I say basically stock but with performance tweaks and add-ons. No real downsides and the most likely way you'll see Ice Cream Sandwich implemented properly on your phone.

Staying or reverting to stock...the benefits? Not sure from my perspective I'll find any. Only one is for Warranty purposes. To do so is to find the latest RUU which I can link to for you and is a case of plugging your phone into your PC and running the .exe, then you'll be able to get the buggy official OTA upgrade to Sense 3.0 lol the link for which I can supply if you let me know under MENU>SETTINGS>ABOUT PHONE>SOFTWARE>BUILD NUMBER or you can match it yourself to the RUU links supplied by Xyro here: http://androidforums.com/htc-desire-hd/196270-htc-desire-hd-useful-links-files.html

Ok, sounds like option one is the way forward, I'll pm you with my email address. When I do this, I take it I'll lose my apps, but what about my contacts etc?

No need for the e-mail address I'll put the link up in this thread. I'm at work right now. You'll not lose your apps so long as you back them up with Titanium Backup. (I highly recommend purchasing the pro key for the app to unlock two click batch restore afterward) Ensure your contacts are all changed to Google contacts followed by syncing the Google account. SMS can be backed up using SMS Backup from the market so search that too. Get that done before I pop the link up then you'll be ready to go. Oh and if you haven't done already download ROM Manager from the market and ensure your version of clockworkmod is up to date. (Another app I recommend purchasing for the use you'll get out of it.) Once done backup your current setup as well through ROM Manager which will store an image you can revert to should you encounter problems flashing a Custom ROM.
