Help battery dies quickly- lots of applications running i did not launch

Well a task killer can be used to kill non-system apps. I know that you don't want to use a task killer but if you use it on non-system apps it can save battery. Using a task killer on system apps only makes them restart ans that's how you kill battery. For system apps that you don't use you will have to freeze them, using titanium backup or anttek (I think that's how it's spelled). But you can also try juice defender, works nicely in my opinion.

From my experience, task killers and juice defender only made things worse. I would suggest freezing/uninstalling apps you don't use. Just make sure not to get rid of google talk. Also, turn off wifi & gps when not using them, and adjust the brightness to conserve battery. And if you're running a lot of widgets, you might consider removing some. And last but not least, change update intervals on any apps/widgets that are frequently checking for updates (ie: Facebook, Phandroid, Twitter, etc...).

Oh yeah... You could also try to recalibrate your battery.

i'm on the road/traveling and battery dies quickly quickly. seems there are lots of applications running i never launched that are launching/starting themselves. how can i set up the fone so they don't launch to begin with rather than having to use task killer? thanks.

I remember you,one of the earlier posters here in the ASCEND ASYLUM.

Great to hear from you again! :)

Judging from your posting history(JAN 2011),I'd guess the battery is shot, along w/Canodope's & Awesomepie85's tips on battery life.

As I just posted in another thread here, the phone itself has a one year warranty, not too sure if that same warranty covers the battery or not.

If you have your phone set to automatically sync email accounts, that's one more place where it will use a significant amount of battery, as it checks frequently. Ideally, any app that syncs over the web should be set to manually update if you want to save some battery life. Also, whenever possible, do any syncing/updating of apps when on wifi, as doing so on a data connection uses more battery than doing so over wifi, because it takes longer to do so.

As far as what was mentioned about warranty, I wouldn't be surprised if a standard warranty does not cover the battery for the entire period either. This has been my experience with other electronics such as laptops, where say, a laptop has a 1 year warranty, but the battery itself is only covered for 6 months. My Ascend seems to have gotten worse on battery usage over the last few months as well, and I've had it for nearly a year, so that battery may very well be on its way out. Your only real option is to keep your charger on hand, and if you're in the car a lot, get a car charger. You can get an aftermarket car charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter/power port in your car and has 1-2 USB slots for 10-15 bucks, depending on where you buy it. I find this to be a better solution than a dedicated car charger, because I can use my USB cable with the wall charger, the PC, and in the car, and don't have to buy additional cables.

thanks everyone. i'm only using the fone, messaging, and GPS right now cuz i'm walking around new york city. but apps are automatically launching (uno...wtf? metropcs web, music , etc..)...just makes no sense. i don't have any tech skills to do anything at the root level. thanks. amy

If you have some tech-savvy friends/family,have them root & install ICARUS 1.1,or,CM7,along w/possibly getting a new battery.
It will be like getting a new phone, plus, you'll have even better-than-before battery life w/both of these upgrades.
Just have them read all the stickies in the top of the page for thorough instructions on doing so.
Even I was able to eventually root & install CM7 ( :p ) ,w/help from a lot of good people here, :) & I came from having practically no tech expertise whatsoever. (Not that I'm a tech guru now, just an experienced ANDROID user).
Keep us posted on the course of action you plan on taking & the ensuing results.
Great to have you pop-in here again,HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

GPS is a BIG battery killer, use it as little as possible. It's even worse with MetroPCS if you're stuck with 1x data and not 3G, because it takes even longer to download and update.

With the Ascend, there's very little "skill" involved in it. Follow the instructions in this post:

http://androidforums.com/ascend-all...e-ascend-customization-guide.html#post2582619

You'll be rooted and removing useless apps in no time, I promise. I've followed the instructions in that thread, and I know the guy who posted it, and he took a LOT of time to make it as easy as possible to follow the instructions, as well as making one huge guide for customizing the Ascend. The post I linked is the first post in that thread.

Don't be afraid to try at least rooting the phone, because there's really no way to hurt it. The worst you should end up with is an unsuccessful attempt to root. I would, however, recommend following the second post in the thread as well to install CWM (ClockWorkMod Recovery) which will allow you to make a complete backup of the phone's current state, so that you can restore it just in case something were to go wrong. I believe you can install the recovery without rooting the phone first, so you could technically install it, then create a backup of your phone even before trying to root.

Don't be afraid to ask questions in the All Things Root subforum if you need help with any of this. We've all been n00bs at one time or another, and had to ask for help, so you wouldn't be the first, and definitely won't be the last! The Ascend is virtually unbrickable, and I've yet to see anyone brick the phone if they didn't cause actual physical damage to it.
