To root, you'll need to start from version 0032 of 3.1. You won't be able to root directly if you've loaded 3.2.

This is not completely correct now. You can root the thrive now even if you had installed all the updates that removed fastboot. I just rooted both my units after doing the Toshiba updates without having to roll back to an earlier ROM.

Receiving my factory refurb 10.1 this Fri or Mon. I have been seriously considering rooting it but am not sure it's worth doing. I am mostly interested in performance improvement. I know that rooting many phones provides a significant performance enhancement but have heard no one talk about this aspect for a rooted Thrive. I'm not sure I have a great need for superuser or many of the apps that require root. Or, do I?

The biggest part of rooting the Thrive would be for customization. Many people like to have custom bootloaders, and other ROM's that get rid of the 3GB limit on apps. Others like to overclock, others yet like to underclock... it's all about choice. I know that I'm rooted(I did this a short while ago),a dn have done 2 nandroid backups just to make sure my tablet was always safe.

But like I said, it's all about personal preference. Please note, though, that if you do root, you lose access to google play movies. There are soem other things too, but I'm not sure what they are. Mostly rooting, in my eyes anyeays, is a positive thing, and I would say, if you want to root, go for it. You can always unroot.
