10) Now for fun,
wink.gif
If anything confuses you, Google it.
10B) go to the device manager, and select the unknown HTC device, then update driver. then browse>let me pick from a list>have disk>go to downloaded unzipped folder>choose the appropriate folder for your OS type>click the driver. Now open, next, yes, close. Right click HTC Modem, and go to Properties>Advanced port settings>see what your COM port is

Getting stuck here... 'unknown HTC device'. I have 'My HTC' under 'android devices' and 'HTC Diag' under 'other devices. I assume you mean the latter. But - I don't know where I am supposed to find the driver to update with. The PG76DIAG.rar has a PG76DIAG.zip but it's not a zip format I can open, I assume this just works on the phone. So... am I even trying to update the correct driver? Do I need the PG76DIAG.zip and .nbh on my phone during boot? Which zip has the driver I need?

I'm sorry, this is probably totally obvious to those for whom this works, but it's baffling when you get stuck because the instructions while trying to be detailed really are leaving out thin and that now and then it seems to me

I re-executed the PRL update procedure from step 10 one more time, every step seemed OK, but I got that same error msg in the end.
Found a thread on androidcentral where someone had the same error. He later found his prl was 60681 and I just checked mine - it is 60681 also.

One of the reasons I suspected a speed issue is that skype (audio) was horrible via wifi. Yet download speed test was about 10 Mpps and upload 5 Mbps - more than enough for skype! I then found an old version of skype and that works fine.

So I guess I do not need the PRL mod.

There are a couple of things that could be improved in the tutorial. One valuable addition would be a description of what a mod is supposed to fix. In this case - what is 'slow'? Is there a test? Also how about a note to check for PRL version before even looking at that section... And while I'm at it... custom recovery step 3 states
3) Now move this file to the root of your gold card UNZIPPED
I think it should be un-UNZIPPED, or 'still zipped' or something like that :)

Rom supports ext2. If you want more space, just back up your sd card and partition it in CWM. NOTE THIS WILL DELETE ALL DATA ON CARD IN CWM IF YOU PARTITION. you do not need a 2nd partition to flash this update.
It's a moot point. Same issue - will not boot. Yes formatted everything but /sdcard

Do your ROMs use black 'HTC quietly brilliant' boot screen? I'm hanging on that. I think original default was white screen. Of course that (black BG) sceen also comes up when I boot into hboot and cwm

Are you a VM user, as this rom works fine? i use the black screen too, but my builds dont. you had to have updtaed that in HBOOT. humm, i dont get why other than your not being cdma. everything should work, and it does for my beta tester too who downloaded from the same link

The phone is the silver VM version. New, had it since Xmas. Runs android 2.3.4 Should not need to have the phone activated, I can't imagine why that would...

Im very confused on your problem. Try another download, as it should work. Make sure your soff? and custom recovery is 5+
Me confused2!

Yes S-OFF. CWM 5.0.2.7. Tried multiple downloads - identical. Otherwise I would not be able to unzip (which I did on PC to make sure zip was OK and contens looked fine) I think CWM would also have an issue with a corrupt zip and not report 'installation complete'

Mr. Scubaman:

A few things you may want to consider sir. First: After more than 3 unsuccessful attempts at a mod, revert to stock by what ever means is available at the time ie CWM or Odin (if theres a port for your phone). I know its a pain but it really does pay off. Second: When you do the mandatory preemptive wipe before a mod flash I've found that factory reset does no justice. Go straight for wiping them manually and individually. Third: If theres a patch or hotfix that gives you trouble or you happen to be doing a fresh install including any patches, do them one right after the other with no reboot between. Finally: If all else fails after modding ie bootloop or freeze, wipe the dalvik cache.
Hope this helps!

Im no expert on the Wildfire S, but I am currently modding my friends because of my knowledge and success in modding android tech. I personally have a Boost Mobile Samsung Prevail running CM7 with a2sd.

Thanks btw, SimonSimons- Great rom works fantastic and I look forward to your further work and the options they will provide the android community.

One more thing. After I install the zip, I usually used BACK and the BOOT SYSTEM NOW. And got stuck. If instead I pull the battery, and boot withteh power button, I go back straight into CWM. And if I boot using option 1 I get stuck on the HTC quietly brilliant screen.

I used format for all (except /cdcard) from the mount screen.

How do I go back to strict factory ROM? I see the posted nandroids. If I compare with other CWM backups, the names look a little different - like "cache.yaffs2.img" instead of cache.img, and android_secure as well as sd-ext are .vfat.tar instead of .img.

Nevermind. I tried CWM recovery with these and it worked. I seem to be back to virgin Virgin Mobile - S-OFF though, so I don't have to do tha tpart over at least :)

Did a sanity check that I *CAN* actually flash a ROM. I found insink71_marvelc_signed_120411_130517.zip and flashed it - no problem. Of course I'll restore my backup, but feel a little better that it's not me... only what on earth is the problem?

Not sure this is relevant, but here's what I see in HBOOT
