So I'm on my second phone. The display is actually worst than my last nexus. The problem is the banding that happens. On this phone I get banding plus a purple hue with it. I also noticing this keyboard has major delay problems. Multi touch?.

So my plan is to return this phone and get a refund. I don't like any other phones out right now. Resound is to thick and I don't like the razr . The Droid 4 is too small.

And wow the nexus KB is bad.

Edit:
Try typing a paragraph on the nexus with the default keyboard. It's really slow and laggy. I had to stop using it because the phone was burning up as well.

So as I was trying to say does anyone else or has anyone else experienced similar banding or banding with a purple hue on their phone? Put the phone in auto brightness so its a little darker and then open a web browser and go to settings. With that grey I would see banding across it. It's more noticeable in white background with dimmed brightness. It's hard to see in very bright rooms.

With my second phone now I see banding plus a purple hue.

I just think amoled displays are just too immature to be used. I base that on the fact with phones that have this type of the display it appears that the #1 complaint about the phone is the display.

And don't say this phone isn't for me and blah blah blah that's just stupid. It's a great phone but the display tech is not ready for prime time.

Out of curiousity do you have auto brightness on? I just don't see the banding that you are referring to but I turned off auto brightness the day I got it since it was too agressive. I've got it set at 50% now. Also for the laggy keyboard there was a post on here that fixes it if you just uncheck the spelling correction under language and input. It doesn't even turn off spelling correction so not sure what the setting is for.

Edit: Completely missed the part about you having auto brightness on. I do agree that auto brightness is screwed up and makes the display look like crap. I'm leaving it off until they change the way auto brightness works.

I can't really say I've had a lot of problems. I just don't like the display. Other than that the phone is great. I think if Samsung went with a LCD display instead of the experimental AMOLED displays it would be miles better.

Yes the display is brilliant but that eats your battery. Dim it down all the way, open a web browser, and open settings. Or, open the messages window and you'll see banding.

If I crank up the brightness all the way I don't notice it. If I put it on auto, it dims the brightness a bit, and I notice the banding.

The question is do I need to let it burn in for awhile for it to go away or is it a defect? If it's a defect will it get worst?

I just think instead of playing with those questions I'll just return it and wait for the technology to mature more or wait until a phone like the nexus uses LCD tech instead.

I'm sorry to hear that you had so much problems with your display. I have no such issues: the display is positively brilliant in every respect. I hope that CES 2012 in a couple of weeks brings a mobile device that will leave us all breathless... and you a happy buyer of it :)

Honestly I don't quite understand complain like this on Nexus screen. It simply looks amazing, and I don't know what more can be asked for other than battery drain with high brightness. If SAMOLED type of screen doesn't satisfy you, then go with LCD screen phone by all means. Just know that LCD has other cons that might be or not ok with you.

LCD tech is a huge step backwards, just sayin' :D:D:D:D:D:D

I seem to notice it more with auto brightness on. even 50% is high. Reduce it to 20% - similar to auto brightness for me.

If I turn off auto brightness, change it to 50% brightness, I don't see it.

*shrug i dunno ... I'll sleep on it.

Auto brightness is way too dim for me, I keep mine at 50%.
The only time I see screen problems is when watching select video with a black background. There is a huge thread about that.
Others have commented on the screen banding also, here and other forums.

so I changed my brightness to 50% and went to youtube to watch a video. Picked one with a black background. It was a skyrim video. I noticed no banding.

So I don't know.

That's why I said select video which is why it's not a big deal for me. It doesn't happen to me in youtube video. It only happens on some movies I burned years ago, so I thought maybe that was the problem, but it doesn't happen on the south park episodes I burned with the same software during the same time period.
Go figure.

I'm just guessing here... handbrake..... which is just pure garbage unless you are encoding for the first generation iphone or a media player that is older.

We did cover this in another thread here, and handbrake is 100% suspect. If that's not your tool of choice, it might be similar.

I hate this display technology, it's better on battery, crisper, and the blacks are actually black. How dare they!

Maybe you just got a bad phone. My screen is beautiful. I would say its second only to iPhone 4 display. And I have no complaints with the keyboard except in the browser. Again only iPhone has a better keyboard, and that just may be me needing to readjust to the Android keyboard. As far as lag goes, I only experienced it in landscape and turning off haptic feedback eliminated the lag 100%. This keyboard is blazing fast.

I guess, the problem is I have 3 days left and I don't know if the stores are open on Sunday. I figure I'll just call and return the phone and go back to my old phone. Either that or get Assurance for 7 bucks a month and then not be so anal about it. *shrug

I guess I'm just worried it'll get worst over time.

I can't figure out if your screen is bad, or if our perceptions of our screens are just totally different. I leave mine on auto brightness most of the time, and even when it's dim and on a grey/white background, I just don't see anything wrong with it. And my eyesight is fine, no prescription needed lol. So I don't know, maybe you got two dud phones in a row, or maybe I'm just not discerning enough.

I know I'm not the only one that saw it because I had two other people look at my old phone and they saw the banding or vertical lines right away. Now my replacement phone is having the same problem and it's actually worst.

It's like vertical lines but their bands. Thick lines I guess.

With your phone do you notice the banding if you increase the brightness? Take off auto an change it to 100% brightness and see if you still notice it. Then wait a few seconds and let it dim and it shows up.

It's weird.

I also have vertical lines visible with certain screen colors.
