Root Titanium Back-Up & Apps To SD

Has anyone on stock/rooted 2.1.1 been able to use the Apps To SD function on TITANIUM BACK-UP with or without partitioning the SDcard?

I'm on CM7 & already have my card partitioned & TIBU APPS2SD works just fine.
I was just curious & trying to shed some light on this for those who are new to the forum or those who just want to free up some phone space & make their stock phone run better.

EDIT/FYI:Make SURE that you back-up your apps,ESPECIALLY SYSTEM APPS,before moving APPS2SD.While testing the APPS2SD feature on SYSTEM APPS,I got a force close on TIBU.
After opening TIBU again,I discovered the system app became deleted during the attempted move to sd.It was a non-essential system app,so,I got lucky,THIS TIME.


I was still able to move SYSTEM APPS to the SDcard,but,unless you know how to restore your phone/Operating System,I highly recommend against moving SYSTEM APPS to the SDcard.

Anyone that has been here for awhile knows that's how I got in a 'WORLD OF DOO-DOO' when I first landed @ ANDROID FORUMS,by NOT BACKING THINGS UP FIRST!

The TIBU clearly states to make sure you BACK-UP before performing APPS2SD.I'm hoping by my sharing this with all of you will prevent everyone here from making a crippling mistake w/their phones & operating systems.

For those that are interested in moving APPS2SD & the corresponding DALVIK CACHE to the SDcard,you can do so w/the following steps:

1) BACK-UP data on your SDcard to another source(computer,cloud storage,etc...)

2) Partition your SDcard.This can be accomplished using the app ROM MANAGER,or,if you're already running a custom ROM,you can use CWM Recovery to do this.

3) Download TITANIUM BACK-UP & perform a backup of all apps.Then,if desired,convert SYSTEM APPS to USER APPS by long-pressing on an app to see the options list.ONLY DO THIS WITH SYSTEM APPS IF YOU ARE CAPABLE of restoring them,as warned by TIBU.If you don't want to move SYSTEM APPS & keep things as safe,simple,&stable as possible,just stick w/moving USER APPS until you feel more comfortable to deal w/system apps.


3) Now,here's where you have a couple of decisions to make.You can use TIBU to move APPS2SD or to move even more data to the SDcard, download LINK2SD.

LINK2SD allows you to move the DALVIK CACHE,which in turn,frees up more internal memory.Either choice,TIBU APPS2SD or LINK2SD will make a BIG improvement over stock/rooted 2.1.1


Notes:
1) Those already on CM6 or CM7.At this time,I would avoid using the stock APPS2SD & LINK2SD @ the same time.Stock APPS2SD does not 'read' the apps being moved to the SDcard via LINK2SD.Not sure if anything drastically awful would happen,but, I'm suggesting leaving well enough alone.


2) On CM7,some SYSTEM APPS cannot be converted to USER APPS using the TITANIUM BACK-UP conversion feature.Those apps are probably best to be left on the phone's internal memory anyway,for stability purposes.Just MAKE SURE you have performed AT LEAST ONE BACK-UP before moving any APPS2SD,especially if converting SYSTEM APPS to USER APPS & subsequently moving the apps via LINK2SD.


3) For those running stock/rooted 2.1.1,partitioning the SDcard may not be necessary for TIBU APPS2SD* (not sure,I'm already partitioned) but,it is necessary for using the LINK2SD method.

*EDIT : The SDcard MUST be partitioned w/an EXT2,EXT3, or EXT4 2nd partition per TITANIUM BACK-UP.(See change log in TIBU for details{version 3.8.2})

Anyone that has questions on this,please post your concerns/issues/questions here & share your results w/everyone here.

Here are my numbers for using LINK2SD vs TIBU APPS2SD, moving only the USER APPS to the SDcard.Out of a possible 198 MB TOTAL AVAILABLE INTERNAL MEMORY:

LINK2SD :140MB AVAILABLE
TIBU APPS2SD :80MB AVAILABLE

The 60MB difference in memory gain is due to LINK2SD's ability to move DALVIK CACHE & LIB FILES to the SDcard.An even greater gain can be realized by converting SYSTEM APPS to USER APP via TIBU's conversion function & subsequently moving the converted apps using LINK2SD.

UPDATE on using LINK2SD w/CM7:

I've discovered one minor glitch in using LINK2SD on CM7 CRICKET ASCEND:
After re-booting,the lib. files migrate back to the phones internal memory.This is a minor & harmless flaw as most apps do not have lib files.
So,until this flaw is permanently fixed,all you have to do is look at your apps while in the LINK2SD app & see which apps have lib. files & move the lib. files back to the SDcard.The rest of the data for the affected apps continues to stay on the SDcard,so,it's not a lot of kb's/MB's that are erroneously migrating back to the internal memory.

*I will contact the developer of LINK2SD & notify him of this flaw & hopefully he is able to remedy the situation.
Whether this is a flaw in the app or perhaps a ROM or general ANDROID issue,I'm not sure.Either way,it's a minor flaw at most & if you are constantly re-booting & toying w/the phone,it's definitely not a big deal to move the affected files back to the SDcard.
So if you're using LINK2SD & notice a sudden drop in available internal memory & subsequent gain in SDcard available memory,take a look @ your apps lib. files on LINK2SD & that's probably the cause.

*The lib. file migrating back to internal memory is a known issue per the developers notes on the LINK2SD app in the ANDROID MARKET.Will update when changes/updates to the app are made available.**


**EDIT: I believe this issue of files migrating back has long since been solved.

I accidently converted think free office to user app ( by long pressing on it in titanium backup) . My phone restarted by itself n "think free office" was gone. couldnt find it anywhere. Any help?
p.s my phone is samsung galacy ace v2.3.4 rooted

If your phone is working 100% otherwise,can't you just re-download the app again?

I did when I first got my phone, before I started flashing or partitioning my sdcard. Worked fine for me, never had an issue. I could move them through the Android settings or TB and it all worked the same.

I use links2sd, and tibupro in unsion, one does something the other can't do. There's a diffrence of a few mB in the way they see storage. I've kept cm6 on my phone, since I think cm7 is just a little too strong for the hardware. I have noticed tibupro sometimes, will process a app to move to sd, will say that it did, but the next time I reboot the phone(after I run fix permissions), will revert the app back to internal memory. I think some apps are made to do this(easyexcel is one, got tired of that, and uninstalled it).
