Help Dropped in toilet

Hello! I'm new to this site (and wondering where its been all my life)

I started 2012 off by dropping my desire HD into the toilet. It was only on there for maybe 5 seconds, the casing for the battery popped off though.
I dried the batter, sim card, and covers off with paper towel. The phone works fine, for the most part.
There is no condensation on the screen, touch works fine. The volume did occasionly, randomly go up on its own or get stuck on vibrate. I turned it off, and a few hours later turned it back on again. Since, it has not done this volume thing again but I can not turn it down by the side button.
Also, of course, the camera does not work. It just shows blackness and there is condensation on the lens. Every now and then I hear clicking, like when the camera is trying to focus except the app isn't open.

I (just) read that turning it on is bad...so even though it (mostly) works fine, is there still a chance it could stop?

I don't have a landline, internet, nor tv so I use my phone for everything. Anyway of salvaging the camera though? Or why my down volume button doesn't work (up does)

Welcome to the forum, sorry you've started the year off by dropping your phone in the toilet.

Unfortunately, it needs at least 48 hours in a warm, dry cupboard, preferably in a box of rice for it to dry completely. Any less and you risk doing permanent damage to the phone. I know you're desperate to use it, but you need to give it time to dry properly before you use it again, sorry.

The phone can still short out if you have it on this quickly after dropping in water. take out all removable parts again and leave all the compartments empty then put it in warm airing cupboard on bed of rice for at least another 24 hours. DO NOT be tempted to turn it on during this period. if you don't have an airing cupboard then prop in path of warm hairdryer for couple of hours...at least a foot away to avoid overheating. After that then leave in a container on rice again overnight in a warm dry place like on top of a warm radiator. Don't be tempted to use an oven or a microwave :)

Been there, done that! Not with the DHD fortunately, but with older Nokias. Took them apart first and dried them with paper towels then used the hairdryer. Just wiping the outside will so nothing about all those little drops of water inside on the circuitry which will get busy corroding any metal parts they can find. Me thinks that's already happened to yours .... ooops!

The hairdryer then airing cupboard combo has resuscitated my sister's Galaxy twice now.

Thanks everyone :)
I let my relatives know that I can be contacted on my husbands phone for now. I buried the phone in rice and I did have it in sunlight...is that wrong? I don't have an airing cupboard (hot water tank is tucked inside a cutout in the bedroom closet)
I could put it....on top of the furnace (the top part doesn't get hot) or I'll have to dig out my hair dryer...it's around.. Somewhere ha

I thought for sure it would be okay....i had it in the rice overnight, put it back together this morning and now it only boots to a white screen with options fastboot recovery factory reset simlock and img crc with some androids on the bottom
Nothing happens when fastboot loads ( something about no image but it goes to fast)
My volume down doesn't work so I can't select anything else....

Well good news after all.kinda...
I used the very inaffective "get pissed cause it doesn't work, so throw it" method (not a usual method for me)
And now it works! Its recherging. I can text, the camera works again from what i can see (its dark but I can pick out my sons lime green dog)
It is in safe mode though and continues to go to vibrate alot..

Great news! It's 48 hours minimum to dry so may continue to improve. My sister's toddler decided recently to help her by washing her screen under the running tap with soap and all! In his defence he has seen us wash his glasses that way to get finger marks off etc. :) It took a week in all to fully settle down but now works perfectly again.
