Long time iPhone user - just ordered Rezound

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and to the Android world in general. I've owned the iPhone 1st gen and the iPhone 3GS. I've also gotten a lot of experience with the iPhone 4 and 4S through work. I'm an iOS developer, but I think I have just gotten bored with the iPhone. Also, it seems to me that Android has finally caught up to Apple/iOS. I dontmean that to be derogatory. Just an opinion. There were little things hold me back from Android before. Most of those are gone or moot points now. Please don't view that as an attempt to flame or anything.

After a TON of deliberation on getting the Rezound vs the Nexus, I just ordered the Rezound through wirefly. I'm a little nervous on being able to get everything working smoothly during the transition, but that's what the forum is for. Seem to be a lot of helpful people here. I chose not to have my number ported just yet. I want to make it through the first it of time to make sure I can live with the switch. I'll have them port the number once I'm confident. Just seems. To make things easier in case I need to cancel or exchange.

For the record, I'm still not ditching my iPad or Macs just yet, though

If anyone is curious about why I settled on the Rezound over the Nexus, here are a few points that settled it:

1) The signal issues that some are experiencing with the Nexus scare me. Leaving AT&T due to crappy service to go to Verizon then get dropped signals again would frustrate me to no end.

2) SAMOLED vs S-LCD. I'm used to how sunlight affects the S-LCDs after my experience with the iPhone 4 variants, and I've been fine with it. Im happy with the iPhone's screen and the rezound is even better without weird graininess I grays and such.

3) Battery life seems to be at least as good as the Nexus and many report even better.

4) HTC announced the unlockable boot loader, so it opens up options on the ROM front. This helps combat the ICS on Nexus as devs can begin work ROMs. Fingers crossed. ICS will hit the Rezound officially too early 2012 anyway.

5) The speaker is better on the Rezound. I've heard that it's fixable with Volume+ on the Nexus but comes with distortion.

6) microSD slot on the Rezound. The 32 GB on the Nexus would likely be enough, but nice to have the card option.

7) This is kind of a weird one, but I know a few people getting the Nexus and I kind of want something different from them. Not sure why.

8) Finally, just looking at the forums here alone. I see a lot of people posting how happy they are with their Rezounds in this forum. The Nexus forum is just full of people posting how this or that isn't working and how they aren't happy. I know forums are not the best judge, but there has to be a grain of truth in there somewhere.

I'll post my impressions in this thread after I receive it. I'm very excited. It seems like a great time to be entering the Android realm.

It's funny, I always check forums on a phone before I buy and scan the complaints. A lot of times reviews are written by people who want to LOVE their new toy and ignore shortcomings. So forums give a little bit more honest impressions.

Welcome to the asylum! How do you anticipate making the transition from iTunes to Android market? I have about 10-15 songs on iTunes that I haven't really bothered to try to convert. They're orphaned as far as I'm concerned. As far as apps, might I suggest installing Amazon's Android marketplace as they offer a free app of the day which might help you build your app library faster.

Some of the free apps I've been able to snag from Amazon are Bejeweled 2, Ad-free angry birds (don't laugh, it was their first app!), Autodesk Sketchbook Mobile, Documents to go full version, Printershare (when I'm remoted into wifi at work, I can print to any printer on the network as long as there's a driver available), Peggle, and a few other apps. All the apps I paid for on iTunes are a distant memory thanks to Amazon.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely get the Amazon Android Market app.

Most of my songs are DRM free since I did the iTunes match and re-download trick. I should be good there.

My biggest trick is how I'm going to managed syncing across iCloud to Google. Mainly to keep my contacts and calendars synced across my Mac, iPad, and the Rezound. Anyone have a working solution to this?

Welcome Dirtclodimus! From your list I think you've made a sound decision and will be pleased with your new phone. Generally speaking, there really aren't any nasty surprises waiting for you with the Rezound. And if Sense is a little busy for your taste, you can always load any of several other launchers. Now that the Rez is ROMable, you'll even be able to install something like MIUI that should help you feel less homesick for iOS. (Of course, we're all waiting for official or aftermarket ICS to arrive.)

BTW, I hope you'll decide to start writing Android apps. Someone with such a careful approach to beta testing their new phone would make a nice addition to our dev community.

I'm considering it. Part of the reason I'm switching is to learn the platform both to make me a better iOS dev by knowing the other side and to play with some android development.

I have 3 Macs in the house, with 2 iPhones. I have no intention of removing any of the Macs. I kinda of bounced around the past few years with phones. Got the iPhone when it first came out on ATT. Couldn't stand it. Ended up moving to verizon with the Droid Eris. Got rid of that and bought the Incredible, then the DX, then the iPhone 4.

I knew the only way I could stay long term with the iPhone was to jailbreak. I did, and it was good. Was disappointed with the latest 4s. Which was probably a good thing and it lead me to the Rezound. I think you made a good choice. Mentally I am still bouncing around. I look to see what else is out there, but honestly I can't justify buying any other phone. The Rezound is a well rounded device with few if any problems. This is one of the first devices I have had in quite a while which I am not finding issues with.

Most of the issues are in my head. LOL

Reading your post the first impression I am left with is that you may have a hard time of it.(not saying you will just that's the impression I get) You have been with the iphone for quite a long time and sometimes even if we want something different we get so programed from habit that its hard for us to accept something else. We almost subconsciously look for problems. I had a friend that played EQ2(an online MMO game) He got really bored with it and eventually quit. He asked me if I could recommend another MMO that was different from EQ2. I told him about 2 others that were really good games IMO. He tried them both for a whole 3 days(insert sarcastic eye roll) and quit both. When I asked him why he say well in EQ2 you can do this and in EQ2 you could do that, etc, etc, etc. All I could do was stand there and look at him thinking wasn't the point of this to give you a change? To try to get as far away from that game as possible? In the end he was just too used to that game/format. Reading your post this memory just popped to mind. I truly hope you approach this "trial period" with as open a mind as possible. With that being said....welcome to android and more specifically to the ReZound forums and owners circle. Glad to have you for however long it turns out to be.

Funny that you mention that. My wife gave me the same sort of talk, and I can definitely understand where you're coming from. I'm not expecting the transition to be easy, but I'm finding that I'm craving choice more and more. Didn't mention it in the first post, but that's another factor in all of this. The fact that choosing a new Android phone was tough because I had so many choices was kind of refreshing as opposed to "Do I want the 16, 32, or 64 GB white or black version?". I'm looking forward to making my phone my own too outside of just changing my wallpaper.

I am pretty picky about devices,where i did not own an Iphone,i had the 4g ipod touch and loved it,but the rezound brought that love back to a mobile device,i am sure there are users out there who got problem units,but mine came perfect out of the box,i think you made the right choice,enjoy all that is from this excellent android smartphone.

It was a Free App of the day awhile ago. The execution of it on the Rezound is as smooth as it is on my parents' computers (actually smoother than my father's Windows 7 64-bit). The Apps I posted above were at one time free. You have to check Amazon's market at least once per day or else you'll miss out on that one must have app. There should be a thread posting all the free apps that have come down the pike via Amazon.

lol, that's setting a high expectation for him isn't it? In reality, he'll probably see more like 10-20 Mbps, still nothing to sneeze at, but consistent 40s isn't to be expected.

Can we be real here? If you're any kind of a programmer, then no you won't have the slightest problem adjusting. And we already know what kind of a programmer you are, since you're motivated to look beyond a single OS environment to build your development skills.

I don't have an iPad so I'm not sure about that end but I have no problem keeping my Mac and Rezound on the same page. It's pretty easy to sync iCal and Address Book with their respective Google services. Address Book, for instance, you just go to Preferences>Accounts and check "Synchronize with Google". You can add a contact on your phone (provided you save it to Google and not just locally) and Address Book will update it on your Mac.

Welcome to Android! I have no plans of ditching my Mac either.

I received my Rezound. I'm pretty happy with it so far. Much happier since I installed Launcher Pro. I will post my full impressions thus weekend. Only negative so far is that my buttons are fairly pink. Not a deal breaker, but a little annoying.

Whew! Scared the crap out of me. I thought you said you have fairy pink buttons. I could just see it now. People ask me what color my buttons were and I reply fairy pink. Thank god you said fairly pink!

Haha! Fairy pink works too. May as well be cuz its definitely not red.

The single men in here have a work-around for the pink buttons (hetero ones at least). If anyone asks about the pink buttons, the reply is (best within earshot of any attractive women in the area), "I'm such a staunch supporter of breast cancer awareness that I took apart my $600+ phone and faded out the red buttons as a reminder that we need to focus all resources available to find a cure for breast cancer."
