neither Here nor There
Just wanted to give a welcome to all of the new Mercury owners.(or prospective owners or those just new to this forum) This is the place to introduce yourself or leave a quick message about whatever. Hope you will all post here in the Mercury forum so we can build a little community. All the other Cricket phone forums are pretty much abandoned, hopefully we can keep this one alive. (the Ascend had a good community, but it was mostly Metro users)

Non-Mercury using visitors are welcome also!

Special message to all lurkers: lurking is fine, but why not sign up? It only takes a minute, and when you feel like throwing your two cents in about something, you'll be ready!

Again, welcome to all!:)

Thanks Gmash! I'm new to this/any forum but I've been checking out threads for quite some time. I have a Meiying Tablet running 2.3 [having a power issue] that I'd like to see if I can root to 3.0 or better. Also, looking @ getting the Huawei Mercury from Cricket. I'm a happy CW customer wit ha ZIO but looking to upgrade soon! Hopefully, the ICS upgrade will be available or instructions to root to ICS will be available and easily understood for a novice like me. Talk to y'all soon!

Peace!

Welcome to the forum! Glad to have ya! I'm not the most technical myself. I'm still hoping for an easier rooting method to come along for the Mercury. I'd like to get rid of some bloatware, and I really miss my Adfree Android lol.

Although this is my first post and the name gives away my age, there is no Carrier IQ on the Mercury. I tested it the other day. It would only show up should Cricket choose to use it. Sure am waiting for an easier way to Root this baby. Long time lurker, figured I would jump in!! This forum helped me immensly with my Ascend. Great little phone it was, now not so great! ;)

Welcome to the forum! I haven't checked, but I sure wouldn't put it past Cricket to put CarrierIQ on their phones. I'm not really too concerned about it, but would obviously rather not have it. Another reason to look forward to custom ROMs! Glad you finally decided to join up! (Mercury>Ascend lol)

Yeah, I checked using three different apps and they all say we have it. Can't say i'm surprised, anything evil and Cricket will do it. I don't have much trust in those kinds of apps, either, though, I uninstalled them as soon as I was done using them. (not that I don't believe it, just think a lot of those A/V companies are shady)

My apologies to all, but I could have sworn when I ran the Look Out App about a week ago it said that it wasn't there. Ran it again and now it shows up as being there. My Ascend did not have it either, probably like mentioned earlier that it was CM-7. Once again my apologies to all.

Thanks for all you guys do on here. Would be lost without you sometimes!!

Thanks again!!

Okay, I need your help. I have a Motorola Triumph, coming from Virgin Mobile. I pay $45 a month for 1200 minutes and unlimited text and data. A $10 increase for unlimited everything with Cricket is certainly worth considering.

With the Motorola Triumph, I thought I was getting a good phone. It is actually a nice phone, and there have been many notable developers who have helped make it better. Here's my gist: Motorola has not rolled out an update for this phone for about 6 months. This phone shipped with problems.

My question is, is it worth considering switching to Cricket and getting the Huawei Mercury? Please explain in detail why or why not.

This is a hard question to answer. I guess it all depends on what is most important to you. First of all Cricket doesn't really have unlimited data, they only give you 1GB before they start throttling. VM I think doesn't throttle until 2 or 2.5GB, so that's something to consider.
I used to follow the Triumph forum quite a bit, so I am aware of the issues with it. In my opinion, the Mercury is the superior phone. I haven't seen any of the hardware defects that affected the Triumph, and the stock ROM is very stable. On the other hand, as far as I know, there are no devs actively working on the Mercury, so if custom ROMs are important to you, you might want to hold off and see if a dev community develops for this phone.
If you are happy with the Triumph and VM, is the Mercury enough of an upgrade to consider switching? I can't answer that for you, but I will say I really like my Mercury, and have been very happy with it so far. Hope this helps a little, and best of luck with whatever you decide. Maybe some other people will have some thoughts to add?

Thank you so much. I think I will definetly make the switch to the Mercury! Spec wise, it looks like an amazing phone. I just posted my phone, two cases, two batteries, a car charger, and the stock charger and cable up for sale on eBay.

I don't blame Cricket for CarrierIQ. Huawei has been known to use it in their UK telecom switches and everywhere else too. They've also been accused of spying for China, but that's something else.

I don't think CIQ is too deep in the phone and can be removed easily. Once a custom ROM is made, we should be safe :)
Well, i'm not really worried about it, but it is the carriers that have CIQ put on the phones. Think about it, it's Cricket receiving the data, not Huawei.

Well, I'm not so much worried about Cricket/Leap Wireless, I'm worried about who else gets it. I believe its all sent to CarrierIQ first. The main problem, besides privacy, is data usage. That 1GB doesn't go far. Even though the guy at the store assured me its unlimited even after I mentioned its 1GB then throttles. Lol

Congrats to me! I'm in the club now! Whoo Hoo!

Loving this little sucker!

I down loaded a PSX emulate r and a 180MB game and it hasn't even made this beast take a breath.

So where are we standing with rooting and ROMs?
Welcome aboard! It's been pretty quiet in here lately, we could use some new members! There is a method to root, but you need to have Linux to do it. I haven't rooted mine yet. We don't have any devs on board yet, but I'm not really missing it so far. The stock ROM is very stable and this phone is plenty fast. I'm not sure what a custom ROM would really add unless it was Ice Cream Sandwich based. Congrats on the new phone, I know you'll enjoy it, especially compared to the Ascend lol.

Hey all, just got my Mercury today, upgraded from an Ascend, can't wait to see the extreme difference, because my Ascend is so damn slow and just falling apart, even after I modded the hell out of it.

Charging it now, but any good tips or suggestions on what I should do with this phone when I start using it? Apps, games, programs, what to delete, what to keep, those kinds of things.

Thanks guys!

..and should I really wait a full night to charge or just to 100%? It's killing me letting it sit over there looking lonely.
