Apple copied LG?!!?!

About the build quality of the iphone. :) You are absolutely right that the experiment in the video could have been documented better.
But it is a fact that the Iphone 4 is a very fragile device and there are plenty of sources to back that claim. The iphone is very pretty but not durable. When you strengthen a fragile material to make it more scratch-proof, it becomes more fragile and prone to shatter on a shock (like a drop).
Here is a nice article explaining this matter a lot more eloquently then I can.

Design Test Note: Fragile Beauty

I have no idea if the issue has been fixed in the 4s.

^^ = Wall of text.
...and that was the condensed version  :D

It might just be me, but I see a lot more similarities to the prada than the Samsung.
No I see similarities too, of course there are similarities, BUT you can't sue over a "similarities" ;) If that was the case then no company would ever want to come out with new products. All products have similarities, it's just a matter of where you draw the line. My car has similarities to your car, and I don't even need to know what kind of car you own

But it is a fact that the Iphone 4 is a very fragile device .
I don't know if that's fact or just wishful thinking on the part of some Apple haters. It couldn't have been any worse than the Nokia POS that I used to own. I'll never buy another Nokia phone again because of it. All I know is that every Apple product that I've ever owned was designed much better than other products in the same category. The materials used were also of higher grade. I'd be surprised if the iPhone 4 was any different. I used to want a iPhone but not anymore. With the release of the Samsung Galaxy S II I no longer care about the iPhone. Basically because the screen on the Galaxy S II is better and the processor is better, but you just gotta know that the iPhone 5 is going to blow the Samsung product out of the water when it comes out, and then the year after that the iPhone 5 will be blown out of the water by someone else, and so on and so on. Most people use a screen protector and a case with their phone so this issue doesn't matter anyway :)

Preview Prada Phone LG KE850 - YouTube

Here is a video of the LG Prada KE850.

Note the video is uploaded in February 7, 2007

Before iPhone, and Android.

Yet it not only features a design that foreshadows the iPhone, but the iPhone 4S with its black sandwich design with metal in between.

Now watch the video itself and more amazing things happen:

Floating widgets.
Live wallpapers

Note the use of software onscreen menu and return buttons.

Continue watching the video. You will see a touch based mobile game.

What this video doesn't show but other Prada phone videos in Youtube shows, is changeable theme sets, similar in use with late generation HTC Sense. The video you see has the blue theme on, the default is a monochromatic theme.

What the video also didn't show but another video would show is that when you click on that Clock widget, it brings forth a small app that allows you to interact with the widget and adjust its settings. When was the last time under which operating system did you see interacting translucent widgets?

What's really remarkable is that the above is a featurephone. And yes, it is a capacitive screen too, since you notice, everything reacts with a human touch and not a stylus.

The second generation Prada became a Windows Mobile phone, and the third generation Prada just came out last December, an Android phone. But the operating system you see here went to the Viewty and powered other LG touchphones to come.

Before iPhone, and Android.

Don't just tell part of the story, tell the full truth.

The first iPhone was unveiled by Steve Jobs on January 9, 2007.

The official press release of the Prada appeared on January 18, 2007.

Looks like the iPhone was brought to press over a week sooner.

A month before the iPhone was announced LG briefly mentioned the Prada, but has since removed the webpage.

The iPhone had been under development long before either device was brought to market. Steve Jobs wanted a phone which reflected Apples Newton MessagePad from the mid 90

I'm quite sure it is not just wishfull thinking. The internet is full with reports on the vulnerabilities of the Iphone 4, many of them testimonies from insurance companies and iphone users.
It takes more then materials that feel expensive to make good industrial design. It has to look good, but it also has to age well and be able to endure daily use. With a smartphone that includes being able to take a hit.
When you encase your entire phone in slippery, super hard and thus fragile glass, that qualifies as a poor design choice.

I agree with you, that would be a poor design choice, but we're talking about the iPhone 4, and that's NOT what Apple did. Here is a link to the Apple iPhone 4 teardown. The facts speak for themselves. First of all the body of it is made out of stainless steel. Ifixit studied it and said it

No it wasn't, it was because samsung violated design rights. The law is very specific about design rights. A "similarity" is not ;)

And what Apple is essentially saying with these suits is that NOBODY ELSE can build a candy-bar formfactor mobile device with rounded corners. If you read the link posted that lists the suggestions Apple made to Samsung so they wouldn't violate Apple design patents it's absolutely insane that Apple is allowed to get away with what they are. Yes, they may have design patents, but maybe the patents themselves should be reviewed instead of being upheld.

To pick an example off the link:
Overall shape that isn’t rectangular, or doesn’t have rounded corners.
REALLY?! What shape does Apple propose be used, circular? Phones certainly had this shape before (Motorola Slvr comes to mind, I had one).

This is the link, to refresh everyone http://androidandme.com/2011/12/new...nges-samsung-can-make-to-avoid-legal-trouble/

what say you about.... the engineering that went into the antenna issue?
Could you please be more specific? Thanks :)

special glass front is great.. but back is not such a good idea in my opinion.
I agree. Personally I wish the rear was made out of stainless, but most people use a case (I use leather) so it's not a big deal to me. The good thing is that Apple will review everything and make any necessary adjustments with the iPhone 5. There are also aftermarket rear panels made out of other materials for those who don't use a case.

And what Apple is essentially saying with these suits is that NOBODY ELSE can build a candy-bar formfactor mobile device with rounded corners.
Every other manufacture had a chance to design patent this also. If Apple wasn't the first to come up with this design patent then they wouldn't have been awarded the patent in the first place. Apple is not stupid, they know that other companies are going to try to copy them. That's why they're very specific when they write up these design patents. I think we can all agree that it's a very competitive market. If a company (any company) doesn't show that they are trying to uphold their design patents - then they are at risk of losing them. If you were a company you'd want every edge that you could get. Apples just doing what comes natural to technology companies. I'll give you a good example; it's been shown that instead of making a rigid device framework that's used on all phones, notebooks, tablets, etc. that Apple will soon use a new method very similar to using fabric. This will be very similar to a scroll that was used in ancient times. OK now fast forward 5 years when other companies will want to copy them to be completive.... What's from keeping someone like you saying "REALLY?! What material does Apple propose be used, water?" To which I would have to say this is not Apples problem. They were first at using this, and so they were awarded the patent. That's how it works. Each company needs to be responsible for their own innovativeness. Apples always in the lead of any new design and their only responsibility (as a company) is to protect their design patents, and that's exactly what they're doing. Apple can say anything that they want, but it's not Apples world and the courts will decide if they are right or not. Apples just 'putting it out there' for the courts to vote on it.

What shape does Apple propose be used, circular?
Again, this is not Apples problem, and each company needs to be responsible for its own innovativeness. Apple, as a company, just needs to show that they are trying to protect their design patents. Every company works under these same rules.

The article and this thread are talking about the stolen or coincidental styling queues between the Prada and the iP4, not the original iPhones... which don't have a lot in common. It does look like Apple took the Prada and "2011'd" it.

just for fun...

I am going to point back at the article from Gizmodo I posted before.Design Test Note: Fragile Beauty

It doesn't matter that it is strengthened, like aluminosilicate glass, the one Apple uses in the iPhone 4's. In fact, strengthening glass to avoid scratching

i really wanted to post a rant on this forum, I'm just hoping the people at the Android forums will be more fair on the topic.

When the LG prada phone came out it was revolutionary, a year later the first iPhone was released, back then Apple was accused for copying LG but nothing happened. NOW with the 4 and the 4S, people are saying the design is elegant and revolutionary!!! They just copied LG even more!!! Don't believe me? Heres a comparison

See what i mean?

Picture 1: Slightly different shape, different thickness, different logo placement, different radius and different buttons
Picture 2: Completely different button arrangement
Picture 3: Different buttons at the bottom, different screen size

I guess you mean they are both cell phones. Then I agree, Apple copied the others and how dare they bring a phone to market, those liars and thiefs.

are you pulling my leg??
No, but I might be willing to pull your finger...

Less that one half of one percent of iPhone 4 AppleCare calls were about this issue. Apparently 99.95% of iPhone 4 owners didn't experience this issue, yet Apple still worked to resolve it. Even though it was such a small amount it was still a good chunk of phones because 3 million iPhone 4's were sold. No product is perfect 100% of the time in every possible situation. Other phones like the Samsung Omnia 2 and the BlackBerry Bold had the same exact issue, and yet no one is squawking about them. Maybe it's because 3 million of those phones weren't sold. In any event it

If anyone was following anyone else, it appears that LG was trying to emulate Apple ;)

Apple is a target and other manufacturers are trying to compete. As soon as they come close, Apple releases something new and the circle of life continues. Then come the complaints that Apple copied android and never a complaint about how many Android phones look the same. Same old battle that will never be won. Same old arguments served up by people that post info they find on the web and they are simply clueless.

Not sure there would be an Android phone or tablet if it were not for Apple.

I looked at a few cell phones and I am amazed at how many Android phones look alike. My Triumph looks like the Droid Bionic and they both look like the Infuse. Sorta. If you pick out the tinyist of silly details one phone sports over another, lots of android devices look alike. Unfair to call Apple a thief when everyone seems to borrow this and that.

What about those lock screens for android? Nothing is ever said about how much one LS or theme or home replacement loos like another depending on the theme.

I think this thread is all about hating Apple and nothing to do with who took what. Like it really matters which tiny design idea was taken or stolen or borrowed. IT DOES NOT AFFECT YOU ONE BLOODY BIT!

Some posters are arguing about when iPods, iPhones, and LGs were released or created and they cant seem to agree on the history.

The guys who started Android (Andy Rubin etc) used to make the Tmobile Sidekick. Android as a company was formed around 2003.... waaaaay before the release of the first iphone. Google bought Android (2005) about 2 years before the release of the first iphone (2007).

I'm not sure why there's confusion about when these things happened. Though some people seem to be posting incorrect information.

Its a Android forum, so of course some will whine about Apple.

If it were a Chevy forum you don't think they'd be praising Henry Ford do you? ;)

Those with a level head and knowledge might. Lots to be said about HF and lots to be critical of as well. I do get your point, however. Ever visit a Nikon or Cannon forum? Fights break out and sometimes, both sides of the argument are wrong.

I often read a Harley forum and lots of people would love to have an Indian Chief or a Vincent and would willingly trade straight across.

I am considering a new camera; a real budget killer digital camera called a Red Scarlet-X. Red's tiny little digital cameras were/are used to film motion pictures and the tech fascinates me no end. No business buying the thing, I suppose. I was recently at a forum where a few were bashing the device without knowing anything about it. For them, (if you believe they actually owned one) the Hasselblad weighing in at sixty plus thousand dollars was better.

the last thing you want to learn about is a better camera; then again, you need to define better.

I say take these debates with a grain of salt. If iDevices truly sucked, we would see large numbers returned and Apple would what they are today. And there is no doubt that cell makers create look-alike phones within the vast ranks of Android phones. Seems to me if I were designing a cellphone, I would need my phone to look like other devices to some degree.

Because there is so much wrong info on the web. Frankly, I can never be sure.
