Root Starting to be disheartened

Sure, some roms have different tweaks than others. If you want something clean and similar to the stock rom, go with TommyTomatoe's Evo Classic rom. Or you could even download his Senseless version that just came out today.

Something like MikG has an upgraded version of Sense with a bunch of tweaks built in. You get into Sense 3.0 and above and it has stuff like Carousel built in, or even Dre Beats, but I don't think it's 100% functional yet.

Then there is AOSP stuff if you are bored with Sense. Anything with a CM7 base (CM7, deck's, salvagemod, etc) have a built in theme chooser which can drastically change the look of your rom. Or for the ultimate experience in theming, there is MIUI. It's just a matter of flashing different stuff until you find your own personal sweet spot.

And even then, most of us still keep flashing different things. I can almost never stay on any single setup for longer than a week.

I haven't seen much different between roms aside from the launcher. Is there any real reason to flash different roms aside from getting different launchers? I'm very find of ics launcher, but that's free on the market.

Sense ROMs are based on Sense not going to be drastic differences between them. Sounds like to me you are just bored with the looks I would suggest learning about themeing. I am and while I admit I have a little bit of programming background its not nearly as competent as this stuff is. Patience is the key here.

What are you looking for? The biggest thing you gain from romming is the the battery life and the better performance of your phone? What are you expecting from a custom rom? An omlette ready and waiting when you wake up? LoL Anywho, Im just curious about what your expectations are, and if you indeed know what one should expect from a custom rom. If you want a stock look, there are launchers for that. If you want to make it totally customized, there are roms that allow for that. For instance, on my notification bar it says "Dugs Evo" where yours says sprint. There are little finite things you can change to make the phone truly yours along with the added speed and better battery life you get from many rom/kernel combos. Just tell us what youre looking to accomplish and im sure we can point you in the right direction man :D

I've played with pretty much every setting and tweak in every ROM because i do like customization and making the phone truly mine. I want my phone pretty much to look and maybe act nothing like an Android phone (or iPhone, i tried miui). All of the roms pretty much look the same. The only difference I've really noticed was in the launchers.

Ok, we know what you dont want.... but its a phone... so its gonna bear resemblance to something, somewhere. Its gonna have icons that you touch in order to launch apk's and its gonna have launchers. Thats the nature of the beast since thats what the phone does. Even the ICS rom is going to look more similar than different to whats already happening here with GB and FroYo. Long story short, what are you looking for specifically?

If you want to break the monotony, here's what I did. Stop flashing for a while, relax. Then you'll notice a lot of new roms and it'll be like a great new find!

Or get into development, then you could create a new launcher that you'll like. I don't really know what else to say. A lot of the roms are similar, but they all have a unique feel to them. IDK.

You have to remember most people like familiarity. If you go to wal-mart you will find most of them are all the same have key departments in relatively the same areas. Now they may be on opposite sides. However they have done a lot of research to find out which layouts works. Phones are pretty much the same way. Companies want you to quickly learn the product. So the changes are usually small.

Thanks for the info on the tommytomatoe...these ROMs look killer! The new Senseless one could be right up my alley.

If you want to really customize then I suggest finding which ROM/kernel setup gives you the best balance of performance and battery life (for me it is currently mikG 3.0 + Anthrax kernel). Once you have that you now have your base to build on. From there start messing with custom launchers (ADW, GoLauncher, etc.) and all the other apps available to modify your phone. If you want an idea of just how custom you can make your phone look go check out mycolorscreen.com. There are also some great resources available to help like deviantart.com and various threads on xda that have themes for different launchers, etc,.

I'll tell you what motivated me to flash different roms and such, the Galaxy S2... I've been salivating over it since it came out and I just can't afford one. So I made my evo look, act, and feel as much like the S2 as possible.

The look and feel can always be tweaked, but if you're not seeing the performance you want then keep flashing until you do.
