Game controller

For bluetooth you could use a PS3 controller if you are Rooted (via the Sixaxis app). Non-Root options are the Datel Retro Wireless/Phonejoy/iControlPad/GameTel controllers.

See my YouTube channel for demo's of several of those (catch a link via the blog link below). I also did a video for the Clove Technology YouTube channel showing the Datel one with the Galaxy Tab. Will post links later when not at work unless someone beats me to it.

I cover a lot of these over at The Green Robot Gamer wiki ...

Green Robot Gamer

Here is the big issue you will face.

1. Xbox 360 controllers won't work. Wired ones work great if you have a USB port.
2. PS3 controller is a pain in the butt. Just all around.
3. Wii wireless remote is king IMHO on Android devices - but not for the games you're talking about. Not enough buttons.
4. The Wii classic controller might do the trick - but only if you're willing to tether it to a Wii wireless remote.
5. The "ultimate" Datel Retro Wireless mentioned above is great - if you can find one. Good luck with that.
6 Gamestop controller would probably work - if you want to pay $99 for it.

Your best bet without a USB port, IMHO? Classic Wii Controller tethered to a Wiimote - even then, I can't promise anything.

Wired PS3 controller on USB works very good for Shadowgun.

Thanks for the replies so far! I was also unable to find the Datel retro wireless.

What about an OnLive universal wireless controller?

I haven't been able to get my hands on one yet.

I know they have one either out or COMING out for the Android platform. My guess is that it would likely work - at least if you can get some sort of remapping tool like USB/BT Joystick Center to recognize it.

Getting a controller to connect - just part 1 of the battle. Getting it to work right with a game? That can require some work.

The good news is that a lot of games are "Xperia Ready", which means they have STANDARD "CONTROLLER" mappings already set up. IF you can get a bluetooth controller to connect to your Android device - it may immediately map to a "CONTROLLER". It does on Android 3.2 - at least on my Asus Transformer.

I use a Wii controller with the classic Wii controller attached to play Shadowgun, you also need to download "WIImote controller" from the android market (its free), open the battery compartment on your wii controller (your looking for the red sync button), open the app and click "init and connect" and click the red sync button the program is now synced up with the controller.

Next go to settings, language and input, current input method & change to "WiicontrollerIME" (when you need to go back to onscreen keyboard input, go back here and change it to keyboard)

On the same menu click "Configure input method", scroll down to WiicontrollerIME and click "Settings", then click "Mapping options", then click "1st Controller mappings", scroll down to the "1st classic controller", below are the keys I used for Shadowgun, click each button you'll be using on the controller then click the letter I have showing what the action will do in the Shadowgun game.

7-Reload
D-Pad Center-Fire
D-Pad Up, Left, Down, Right-Analog 1
A-Shotgun
D-SMG
I-Analog 2 Up
J-Analog 2 Left
K-Analog 2 Down
L-Analog 2 Right
S-Rocket Launcher
W-Grenade Launcher
Back-Pause Game

I used the following for my setup:

x = number 7
y = D
a = A
b = Dpad center
start = Back
left stick up = Dpad up
left stick down = Dpad down
left stick left = Dpad left
left stick right = Dpad right
right stick up = I
right stick down = K
right stick left = J
right stick right = L
L = S
R = W

Shadowgunning on a 32" HDTV, yeah baby!

Hi NZtechfreak,
I have been following your blog..Its awesome....And the connectivity video demo was really good...But the problem is you didnt show clearly how you connected USB/BT Joystick and how to work with it(i mean details of setting it up)..Its really annoying with so many options.So IF you please make a video or if you can let us know how to doit,it would be really helpful...Sitting idle with my game controller and USb/Bt app.....Also S3 doesn't seem to mount NTFS external HDD device...I read somewhere Fat32 only works...is it so????? :( :(...thanks in advance...
