Root Kernel suggestions after Tiamat 3.3.7?

So I've been using Tiamat 3.3.7 for about a week or so and I'm not liking it. While it seems to not burn much (if any) battery power while the phone is asleep, it uses up power like no one's business while I'm using it. If I am surfing the internet, running a few apps, checking a few emails, and make a telephone call, I'm down to almost 50% in about 1 1/2 hours. Also, I don't know if the kernel has to do with this, but I have a lot of glitching (for lack of a better word) when I use the phone and tons of lag when I try to use the things I most commonly use the phone for: making calls, text messages and navigation. Even swype gets squirrly.

What are the next suggested kernels for the Evo? I don't mind it burning up some power while I sleep, so long as it's not the Hummer of Evo battery use while I'm actually using it.

FYI - I'm running CM7.1.

That's certainly interesting. How well does your phone handle other undervolted kernels? What rom are you running by the way? You need to be running an AOSP rom with the Tiamat kernel.

Tiamat 3.3.7 is slightly undervolted compared to other aosp kernels, and it sounds like your phone might not like that. Have you ever tried flashing Vipermod? You can raise your minimum voltages that way. Also, Tiamat 3.3.8 raised the minimum voltage levels by 25mv, so your phone might like that better

For another Tiamat kernel, 4.0.6 was pretty widely used for quite awhile. Savagedzen is still pretty popular. Here's some links.

Vipermod - http://db.tt/izxKt3Zf
(flash in recovery, reboot, go to terminal emulator. Type su, hit enter, then type vipermod and press enter. Go to lower voltages, raise by 25, go back to main menu and save changes. Reboot)

SavagedZen 2.2.1 CFS - http://db.tt/ic3yJvE4

Again, this is all for AOSP. If you're on Sense, you need a Sense kernel.

Thanks! I edited my OP to show I'm running CM7.1. This is the only Kernel I've tried. I initially rooted and flashed MikG3.0, and it seemed to work ok (but so did this at the beginning). Are all of those just kernels (even Vipermod?)?

Ok so 3.3.8 works a lot better with regards to lag, FC, etc. I think the undervoltage of 3.3.7 was a big problem for my phone.

However, battery life is even worse on this one. It rapidly discharges during use (like a % point every minute) and I will lose about 15 percentage points during the night with no use as well. In contrast, before rooting, I could go a day and a half without charging and moderate use (this battery is about 1 year old).

My question, is there something like 3.3.8 (i.e. higher voltage) that is a bit less strenuous on the battery? I'm going to give one more kernel a try and if that doesn't do it I'll just suck it up and buy a new battery (as I have another 11 months with this phone).

Remember when you flash a new kernel (every time you flash a kernel, even if you have ran it before in the past) you need to give it at least 2 and preferably 3 days before making judgment decision on whether battery life is good or bad. It needs time to settle.

I've had this Kernel on here for about 4-5 days.

For example. This morning I took the phone off the charger at about 6:50 fully charged. Updated 3 apps and surfed the web for about 20 minutes. Stopped using my phone around 7:30 when I walked in to work (i.e. no apps, no phone calls, the screen wasn't even on). I just looked at my phone again (noon) and I'm at 70%. I've had GPS and wi fi on.

That's no bueno :(

There has gotta be a rogue process somewhere. That or your phone just really hates that kernel.

It REALLY didn't like the last one (3.3.7). It lagged pretty badly, had trouble loading stuff, and the battery was wildly erratic.

I am just not sure my phone likes being rooted. Since rooting I've gotten a ton more space for apps (that I don't use very often), and everything else is worse.

The act of rooting your phone doesn't make anything slower or mess anything up, it's what you do after rooting your phone that can do that. Bad wiping, bad flashing and things like that contribute to the vast majority of those kinds of problems. Here's what I would recommend:

1. Amon RA - can't stress this enough. It wipes correctly, TWRP and Clockwork have issues. Stick with Amon. Either use 2.3 or the newer version, 3.07 or something like that.

2. When flashing a new ROM, always wipe everything except SD card, and then be sure to also flash Calkulin's Format All.zip file or the Virus Superwipe. This will ensure that you have a clean phone when flashing a rom.

3. Verify MD5sums before flashing anything. Sometimes a download can get corrupted, and this can cause issues. Just earlier this week I had a bad download of something. If there is an MD5 listed on the site/post where you're downloading a file, use one of the market apps to check the MD5 to make sure it matches. If you have root explorer, you can check it by long pressing on a file, then selecting properties, and one of the things it will list is the MD5.

4. Before flashing anything but a new rom (any mods or tweaks of any kind) you absolutely must wipe cache and dalvik cache. Do it twice if it makes you feel better, but again, Amon RA does it correctly the first time so it really isn't needed.

I gotta agree, I don't think it's the kernel if you're getting poorer battery life than pre-root. I would suggest and memory killer type app and sd maid. I just installed tiamat 2.6.38.5 and I'm getting amazing battery life.

Have you tried another rom? I was on cm7 and just flashed xplod, may be an option for you...it's very stable.

Do:you mean a task killer? They aren't needed anymore and can do more harm than good.

Thanks, I did all of that except for verifying the MD5sums, though I've literally checked with this board on every download I've made (to ensure it was the correct download site).

Maybe it's still that the kernel is bad. Like doing Navigation/Maps/Latitude is a pain now. It FC's a lot and is REAL slow, the GPS jumps around a bit (I am running CM7 and flashed the GPS fix) and the friggin Navigation won't rotate, it always points north! Such a pain.

try wiping dalvik cache and cache to fix your lag and fc's. and for the gps you did flash the qualcom drivers correct? and have you tried the latest tiamat (4.1 i think)?
