Take a look at the sticky at the top of this forum, it links to something called the ace hack kit. Read the manual and take it from there.

Obviously shout if you get stuck, but it's a pretty painless process by all accounts

2.3.5 is rootable

It is rootable, but you will need to downgrade using an RUU first (the hack kit does this for you), and this will wipe all your data etc so make sure you backup stuff like SMS, contacts etc before you go for it.

How do i backup?

SMS Backup can be done with an app called SMS Backup and Restore which will do the SMS backups, Call history can be done with this: Call History Backup. You can backup your contacts to gmail by following these steps: http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-...c-desire-g-mail-windows-mail.html#post3069437

Apps are associated with the gmail account so they'll redownload themselves once you've installed the new ROM. You'll lose the data associated with them unfortunately, but there's no way around that.
