Root Combination of all the usual rooting problems at once -- please help!

Please bear with me, I've searched all over various forums for solutions to my problem, and all of them lead me to a dead end somewhere.

So, I have an Incredible SLCD, and I was planning on rooting and putting CM on it.

It had 2.3.4, and when I attempted to root it with the latest Unrevoked (3.3 I think?), I received the "version too new" error

I followed a guide to place it back to 2.2 using unrevoked 3.22, but unrevoked failed in the middle, causing my phone to go to into the bootloop (boots, shows htc incredible screen, flashes off and does the whole thing again)

Using the hboot menu, I attempted to use recovery, but I fear I may have accidentally wiped the backup, and so now I can't restore (tells me it couldn't find it). Additionally, recovery gives me the black screen with two vertical white lines, so I had to use ddms to see the screen on my computer.

So, I followed the guide incredibleforum to get back to stock, but after booting and loading the img, I get the "Main Version is older! Update Fail!" message. The RUU method on that doesn't work either, presumably because the usb can't connect since I can't boot in.

This is where I'm stumped. basically, I just want to get a stock 2.2 rom onto the phone, so I can attempt to root and place CM on it, or really anything to make it functional again.

To make it clear, the phone is Incredible SLCD, with S-ON, un-rooted (afaik, since unrevoked failed)

I know these threads show up all the time, but I can't find anything to help me with my problem. Thanks in advance!

At this point you are rooted but since you didn't load the slcd compatible version of clockwork recovery (step 2 in the downgrade thread), your only option at this point is to start over. Start here to get yourself back to a working version of 2.3.4

http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/181255-how-return-stock-gingerbread.html

You can also download the stock image from here http://pvillecomp.com

Basically your are going to load the 2.3.4 PB31IMG.zip file from hboot and start from scratch following every single step in the 2.3.4 downgrade and root process thread EXACTLY, do not skip the part about changing the recovery. *TAKE YOUR TIME*

http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/427344-2-3-4-root-downgrade-s-off.html

You can not just skim through those directions, every part is important. Get yourself organized with all the files and make sure you know what each one is for.

Lastly, good luck, and let us know if you have any more problems.

ok, working on that right now. once that's completed, which is the best guide for getting root considering I will have 2.3.4 and slcd?

This is the only way to root your phone and unlock the boot loader.

Like I said above its very important you follow the directions exactly in step 2 to replace the recovery with the latest slcd compatible version. Do NOT plug the phone in until AFTER you have unrevoked running and have chosen the alternate recovery... Then you can plug the phone in.

I am successfully back on 2.3.4, thanks for the help!

I am working through the suggested guide for rooting, and I followed all of the directions exactly up to

"-plug in your phone and place it in charge only mode. assuming you installed the drivers correctly, unrevoked 3.22 will start. let it do its thing. it will reboot a couple of times. when its finished,it may leave you on a blank screen. if this is the case, pull the battery and reboot."

unrevoked gave me the dialog box confirming I wanted to continue, and upon confirming gives the message "Failed to push Recovery. Terminating."

not much information to go off of. What might be the issue?

edit: false alarm: i had not uninstalled HTC sync
