OK I'm bored of waiting and orangehelpers on twitter have today confirmed no known update schedule for branded handsets... so I need to de-brand. Dont need unlock or root just the normal unmolested htc firmware.

I have always done orange updates so current version is Android 2.3.3 Sense 2.1, software 2.50.61.3;

I'm aware of lots or differing ways of doing things, lots of download options and something called goldcard. Would someone be so good as to offer simple instruction as to the best and reliable way to achieve my aim. I'm not a techy and am worried about breaking things so an easy step by step with links to current software versions to use would be truly helpful.
In anticipation, Ian

Thanks both for guidance, I've looked at the ace hack and yes that looks scary... Its a shame it needs to be rooted in order to debrand. If I allowed the one click ace hack, would it know to install orange unbranded and then update appropriately? To be honest with a working phone that I like it looks like the prudent thing may be to simply wait...

I'd agree with waiting....you aren't missing a major life experience by not having he update yet. Rooting seems to work well for those who really want to customise their phones and are into that sort of stuff but I see a lot of posts of the type 'ok ..I've rooted...now what do I do?'.

I rooted my phone prior to the hack kit... I think that it would put unbranded software on your phone (Orange is branded).

If you change your mind, head over to the All Things Root section - plenty of people to help you out!! :)

Goreygirl and DURX are right; rooting isn't for everyone, but we'll certainly be on hand to assist if that's the path you want to go down. There are some good points made here on the pros and cons: http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/400056-rooting-dhd-worth.html#post3106892. I'm certainly very much pro root, but that doesn't mean the DHD is a bad phone without rooting.

Anyway, to your original question, I'll need to do a little bit of digging, but I think (and I'm not even 50% positive on this) that you can debrand using a goldcard and an RUU. Let me have a look about though.

Interesting... that does sound like it could work... I'll look forward to reading what you have to say on this (may even have to go and have a look myself :D)

I have an UNBRANDED DHD from CPW on Orange, but still have not received the update. Is this down to Orange - I didn't think it was?
