Help Gyro sensor calibration

If it is indeed the norm, my next question is, what does this actually do???? :rolleyes:

I was reading a different thread and something mentioned about something else made me think of this and it kind of makes perfect sense now (the gyro staying in the middle, not this post). The gyro controls the switch to landscape to portrait and back again. So it has to stay in the centre to give a pivot point.
