Hey all. Quick question. Has anyone heard anything about the 4.0.3 update? As in when it's coming?
So much for quick updates on a Nexus device.
I blame Verizon.
I will try to briefly explain device update processes and why they take so long and the advantages the Nexus has.
A normal device Android update has the following waiting periods: 1. Wait for Google to release/push new version of Android. 2. Phone manufacturer(HTC, Samsung, Motorola, etc..) customizes this software to their liking and makes sure it is compatible with all of a given phone's features, also bug testing. 3. Carrier/Verizon does their own lengthy scrutinizing process to ensure it meets certain quality standards. If it fails, it goes back to step 2.
The international GSM Galaxy Nexus(and all previous Nexus devices) only has step 1. The Verizon Galaxy Nexus still has step 1 and step 3. It will be faster to get new versions of Android than anything else(save the GSM GN) still just because you're not spending months waiting on Samsung/Motorola/HTC to customize. I hope this clears things up.
As of writing this, Google is holding the update back, not Verizon. If Google had released the update for the Galaxy Nexus, the GSM international version would have it now.

Geez, the phone only has been out for about 3-4 weeks and you need an update already.
I say be happy with what you have, There is not any other phone getting ICS until it is happy with the Nexus.
And just think when the other phones finally get ICS, it will be BLOATED to the hilt.
^^^ Now you can thank me for the speech or go get a phone with Ginger Bread plus the bloat.
I dont understand why motorola or vz would allow other gingerbread phones to go to 4.0 because they rely so heavily on bloatware...
The GNex is unique in that it basically circumvented Verizons SOP: its more Samsung teaming up with Google, then sending the phone to Verizon and Verizon selling it outright.
Once 4.0 is "mature" enough to hit other phones, Verizon will become part of the process again, getting the phone after the manufacturer (Moto, HTC, etc) and Google, then testing, adding their specs, bloatware, etc.
I have never seen a statement from google or vzw that support this, or even the aforementioned "google is skipping right to 4.1" statement.
Sure I've seen random people in forums that I don't know trying to pass this off as fact. Care to point the community in the right direction here to support these statements?
TIA!
I dont remember mentioning anything about 4.1.
Wow. No need to jump down my throat guys (not all of you). It was just a simple question, not a complaint.
The reason I asked is because I'm rooted, but haven't been particularly impressed with any of the 4.0.3 ROMs. I'm actually very happy with stock 4.0.2.
I do, however, want to run a new kernel, mostly for UV and GPU OC. The problem is the selection of 4.0.2 kernels is extremely limited.
Hopefully Faux will work out the kinks in his 4.0.2 kernel and that'll do the trick until 4.0.3 comes out officially.
Those don't support the question I asked, not even close.
Again, where is the statement from Google about moving to 4.1 and scrapping 4.0.3?
That's different than a leak. Many times, even on samsung phones, VZW has regressed to an "older version number", but with "newer files". Anything is a go at this point.

BMX did post about this topic about a week ago.
He more or less said that the update will be released very soon. So if you need a answer, I would read what he is saying about ICS updates.
BMX does leak out good info.
