Root Wanting to get started.

So far I've backed up my contacts with google. Been doing research on here and XDA. I'm running 2.3.4 so I need to use petes one click. Trying to figure out what all I need to DL to make a nandroid (seems confusing.) I need RSDlite 5.3.1_5.1 right? I think im looking into this to hard/far and am making myself nervous about it keep thinking what if i break my phone. It all seems pretty straight forward except roms and flashing. Please help. My main goals are to freeze crappy bloatware and install some custom roms/themes.

Ok so far. I've downloaded or started downloading, Petesmotorolaroottools, RSDlite 5.3.1, MOTODX2_bootstrap, and VRZ_MB870_Gingerbread. With the .rar do i transfer those to my phone after its rooted?

To create a nandroid (complete system) backup, you root your phone, then put the Bootstrap apk onto your sdcard. Open it with a file manager and it will install the app System Recovery. Make sure your phone is plugged into the wall charger (no usb or car charger will work) and run System Recovery (now in your app drawer). Install, accept superuser permissions, and then tap Recovery Mode. It will take you into your custom recovery (navigate with volume buttons, select with power button). Look for backup and recovery, and there you'll find the nandroid backup functions.

As far as those files go, RSD is a computer tool you use to flash a factory stock SBF (VRZ_MB870_Gingerbread). You won't need these unless you need to go back to unrooted, right-out-of-the-box stock condition, and they stay on your computer not on your phone. Pete's is run from your computer also. The only thing that goes to your phone is the Bootstrap apk (unzip if it's in .rar format).

Also if you wish to start flashing/modding your phone, backup your apps to your sdcard with an app manager like Titanium Backup or AntTek App Manager. You'll also save the apps' data as well. If you want to save your texts and call logs and such, they can be saved using an app like MyBackup. App Extractor can pull texts and apps and such from a nandroid backup, but I've had variable success with it.
