Wifi "issue" blown out of proportion? Seems like it, how bout you?

jd, This is the problem some have with your posts. Did you not read the several posts just before yours? These people have done the bluetooth/WiFi tests, and find no noticeable dip in speed. If you don't like the Prime, just return the darn thing and get something you'll be happy with? I think most reasonable people would choose this course of action.

All I can reasonably compare it to is the OG iPad which I have now given to the wife, and my Epic 4G Touch. At the furthest point in my house I can get, my signal and speeds of the Prime equal or exceed that of the iPad, and while the speeds are consistent with the E4GT, my signal actually is stronger on the Prime. My Sammy never seems to have more than one bar of WiFi, but it doesn't seem to affect battery life or speeds.

I'm beginning to think that you work for ASUS:p:p:)

Other than the spotty GPS, I really haven't found any negatives to the Prime

Actually, it's not just turning Bluetooth on, it's actually using it. For example, I did a test with my Motorola Bluetooth headphones. Here's what happens consistently:

1. Wifi performs fine. Turn on Bluetooth, wifi still performs fine.

2. Turn on and connect Bluetooth headphones. Wifi still fine.

3. Start streaming music from Google Music. Wifi cuts in half or worse, then quickly cuts out completely. Internet-aware apps report lack of connection.

4. Stop streaming music, wifi eventually returns to normal.

There's definitely a problem of some sort with actually sending data over Bluetooth and wifi at the same time.

Interesting Jack.... This goes against the reports I read.

I have a 6 mbs line with U-verse. Perhaps people with higher speed WiFi see issues, and reading about some people's download speeds this may just be the difference between us, but at my speeds the Prime is on par with my other devices. If it wasn't, it would have been returned, since WiFi is of utmost importance with a WiFi only tablet. Captain Obvious there, I know. :)

RC512 model, so almost a year old now, as far as model, but better IMO than paying $1,200 for the a new model refresh :)

True enough. I'm quite happy with my Sammy laptop. It is aging like a fine wine. lol

Haha, you're too funny. :) Nope, don't work for Asus, and have no particular brand loyalty to them. I'm just giving my personal, honest assessment. I have posted on other threads that I don't like the placement of the speaker, nor do I like the fact that my microSD card sticks out just enough, that if not careful it will pop out. I've done it already by sitting my Prime down with the card touching the floor, not even thinking about it. Fortunately, I saw the card lying on top of my carpet.
I just happen to be very happy with my Prime overall. It isn't perfect, but my gripes for me, are mostly minor, and certainly not enough to return it. I just don't understand why someone would spend this kind of money on something and complain about it and keep it. If I was having all the issues jdbaker has, I'd be in possession of a Samsung tablet most likely, as the 8.9" was my alternate plan.

I had the same Wifi performance across all 3 primes. Tested against other wireless devices all three primes dropped off in signal and performance more as distance from the router was increased. For example iPad 2 and 3 Primes in same room as router and performance was close but definitely better on the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4s. iPad 2 18.xx Mbps and Primes 16.xx Mbps.

Move all to room down hall and performance drops but the ration of distance to performance drop was higher on the Primes. iPad 2 15.xx Mbps and Primes 9.xx Mbps. Increase distance more and it continued that way. I could not take the Primes as far away without dropping the connection.

For my use at home it is not an issue but on the road when staying at hotels that offer Wifi it might be the difference between getting a signal or not.

I haven't seen any particular issues. A good test for me is if it can see my neighbors' wifi networks. I live in a typical suburban neighborhood so that the neighbors' nodes are probably 100' away and through multiple insulated and brick walls. My Prime picked up the nearest neighbor today; my phone will also sometimes see across the street, which is at least double that distance, but the tablet seems to be doing well enough.

I also think that there are always going to be "calibration" issues where 4 bars on one device is the same as 3 bars on another.

Then, when you get your 3G Prime, you'll complain about how bad the data signal is with 3G. :p

Here is my wifi problem. The slow result is the Asus and the other is the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
The Asus was tested first and they were tested within seconds of each other because I didn't want to test both at the same time. Bluetooth on or off doesn't matter. The bluetooth was off for this test. This is typical of what I get out of my Prime. The same sever was used for the tests. The tablets were the same distance from the router (about 20 feet). I am on a 60Mbps cable modem.
I am going to see if the ICS update fixes anything. If it doesn't then I'll probably send it back to Amazon.

Who said I was a getting a 3G Prime ? Oh you mean the fact that I shared a link about news pertaining to Asus Tablets of 2012 in a forum about a tablet made by Asus ? Thats called assuming. You know what happens when you ASSume right ? Break it down and leave me out of it ;)

I noticed that when I was within 3 feet of my router the Prime's speed was the same at the Tab. When I started walking away then the speed slowly dropped off. I walked down a hallway about 20 feet that was still in sight of the router and the speed dropped back down to around 300kbps. I also tried my OG Transformer and it worked just like the Tab. I think it is a hardware issue not a software issue but I will still wait until ICS comes out before I send it back. I have until Feb 3.

I'd love to see someone else's results with Bluetooth on AND SOMETHING PLAYING to Bluetooth headphones. To repeat my earlier post, it's not just having Bluetooth turned on, but something actually playing over it.

I'd be surprised if nobody here has the problem where wifi drops with something actively playing over Bluetooth, because it's a known problem over at the XDA forums.

Ok I finally remembered the head unit in my car has bluetooth streaming so I connected to it. My room where the router is located is 40 feet away and one wall between.

Sitting in car with doors open.

1. Bluetooth disabled > 13xxx kbps on 4 tests.
2. Bluetooth enabled > Song Streaming > 400kbps and below on 4 tests.
3. Bluetooth enabled > No Streaming > 400kbps and below on 4 tests.
4. Bluetooth disabled > 13xxx kbps on 4 tests.

On 2 it took a few second for the issue to show up. I got one test that was normal and then it fell apart so I ran 4 tests after it started happening.

On 3 this is stopping the stream from 2 but leaving BT on.

I think its possible that this may only happen when certain devices are paired. I initially had no problem with two other devices paired, one a wireless mic/headset and the other an iPhone 4 bluetooth tether. However when I paired with my HU for audio streaming the impact on Wifi was drastic.

The test should really be looked at more closely when you start to go further 'away' from your wireless router/hub.
The reports I have read from those who have both the TF101 & TF201 clearly state as the distance increases between the wireless source and the TF101 & TF201 the TF201 looses the signal greater.

Agreed. I've been using the Prime for about two days now, and I'm definitely seeing WiFi issues as described above. If I'm in the same room as the router, I get a full signal. Move two rooms away in my mid-sized apartment, and the signal drops from Excellent to Fair.

Is it enough to make me return it? Not sure. I'm crossing my fingers that ICS helps, but my hopes aren't high.
