You should backup your device if you want to but its not required.the way you root if to lookk at the "ALL THINGS ROOT PREVAIL"part of the forums and goto one click root and read that. it is simple to do.just install the Samsung drivers then put your phone In debug mode and just run the root program.Odin is to put clockwork mod on your fone and to put your fone back to stock.Roms is basically am advanced version of your fone.you can do alot more.you alot of choices to choose from.you can find all you need to no in the Samsung root guide thread in all things root prevail part of the forums.they are telling you what root means and wat it does.it tells you wat Odin is.it shows you all the rom's you can choose from.anything else you need to no look in that thread

All you really need to do is download Odin and download the EJ06 or what ever the last number is and read the post on that to learn what to do. After that you will be rooted and you will have Clock Work Mod which is where you will be able to back up your phone on.
Do it on your prevail, you'll probally mess up your m1, I would keep the m1 in airplane mode and use it was a mp3 player... but 99 time of 100 you wont brick your phone as long as you don't use ROM manager. I suggest flashing CTMod, flashing is the process of using Clock Work Mod (CWM) to install a zip from your sdcard.

With the "one click" method, all you do is run the script...click on the ".bat" file and let your command prompt do it's thing...phone just has to be plugged in via usb first - oh and the driver comes with the "one click" package.

No backup required for rooting (unless you want to). backing up your sh** means the entire software aspect of the phone can be restored the way you had it...rom ui, apps, settings, everything.

Odin is used to "flash" certain mods onto the phone such as clockwork mod recovery (which is great to have). Everything you need to know is in the "Odin" thread in "all things root".

In my experience, the only way to actually "brick" your phone is to either try to flash with "Rom Manager" (DO NOT USE) or somehow destroying it's hardware.

Rooting allows you to do things like remove system files (bloatware) and underclock for battery life, and wireless tethering is a cool feature I use all the time.

ROMS are very easy to install...all you really need is Clockwork Mod recovery v.5 which comes with any "Odin" package. Clockwork is a recovery screen (volume up + power) with many more features such as backup, cache clear, and zip flashing. All you really do is find a rom (.zip file) and select install zip from sdcard and voilla! Shabby is the only different one I know of and all it is is a batch script exactly the same as "one click" root.

If I missed anything please ask again and myself or another eager member will gladly answer.
