Why do RAZR sales suck?

I love the RAZR, I own it and the Nexus, but why does no one care about it at all? There is virtually no developer support, no forum interest, and i've heard anecdotally that sales are abysmal (Granted this was only for the regional director in washington state, but still). So what's the deal?

Input from local reps is sales have been very good. A pretty good indicator of sales is accessory demand and there are now tons of those for the Razr. Not to mention the Razr seems to be everywhere I look, when people are on their phones. Not so for others, except the iPhone and BB.

Though I am happy with the Razr just with root, the rommers will probably not bother unless an unlocked loader. Most rommers probably have the Nexus and Rezound.

BTW, your topic seems presumptuous saying Razr sales suck ;)

cnet and other tech sites have posted that moto's profits are down due to poor sales. i think the bionic debacle hurt them (and rightfully so). plus, the razr lacks a removable battery which many don't like. it's a better phone than the bionic though.

you also have to remember, that moto release the razrmaxx in china at the same time they released the razr here in the US, which is a far better phone. this is a pretty dumb move for an american company, wouldn't you say?

early reports indicate the unadvertised GN is outselling it by far. samsung didn't sell a cheaper model here in the US. it's the same phone the world round, except for the gsm radio.

my bionic problems put a bad taste in my mouth for moto phones.

Early reports from who? My daughter is a manager at a corp Verizon store and she says Razr's are outselling the Nexus by 3-1 at her store. My son also happens to be the Mid Atlantic region sales director and he says the Razr is the best seller as of right now in his region.

Motorola profits aren't down they are up. Motorola had a LOSS in the third quarter and thus far has said they made a small PROFIT in the fourth quarter. That's an improvement that was surely helped by the Razr. Motorola also said they sold over 10 million mobile devices in the fourth quarter with more than half being smart phones. I would say the Razr had a large part in that more than 5 million number. Any way you slice it the Razr is selling just fine.

well, i already cited my sources, but here we go again: tech sites with reports from moto and samsung.

also, one store you visit, and the word of an employee therein, doesn't old any weight on overall sales.

did i really need to say all this?:eek:

Okay, due to the conjecture out the wazoo and the arching into Gnex love, that was one serious fanboy drive-by from Bubba. They are funny though, so keep em' comin" :)

No, you quoted cnet and other tech sites. Last time I checked "other tech sites" don't qualify as sources. I quoted REAL living sources that would know.

Whether Motorola missed fourth quarter expectations or not doesn't really tell us how many of any type of devices were sold. And since you want to try to throw in Samsung sales figure how about you show us some sales figures on the Galaxy Nexus. The vast bulk of those sales figures are because of the SGS2 and not the Galaxy Nexus.

Kepp it cool folks.

Bubba - You did not provide any sources stating Nexus sales are in any way better than Razr.

Frag provided some real info and I am not surprised at his comments.

As for sales - I bet Razr will outsell GNex for one reason - it is a fashion phone. Like it or not, GNex is a geek phone. There are many, many, many more people buying phones for the looks than for being able to ROM.

although i agree that the razr is a fashion phone and the GN more of a geek thing, the razr has never been out of stock as long at as many resellers as the GN. not to mention the half dozen verizon stores i've been to have probs keeping them in stock.

the links i provided allow you to draw your own conclusions. take from them what you will. :)

Being out of stock means nothing. If Motorola provide 100 phones to a store and Samsung 30 and GNex is out of stock, what does it mean? Nothing. I do knot know how many phones they provide, but your conclusion is not a valid one.

From your links we can only conclude that Samsung sold more phones than Moto, nothing to do with Razr or GNex sales.

actually, the linked news stories i posted specifically mentioned the GN helped boost samsung's overall sales to record profits.

however, like i said, draw your own conclusions. :D

I have both for right now. I asked my 12 yo daughter did she like the Nexus. She said she liked the curves....lol. I will ask her in the morning which she likes more as far as looks.

With that said.... I dont think there is any concrete info about specific G Nex or RAZR sales. IF RAZR sales are low....could also be most folks that wanted a new phone or a Moto phone got the Bionic.....which came out a few weeks before. With the Rezound and G Nex coming out right after.....more choices. The G Nex being the latest n greatest, that helps. Then again that didnt help Fascinate sales compared to the Droid X1.

Point is....too many things to consider, too many good choices at the same time to really say why it is or isnt selling.

As far as developer support... to me its a no brainer. A Nexus phone vs an encrypted bootloader. ICS vs. GB. There is forum interest....just none really from devs. Forum interest almost matches the Rezounds at this site. For it having very lil dev support right now....I think thats very good.

Samsung profits in the 4th quarter are up primarily due to the galaxy s2. The gnexus arrived very late at verzion and I suspect that verzion sales of tghe gnexus were not material for 4th quarter. The GSM version was out earlier and I have no clue how the GSM version of the gnexus competed with the GSm verzion of razr.
-
Moto makes MANY phones (as does samsung). The atrix and bionic did not do well at all. I have no clue how the photon did; but the epic touch (galaxy s2) did much better.
-
I have no clue how the razr has done world wide; though at verizon the number of reviews for the razr (verizon web site) is much greater than for the gnexus and rezound combined.
-
This whole thread seems focused on the verizon versions where the gnexus had a rocky start.
-
The one thing to keep in mind from amazon and cnet USER reviews is that the rezound seems to have a highest level of satisfaction (though htc profits are way down).
-
Anyways as I noted above I have no clue how the GSM version of gnexus or razr performed but I'm fairly confident that the razr did much better than the gnexus at verizon. However what we need is the world wide figures.

however, like i said, draw your own conclusions. :D

If I may add to this; you can't get the Razr over here in the UK very easily.

In my town specifically; the O2, Vodafone, 3, T-mobile, Phones-4-u, Orange and carphone warehouse all did not stock the razr and said they had no intent of ordering any due to the lack of interest.

I oddly found mine at Tesco of all places; the only one that had it in stock; and only about eight of them as of two weeks a go.

Perhaps bad circulation outside of the US if anyone cares about non-US figures?

I personally love mine just fyi; seems odd though that none of the big-brand shops really seemed to care about the Razr.

It was widely available on-line. I bought mine from Clove and got it the first day of its release. Not many people shop for phones in stores nowadays. I cannot remember the last one I bought in a store - probably 6-7 years ago was the last time I did that. I have had 7-8 phones since then.

Keep it cool folks

Rule numero uno here at AF: attack issues, not people.

Any member is free to post in any section, regardless of device ownership. It's okay to disagree politely with another's opinion. Name-calling and baiting however is not polite disagreement and will not be tolerated. This should not come as news to anyone here so let's not see any more of it, please.

I think you'd be shocked. A lot of people still go to the stores for electronic devices as they like to test them etc.

And if you can't test the device anywhere; then people are likely to overlook it in favour of models that they can directly compare. So I think not having it stocked for at least display/testing must have hurt it a bit.

This is just my thinking... Oh and I feel old now as I still buy my phones from the best deal; Tesco had a better deal than I could find online... xD

I haven't looked into the deepest crevices of the phone offerings outside of the major carriers' offerings, but IMHO the Razr is currently the best phone available. Also, it is at least tied for the most expensive phone.

Just like you see far more Accords, BMW 3-series, and Ford Focuses than you do Ferraris and Lambos. More people are satisfied with less expensive, less kool phones.

I know that the RAZR is an amazing device, but it seems counter-intuitive that such an amazing device would also have a tiny following on Android forums, very little press, reportedly poor sales, and no dev interest. Does the Android community see the Nexus as significantly better?

Yes they do. Until Motorola unlocks their boot loaders you are not going to see as much interest on an enthusiast forum like this one. This is really the first time people have had a chance to hit Motorola by voting with their wallets and they have done just that. Just remember that the people that frequent this forum or in a very small majority of smartphone buyers. If ( and that's a BIG if ) Motorola actually follows thru on their promise to unlock their bootloaders you will see much higher interest in the Razr.

To unsubscribe from this thread is easy
at the very top where you see link back and thread tools, click thread tools and unsubscribe from this thread.

IMO razr sales are not "sucking" the phone was launched before the nexus, and the locked bootloader will prevent most devs from producing high end roms, but its not impossible, most DX owners know this. it just takes time.

i do believe the razr will see a good set of dev support once some devs get their hands on the device.

its a shame for the razr though being released in the same month as the nexus. however i do think that razr owners will see some custom roms soon enough.
