Future phones for Virgin Mobile USA?

Regarding the CyanogenMod 7.2 BACKside IHO, I guess I could try that, I really hate that we have to do that though. Why can't VM drop an OTA update to 2.3? I am not terrified of doing that, just aggravated that I have to jump through a few hoops to get the performance upgrade I am looking for.
Word is they tried, but when the locked down the LG updater they also broke the OTA updater.

How much can the Optimus v be overclocked? If I could get it to match the slider (more or less) I think that might hold me over until something better comes out.

The max you can get from the OpV CPU is 864MHz. However, that doesn't mean your particular phone will be stable there. Every OpV is different in that regard. Some can handle going that high, and some cannot. I've gotten mine that high before, but I really have no desire to keep it there since I don't play games or watch vids with my phone.

Ok what is the best (most stable) rom I should get for the lg optimus v?

I'm bias, but in my humble opinion that would be Jerry's CyanogenMod 7.2 BACKside IHO rom. Jerry is amazing with the updates and adding additional tweaks here and there for us. And on top of that, he is active in his rom thread and keeps up with our silly questions. We also have a talented group of people who make themes for BACKside as well. Just an amazing community all the way around. ;)

VM is about low price, and typically its customers prefer cheap phones with cheap plans. They wanted to branch out and test out having expensive phones like the Motorola Triumph, but unfortunately because of the bad quality control of that particular phone, their sales numbers are probably below expectations. And if just going by the numbers, some bean counter probably used it to argue that VM customers aren't interested in buying "premium" phones to use on their plans. But I think there's quite a few of us willing to pay $250-300 for a mid-level smartphone, as long it performs the way it's advertised. Optimus Black would be a perfect choice, I hope VM announces it soon.

+1 for the Optimus Black. That is the ONLY phone that would pry the Triumph out of my hands.
I know the Triumph is supposed to have issues but with Cyanogenmod 7 running on it I am loving it! I agree that the Optimus V is a VERY solid phone. In fact, I feel it to be more stable than the Triumph. I was just tired of always having to delete my "least favorite apps" to be able to install an HD game which wouldn't play very well on it anyway. Angry Birds even lagged on it. Low memory was a PERSONAL issue for me and really the ONLY issue for me. The constant low memory warning was driving me insane. So for me, I had to choose between a solid phone with low memory capacity or a faster, high capacity phone that can have its issues corrected with a custom rom. I chose the latter. I will admit, it was hard to let my Optimus V go...

I would consider the Optimus Black to be the PERFECT phone.. a device with the solid hardware and stable software of the Optimus V and the specs to match up with the Triumph. I am hoping that the rumors are true because I would buy it in a heartbeat. Too bad VM is releasing phones that are actually slower, smaller, and inferior to the Triumph's specs.

Yup, the Black would be the only VM phone that could force me to retire my OpV. Would be nice if VM would offer it, but for now if we want it we'd have to go to Sprint (LG Marquee) to get it.

I look at the bestbuy site daily to see what new phones might be available on the Virgin Mobile plan. I noticed today that the Triumph is only available to buy online now. So if BB won't be selling them in the store now, could it be that a new phone might be coming their way soon ? Just a thought !

Good call. Looks promising to me. Best Buy doesn't have unlimited inventory space. They have to get rid of old inventory to make room for the new.

I just checked and it looks like the Motorola T is out of stock at Wal Mart and it is discounted at around 229 on Amazon. I checked maybe two weeks ago and Wal Mart had them on sale for around 220 I think. So Maybe retailers are clearing out inventory! I really don't understand why they have such a messy line-up of phones. The HTC competes with the Optimus V, the LG slider competes with the intercept. And the Motorola Triumph has 2.2 not 2.3. They should really streamline the lineup, drop the intercept, upgrade the Motorola or replace it with similar specs. They do need at least one nice phone with a 4 inch-ish screen and a decent CPU. If they dropped a nice 4 inch ICS phone I would upgrade in an instant!

Actually I don't understand why they will not borrow some phones from the Boost Mobile line. A ZTE warp is a pretty nice phone. As long as it can be rooted.

Samsung galaxy II is available in Canada. Just saw a video on youtube !! Kind of a goofy ass kid but here it is ... rumor has it that maybe this February in America.

Virgin Mobile Canada is not the same company, and is not affiliated in any way to Virgin Mobile USA. Sprint owns VMU and Bell Mobility owns VMC, so their phone lineups are going to be completely different. :)

Please provide clickable links for any official news or rumors that you read about regarding any new phones for VMU.

No Name makes a good point In some markets VM is gsm, and they have contracts. We cannot base VMUSA on anything that is happening in VM in any other country. The only possible overlap is with Sprint or Boost mobile in the US I would think.

And the FCC filings, didn't someone show that FCC had approved a device for VM that sounded a lot like the Optimus Black?

NoName And Gigg thanks for that info. I was not aware of that. Have only been with VM a few months now. I have no links to that "rumor" about the Galaxy. In that little youtube video I was reading some of the posts and there was one from someone that "claimed" she had spoken to someone at VM and it caught my eye. She claimed that she was told that the Galaxy was coming to USA in February .. I copied and pasted below

Yuppers. I called and talked to one of the customer service people. They said in february and will most likely be priced around the same as the motorola triumph currently is priced ($300)

Aye, take it with a griain of salt. VM customer service is a company hired by Sprint/VM to handle customers with issues with their accounts or phones (and that CSR company isn't even based in the USA). Generally speaking, VM CSR's aren't privy to information like that unless something was leaked to them, or unless the information is already made public knowledge by VM themselves.

It's quite possible that the information was leaked, and that it might be true. Until we know for sure though...

True, VM Customer Service is a subcontracted company. They handle dozens of other companies as well. They know nothing.

Another thought occurred to me, The Optimus V was officially released the first week of Feb in 2011 (I dont know exactly). I managed to get mine at Target on Jan 27th though ( I had to ask the saleperson to prowl around in the back for it, they were not putting it on the shelf yet). So if anyone has friends working for Target, Radio Shack or Best Buy, maybe they could keep a look out. It seems some Targets were getting the phones in like 2 weeks before it was official, or announced by Virgin Mobile.

Someone was kind enough to post the Target item numbers for the Optimus V prior to the official release. Hopefully someone with some inside info can get some similar info for any new phone a few weeks prior to it becoming official.

I seriously doubt we'd get the GS2. Brand new off contract its like $600. No way they'd sell it for $300. Even if they did eat some of the cost and sell it for maybe $400, you really wouldn't be saving any money, especially if you upgraded after less than 2 years.

And why did they release the lesser Slider and Wildfire? To give consumers more choices and because the V is pretty outdated by now. The Triumph isn't as outdated yet, and because it probably didn't meet their projections, they're probably hesitant to release another $250+ device.

Innovation in phones is what drives me to the different cell providers out there... I am already missing the fact that I could not upgrade to an Evo shift when I was at Sprint..since the cost of the contract is kind of prohibitive... However, I am watching other non-contract providers closelly, and feel VM is being left behind somehow... hmm I intend to keep my phone for another year and a half at least, but if i don't see a phone competing with the best of the best out there, I might be forced to jump ship :(

It does suck, because the 35 a month plan is really a perfect fit for some people (I am still at the 25.00 a month price). But the selection of phones is a bit on the weak side.

The problem with the Triumph was really all the bad reviews and comments it got. It got hammered pretty good when it came out. I do not know how much of that was earned, but that plus no 2.3 makes it a no go for me. I think the 300.00 price tag is a bit high, but not unreasonable for nice spec phone. Samsung offers a 199 dollar phone off contract at Wal-Mart that seems to be at least in the neighborhood spec wise with the Triumph. I think most VM users are so pleased with the price of the plans, it's very frustrating that we cannot at least share some the phones that are available on boost. I would be pleased as pie with a ZTE warp on my current vm plan.

I have a question. I've had my Optimus V about 4 months now. So I am relatively new to no contract phones and Android as well. I think Gigg mentioned the fact that the OV was released in February of last year.
So to those of you veterans out there that first bought the OV, do you reacall any issues that were problematic with that particular model when it first showed up on the shelves ? Or did it run right out of the box.
Being new to Android I thought I made a really solid decision not only with the no contract aspect of it but the Android system as well. So I thought this phone was the bomb !! Now that I have been rooted and have the IHO build on the V I can't imagine anything faster or smoother.
If the Optimus Black that you folks are talking about is anywhere near the phone that my current one is, I would buy it sight unseen just knowing the screen was a little bigger !!

I bought the V at launch and had 0 problems with it.

FWIW, I also bought the Triumph at launch, and though it was by no means perfect, I really felt the bad reviews are unwarranted. It was great on stock, and I absolutely love it running CM7. Looking forward to the possibility of CM9.
