Verzion Nexus Car Dock

this is what i got in reply to if/when there will be a verizon 3 pin car dock released when i asked on a verizon wireless forum...
I actually posted on that thread yesterday, and I'm a little skeptical about where that poster is getting their information.

Sorry if I don't put my full faith in a poster named tidbits from Hawaii with a puppy avatar, regardless of how many Verizon forum "points" they have.

The car dock wouldn't be manufactured by Verizon anyway, it would be manufactured by Samsung. Until I hear from Samsung that the Verizon GNex won't be getting it's own REAL car dock, I'll continue to have hope.

UPDATE: Can we not just bombard Verizon's facebook page until we get an answer? If they don't have an answer, maybe they could force one out of Samsung.

I looked at the VZ car dock today at the corporate store. I found it bulky and klunky and of course no charging. It requires a lot of force to insert the phone and it mucks with the buttons on insertion and removal. I would take a pass even if it had charge pins. My current plan is to make a coat hanger and vacuum tube dock and mount it with fender washers and magnets. It sounds kludgy but it will fit the spot I want the phone better than anything off the shelf. And I will not be putting any powerful magnets near the NFC chip. Vacuum tube over coat hanger actually makes for a pretty clean looking setup if you can do a half decent job with bending.

I did a little comparison in photoshop to see if the three pin connectors on the CDMA and GSM versions of the phones lined up. It appears that they do not.

Take this for what it's worth, but if this is accurate, then it means the Verizon Galaxy Nexus will not work in the European car dock, and what we should be doing is demanding a CDMA version from Samsung.

I've already made one using coat hangers but the vacuum tube addition is brilliant! Thanks! FYI, attach mine by inserting the wires from my holding into my CD deck opening - I never use it anyway now that my music is on my phone.

The question here is why do cell phone companies hate CDMA?!? That GSM version is slick looking!!! I love the lighter grey (silver?) with the darker gray between...

It's clear that Verizon was more interested in promoting the Droid Razr than they were the Galaxy Nexus, but the position of the three-pin connector was obviously Samsung's call. Whether it was intentional, to keep the accessories to these two devices from being cross-compatable, or if it was an unintended, but necessary byproduct of redesigning the device with an LTE antenna, there's no reason why they shouldn't offer a full-featured car dock.

What we need is to make more noise about this. Enough complaining got Big Red to back down on their $2 payment fee, surely we could at least get a straight answer from Samsung on whether or not we'll see a real Galaxy Nexus car dock.

I'm guessing that Samsung projects the GSM version to far outsell the CDMA version, worldwide, thus the reason our CDMA Nexus is getting the red-headed stepchild treatment. And Sammy probably offered VZW a CDMA 3-pin car dock, but VZW likely balked at the slim profit margin, and told them.."Naw dawg, we'll just sell this shitty hunk o' plastic and tell our customers to shut up and buy it."

Honestly a car dock at ALL is better than no car dock. Im coming from a Dinc 2 which I never bought a car dock for (Im not sure) and I regret it after getting the Razr. Man oh man has that thing been a life saver. I like that its easily installed via the MicroUSB connector, but just having it not lay in my lap or trying to prop it up is the biggest plus for me.

Just a few questions regarding this dock:

1)I know it does not use the 3 pin connector, but does it have a way to easily plug it into the dock and then have it start charging? The Razr one simply had a MicroUSB connector for the cig lighter but then another one that just slid into the phone itself so it was easy to take in and out of the dock without fiddling with the usb and hurting the port.

2)Is the only way to buy the dock through Verizon for the insane 40 bucks? Or is there an aftermarket dealer where I can get it cheaper?

maybe if we all wish at the same time...

I'm just as disappointed as the next guy that there currently is not a charging dock for the lte nexus, but the whining and conspiracy theories are a little much.

Unfortunately redesigning the phone for an lte/cdma version made the GSM docks incompatible. We could still get a charging dock and we may not, but it's nothing to be worked up over. The Dock Verizon sells is actually very nice, and for an oem piece not outrageously priced.

I'm sure the Chinese ebay docks will be here soon as well.

The great thing about living in a capitalist free society, Verizon can set the price. If they want more profit margin, charge more for it. Just give the consumer the choice of which one to buy, stop trying to make the choice for us.

True, but Verizon would have to place an unknown minimum order quantity for Samsung to even produce it. It's quite possible that Vz's bean counters did their homework and determined that, based on the amount of car dock sales for other phones, they wouldn't be able to sell the min qty required of the 3-pin dock for the Nexus. So if the demand isn't there historically, they're not going to go out on a limb to lose money. That's my 2 cents.

Isn't there someone here who "imported" a GSM version? Or someone close to Canada? Not that I don't trust the photoshop side-by-side, but I'd rather see an actual side-by-side.

So what the hell are the pogo pins even on the LTE GNex for?

Hopefully someone develops an app that will use these pins as a taser...then we can tase all those lucky GSM owners.

Seriously...good question. Maybe Samsung designed the phone assuming Vz would order the 3-pin good docks. When they didn't order them, it was probaby simpler to leave the pins in vs. a redesign. Then again they could have just as easily added a plastic plug instead of metal contacts if there was no intent to use them. Maybe there's some hope after all.

I like the taser idea, but perhaps as a security device. If face unlock doesn't recognize you, bzzzt.

I read the 3 pins are for charging and notifying the phone that it is plugged into the dock so it can start the Bluetooth on the phone. The phone then communicates via Bluetooth to the dock and sends audio to the audio jack on the dock (the real GSM style dock that is).

The link below is to a thread about an inductive charging hack that uses these pins. The only problem is nobody knows how to convince the phone is can fast charged with the 3 pin connector. If you connect +5V and Ground like the hack shows it will slow charge.
