Root Quick question on PRI and NV and Radio

I am running Synergy RC2 with the following versions.
Baseband 2.15.00.09.01
PRL 60683
PRI 1.77_003

Can I just make a nand backup then flash all the files that are listed as "Latest" over in this thread ? ([ Radios ][ 9-5 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers)

or the combo that's listed as EVO_Radio_2.15.00.08.08_WiMAX_27243_PRI_NV_2.15_00 3 - Includes latest Radio, WiMAX, PRI & NV ?


What will the update do for me? What's the risk?

Also, it mentions that if I flash teh combo file I might have to flash the kernel again. I am using the kernel that came with Synergy RC2 but if there's a better one that you can suggest I'd love to try it out.

Short answer, yes, you can just flash the latest combo on that page (which is what I did when they were posted).

Long answer:

Updating radios is one of the few ways you can brick your phone -- so make sure you have a full charge on your battery, and DO NOT pull your battery during the flashing process.

Yes, make sure you have a nandroid, with your WiMax keys!

As for "what will the update do" for you... for me and many others it improved my reception (data and phone). Some folks have said they have better luck with older ones, so you'll just have to check and see.

And for kernals, if you're on the stock kernel that came with your ROM, you shouldn't have to reflash. (If you'd LIKE to change kernels, there are several options for Sense Roms including Freedom, ChopSuey, etc. -- and you can read up about them in the Kernels for Dummies link).

I have an older sot of radios and an even older set of NV and PRI values. I get better battery life with the 1.77 NV and PRI.

Like JSD said be patient, follow the instructions posted in the thread you linked, and don't pull the battery. Easy peezy mac-n-cheezy.

I am not too concerned about battery life as I am using an extended battery and I have two spare OEM batteries with me all the time.

I do however have 4G connection issues here and there and when I use the menu's update phone functions it says it has updated but the version numbers don't change. Just like to know that I am somewhat more current with my software.

I read a bit about the kernels and I am leaning towards trying the Cop Suey 9.26 universal. Any concerns at all with that kernel ?

PS: I am trying to make my phone a bit snappier. Overall I am happy but sometimes I see some bothersome screen lags.

PSS: I can keep the phone plugged in as well to make sure I don't drop power ?

I would NOT leave the phone plugged in, I'm pretty sure I've read that that can cause problems. Just charge the battery up to full before starting, you should be fine.

For snappiness, I'd personallly actually recommend leaving Synergy behind and flashing MikG 3.0 instead. Mik's roms are amazing, and it's still actively supported (I don't think Synergy is).

In terms of kernels, every phone reacts differently to kernels, so you'll need to try and see what works with your particular device. Folks seem to like that Chop Suey in the past...
I've always had great results in terms of snappiness on the stock kernels included in MikG and the Evo Classic... (but most recently I've been using that pulled Anthrax kernel with MikG, and I'm impressed). Whichever you choose to try, make sure you give them a few days to "settle" before you make any judgments on how well they work.

In terms of reception, I'd lean towards thinking the newest radios/everything theoretically should help -- but also keep in mind that a very large number of Sprint customers (except in the most major markets, it seems) are having seriously poor reception and data speeds lately (supposedly because of their upgrading the network... I've personally been considering switching to Verizon because data speeds have gotten so bad here in NC).

But when I first flashed those radios, I did see a marked improvement.

2. Wipe Cache / Dalvik
3. Flash combo file in Recovery
4. reboot.
4a. Check to see if wimax keys are still there with this app.
4b. Go to settings --> system updates --> "update PRL" then "update profile"
5. wipe Cache / Dalvik then Flash kernel file in Recovery
Reboot
Test for a few days

All went well until here. It asked me to reboot to continue installation
After it rebooted is went into recovery, with the recovery menu on top, a circle with arrow down in the middle and on the bottom it says
Build: RA-supersonic-v2.3
Formatting Cache:...

the "reboot system now" is highlighted on top.
It's been like this for several minutes now and it doesn't appear to do anything.
Do I select the "Reboot System Now" ?

if it is the same one I had, that is what it did when it was done, popped up the recovery writing when it was done.

If nothing is happening/no more text is appearing below (and if the reboot is now highlighted in green and you can choose it), I would think the process is done and you should be fine to reboot.

I was just being careful since it didn't tell me anything on the bottom that it was completed with whatever it was doing.

Agreed, I know that after all the warnings I got on the dangers of flashing radios, I was just as extra-careful.
